Food and Beverage Assistant in Bewdley
Honestly pretty bad
I was miserable working at my particular hotel, management didnt care, and everyone knew wit so work ethic was terrible.. I try to get excited at every new job opportunity but this really suckee the life out of me. Took weeks to get me set up with any kind of clock in so I had to manually record my hours and I examined that I needed hours to pay my bills, was told that was fine and then given very little for weeks on end. The staff were friendly but they all complained about how much they didn't like their job and would question me as to why I was doing cleaning when I had finished my other tasks.. I had to complain about no lighting in the small and frankly grubby toilet for 3 weeks before anything was actively done about it and the place was filthy. Every staff member would just say " its not my job" and the manager didn't enforce any kind of cleaning roles or responsibilities

Dont work here
My time working at this hotel has been one to remember, for all the bad reasons. The only thing positive I can take from this job is some people I worked with were nice.
Here are just some examples of my time working at this horrendous place.
Firstly, there’s no real interview process, I got told over the phone to go in with my passport and bank details for a chat. The talk lasted 5 minutes and the manager gave me the job straight away, he took my birth certificate and my bank details and scanned them and that was it.
I found this odd because I was used to employers getting back in touch with me if I got the job, and even having a trial shift before getting the job.
The hotel itself is located in the middle of nowhere, it looks outdated and it smells like old furniture.
I said to the manager I could start on the Saturday, but he was calling me up everyday before Saturday asking if I could start earlier even though I told him I was away until Saturday. So that was the first point I realised he doesn’t listen.
Once I started on Saturday, the manager wasn’t working, the duty manager on shift didn’t know where to put me and it was a mess and unplanned. I was then introduced to somebody on the bar who trained me up, he was a nice guy.
The cleanliness of the bar was disgusting, the dishwasher never gets cleaned, neither does the glass shelves and it was all sticky! When I voiced this to the manager he told me that the bar has been neglected and the bar team have done nothing to clean it, I was surprised he knew and was so calm about it and did not really care.
The manager also doesn’t listen when I wanted time off and I told him I pre booked these dates off before I started at mercure hotels and he said it was ok. Yet, he still put me on to work, when I questioned him he said “can’t you ask this person to cover your shift?” Even though it was his mistake, so it should be his job to rectify it.
I also noticed OUT OF DATE snacks and soft drinks in the cellar and on the bar!! Some have been out of date for over a year, and they’re selling these to customers! The cellar is a mess, they have a sheet where you write down what stock you have taken but this sheet always disappears. The staff room is disgusting, it has dirty plates and cups all over. There’s no HR department either which is dodgy.
I was advised by a former employee to leave the hotel because I was better than this place, and that if they offer me the supervisor position to not accept it because it’ll be the worst decision of my life.
The long hours are exhausting, they say in the “interview” you’ll be doing 4-11 or day shifts, but they put you on 12:00-close mostly ALONE and you hardly get any day shifts. You’re paid 1p over the minimum pay and it’s not worth being overworked. The job position is bar team member but they shove you in on doing restaurant service with hardly any training and then they get frustrated when you ask questions!
Now to talk about the people who work there and the regulars, there are a lot of two faced people that work here, a few of them starting rumours that I fancied somebody who worked there, even though I’m engaged! It’s very much like high school drama.
Some of the kitchen staff are extremely rude, they talk to you like you’re a piece of s***. No one helps you out of the bar when you’re alone and it’s busy, but they get in your way on the bar to make themselves drinks. Some members of management let their positions go to their head by doing the bare minimum and barking orders at you whilst you’re already busy.
There’s one regular who goes there every night and he is the most rude and arrogant person I have ever had the displeasure of meeting. He would not call me by my name, but instead click his fingers at me and shout miss when he wanted my attention. Even if he was getting served by someone else and my attention was elsewhere, he would still rudely get my attention. He wouldn’t click at anyone else other than me which I found odd. There was one incident where he rudely got my attention and was talking down to me over an incident that happened a couple of nights ago (when I wasn’t on shift) and he seemed to get annoyed when I was asking more about what happened so I could help the situation. When I was saying “no problem” as a figure of speech after he said thank you, he would snap at me again and say “but it is a problem” this caused quite a stir and some customers commented on his behaviour and how disgusting he was to talk to me like that, one customer even threatened to punch him.
When relating what happened to the other members of the team, they just shrugged it off and said that’s how he is. No compassion, no authority to step up and have a word with him, they only care about the money he gives them and not about their staff!
I was miserable the last two weeks working here, I began looking for jobs and luckily got myself one. I handed in my notice immediately.
The manager tried to persuade me to stay and tried to push the question as to why I was leaving, I felt pressured and intimidated because he did it on more than one occasion and I wasn’t obliged in any way to give him an explanation other than to read what was on my notice.
Other members of staff tried to guilt trip me into staying, even slagging off a new team member on the bar saying she wasn’t good at her job! Although it states on their job application you don’t need bar experience, if you don’t have it, you get frowned upon by some of the staff.
I got myself so worked up in the last week of me being there that I actually got sick and couldn’t do my last two shifts due to throwing up. When I informed my manager, his response was anything but considerate. He said: “does this mean you can’t come into work?” And “do you feel like it’s serious enough to have time off?” It sounded like he had no health and safety training which is shocking for a manager!!
Avoid working at this place at all COSTS. These are just some of the bad things they did when I worked there for just short of 2 months.
My overall experience has put me off EVER working in a hotel again.

I enjoy working at the Mercure Leeds Parkway Hotel - I have a great team in the Sales office and we are all supportive of each other. Our manager is great, always supportive but pushes us to be the best we can. Each day is different as I get to interact with lots of different people. I would definitely recommend working here!
