Minimum wage and no career progression
Selling Partner (Current Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 27 November 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedFlexible working and some good benefits but minimum wage even after completing training and gaining experience. Very difficult to progress your career within the company. You just have to stay where they need you.

Don't waste your time
Selling Partner (Former Employee) - Cardiff, Cardiff - 27 November 2023
Fairly boring throughout the year and then three months of high stress and little support. No work/life balance and no flexibility. Management are bullies.

Nice management
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Cambridge, Cambridgeshire - 25 November 2023
A mix between boredom and high stress, on certain days of the week you might spend a day replacing price tags on a weekend you might not have time to go to the bathroom for 12 hours.

Good business with lots of opportunities but some difficulties
Talent Acquisition Coordinator (Current Employee) - Bracknell, Berkshire - 22 November 2023
I enjoy my role with JLP and the flexibility available is unrivalled. (Remote working, one day a week in the office with managers very helpful with adjusting shifts.etc) The main difficulties and gripes come around progression. There's always lots to learn which is great but pay is fairly stagnant and you can not get rewarded for taking on additional responsibilities. You pretty much have to keep moving into new roles to see benefit financially. Talent Acquisition also takes on temporary staff and it is disheartening to see partners from branch taking a remote secondment with significantly higher salaries from those who are permanent. Work to be done, but you can do a lot worse.

Very good and supportive.
Operations Assistant (Current Employee) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire - 22 November 2023
A fun workplace to be. Nice food. They treat staff well. Previously I did work experience and that was a good experience for me too. They're very welcoming.

Boring
Selling Partner (Former Employee) - Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear - 16 November 2023
Tedious work, no-one cares that you're uninspired and demotivated. Old fashioned methods of management, existing partners seem to think they are not entitled to enjoy their work.

Love the company & culture
Girlswear Designer - Mat cover (Former Employee) - Victoria, London, Greater London - 16 November 2023
John Lewis is a fabulous place to work. I was part of a lovely & creative clothing design team. I was set up quickly with all the equipment needed. I have never felt so creative and inspired. Managers are intuitive, supportive and relaxed. The team are fun and talented. The work-life balance is great. It did take me a bit of time to get used to the ways of working but that is because I was working on a different product area to what I had much previous experience in. They have very efficient ways of working in place. Would 100% recommend John Lewis as a place to work!!

Relaxed environment
Warehouse Operative (Current Employee) - Coulsdon, Greater London - 15 November 2023
Work is pretty straightforward and easy to pick up. Short shifts of 6 hours and you get paid 33% night premium which works out to over £15 an hour. Repetitive but nice management and relaxed environment

Good place to work
Selling Assistant (Current Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 15 November 2023
Supportive manager, good pay, not that flexible though. Work can get a little tedious, but for a weekend job, it is great, especially if you're at school and need a bit of extra money.

Happy workplace
Operations Assistant (Current Employee) - Norwich, Norfolk - 14 November 2023
Generally a happy workplace that look after staff well. They offer good flexibility. There is a good variety of work being such a large store. Sometimes could do with more staff to complete the task and less managers.

Great workplace
Commercial Manager (Current Employee) - Victoria, Greater London - 12 November 2023
Being a co-owner makes a real difference to people’s attitudes at JLP - everyone tries their best to make a difference as we all share profits in the form of a bonus at the end of the year

Rubbish job
Stock Assistant (Current Employee) - Nottingham - 7 November 2023
Avoid Working for John Lewis and Partners if you can. Long shifts, rubbish pay, no flexibility in shift times or hours. Kind numbing tasks managers don't care.

Great place to work, some bad managers
Selling Assistant (Former Employee) - Kingston upon Thames - 5 November 2023
Selling Assistant..fast paced, most times very busy. Most Colleagues are friendly. Poor management in some of the departments. They would leave two new people to serve 20 + customers in a cluttered zone, that was potentially unsafe, customers were getting angry and the situation was constantly left open for theft.. they don’t want to hear how your getting on or know about the problems you see happening within their own store. Apart from this Enjoyed my job, talking to and assisting customers with their purchases. It was rewarding when customers thanked you for your help.
Pros
Free lunch during busy season, friendly colleagues
Cons
poor management

Good for a first job
Cafe Worker (Former Employee) - Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh - 5 November 2023
I was a Christmas temp at the cafe. There were lots of different tasks to do you were assigned one task for the full day eg. Coffees, dishwashing etc . For a first job it was great the managers however can be stressful to work with but luckily you see them like once the full day. People are lovely I would have stayed on if not for other opportunities . I wouldn’t work at the back with operations as those workers aren’t great
Pros
Free lunch/ lovely staff
Cons
Customers are snobby and posh and rude

Friendly workplace
Specialist (Current Employee) - Dartford, Kent - 5 November 2023
Staff are very welcoming and keep you going. Managers are okay, some are very supportive and friendly, others can be a bit blunt. Overall, my experience at JL has been amazing. Made progress and some great friends for life.

Very stressful job, everyday is different but not in a good way, some customers are way too demanding and we are treated like garbage
Warehouse Operative/Multi-Skilled/Installer/Driver (Current Employee) - London - 5 November 2023
Very stressful conditions, work with new people all the time who clearly aren’t trained nor are they interested, management don’t care and are just looking out for themselves, we are just numbers to them, working conditions are poor, driving to places where there is hardly any parking, customers expectations are too high, we aren’t payed enough for all the tasks we have to do.

Poor Management
Catering Assistant (Former Employee) - Trafford Centre, Greater Manchester - 3 November 2023
Lovely coworkers however the management completely sucks the life out of the job. No training yet expect you to know what to do, can't be bothered scheduling enough people and instead leave you to do several jobs, managers sit around doing nothing while staff run around trying to get everything done, closing shifts never leave even close to on time, managers have no idea what they're talking about and are seemingly exempt from rules everyone else has to follow. Overall just a miserable experience, would not recommend at all.
