Basic job

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
While the company really supports the normal colleagues, the second you step into management, they just don't care. There's next to no recognition or support, majority of store managers do not care about you and only about how they look to the regional manager at the expense of you. It's incredibly stressful, you're expected to work 12 hour days with no overtime paid, and you do not get paid your worth as a manager. Say goodbye to a work/home life balance as the shifts are all over the place and you don't get any time to yourself.

Pros

Many opportunities to progress

Cons

No work/home life, rubbish pay, stressful

Fair

Sainsbury’s is a great company to work for, so long as you give it your all and work to your best ability and attitude. There are a long list of benefits including opportunities for discounted vouchers and days out in so many different places.Chances to earn extra bonus gift cards to spend where you’d like and fair treatment amongst staff.Although we would all like to be paid more, it’s fair to say the colleague wage is fair for what the job entails.Holiday entitlement is good and there is a great opportunity, work ethic and ability considered, in the bigger stores to move between departments and find something you like. The majority of managers are fair and the current store manager is one of the hardest working, always willing to get stuck in while still getting great results.I started as a temp and am still there 6 years later but now Full time.I would also say that although every day isn’t exactly ‘fun’ I do always laugh at work and feel supported.Penzance Store

Online assistant

Pay is very good (£9.50/hr) but work life balance was bad, if you want a life outside of work don’t apply. Management was okay but they don’t really care about anything. There is no job security (3 months contracts every 3 months)

Pros

Pay

Cons

Long hours, early hours

Bad place to work

The delivery staff on the ground are ok but when it comes to Management, they are a different kettle of fish altogether. Unapproachable and when I raised issues they were just swept under the carpet. They also have their favourite drivers who are consistently given the early morning shifts, leaving the night shifts and weekends being the only times I was given to work. The downside to working nights is it’s difficult to see house numbers in the dark, no-ones around to ask and when you return to the depot everyone’s gone home so you have to unload all the crates by yourself, whereas in the day there’s a whole team who can help. If you want to work on your own then maybe this could be a chance but if you want support then forget it.

Pros

Discount card

Cons

Long hours, working night shifts and weekends

Awful management, clear favouritism of staff

Terrible management who had clear favouritism within members of staff. Inconsistent, treated everyone differently, lack of support and sympathy. Slightly older members of staff would be treated differently to younger members of staff receiving better hours/overtime/benefits. Young staff never received love it voucher etc

Good but permanent full-time contracts are hard to come by.

Good pay for the skill level required, management are mostly good and considerate. The only issue is the tendency in local stores to hire lots of part time staff leaving those wanting full time work having to rely on overtime to live. The hours are also not ideal at local stores with some closing at midnight and opening at 6:30am meaning a car or walking distance is a must.

Pros

Good pay for the skill level.

Cons

Irregular hours and usually part-time contracts.

Its just retail

The work is monotonous but simple to learn and once you have your routine figured out you can easily get on with it. You do not need any prior experience. The colleagues make it bearable. Management is overworked but I personally have not had a bad experience with a manager. Usually a good amount of overtime is available, and the hourly pay is the same as normal hours. The 10% colleague discount almost sounds like something but really does not add up to much. They are reluctant to employ full time so that you are more likely to say yes to cover others' shifts.

Pros

good pay for an easy job

Cons

physical

Okay workplace

Job is okay, easy work really. But can be quite physical. Hours can be late due to opening hours and what department you are on.Worst past of the job is the management.. a management team within the store can change frequently and as a employee that’s not great when you make relationships with your managers. Management can also be bad aswell. InexperiencedPay rate is good, and so is holiday entitlement.

Pros

Holiday entitlement and pay

Cons

Long opening hours and bad management

Good place to work

Working here was fun, always something to do. Hours were quite flexible and was always overtime available if needed. Pay is great aswell. Only downside was management tend to have favourite people and talk crud about the people they don’t like. A-bit like being in a school playground

Pros

Easy work, Flexible with home life

Cons

Management talk about people like they’re still in a school playground.

If your face fits....supervisors do nothing.

Sainsburys actually pay a fair wage, and I enjoyed the job but other staff members spoil it. Unfortunately if you say/do the right things around managers you get away with anything. When managers not around they stand chatting or on their phones whilst the rest of us do all the work and they get all the praise, you can only ignore this for so long before it starts to make you feel very undervalued. I'm currently doing my third summer here whilst at Uni and sadly it will definetly be my last because it has become worse year on year.I work on checkouts and it is lovely getting to know regular shoppers and I will miss that but seeing the so called "supervisors" do nothing is so frustrating, they literally get paid for doing not a lot yet they get awards for their hard work! Really wish managers would do random checks or even check camera to see what really goes on, and why are there sometimes 4 supervisors on at the same???..that is a recipe for them to do Nothing!.I've got to know some of the permanent staff during my time, and some are so good at their job but get no recognition and an awful lot of them are not happy any more.Luckily this has only ever been a summer money earner but feel sad for staff that have this all the time...Managers please start to see who really keeps things going, even customers comment about it.

Pros

Decent equal pay at all age level, good for students.

Cons

Favourites get away with doing bare minimum and reap rewards

Do not work at sainsburys

ALL managers think they are Gods gift and speak to ANY member of staff with an attitude. No support from management, always getting aggressive messages about speed (IPH) on handsets and never get praise for a job well done!

Pros

Pay is correct

Cons

Management, communication, workplace is not welcoming.
