Fast paced and stressful.

Busy, but can be very rewarding. There is flexible working options but most likely will not be granted, unless childcare or medical reasons. There is no flexibility on how to work. A lot of my work is admin based, yet I am not allowed to work from home even for 1 day.

Pros

Flexible working

Cons

Long hours, stressful, negative environment

Ok place to work

An ok place to work, some very good clinicians. International reputation within the clinical field. Not much chance or progression if your face does not fit

Pros

Cons

Some colleagues

Cliquey, people qualified with poor knowledge base and skill set. Unprofessional management and team leaders.

Cliquey, there are qualified people with poor knowledge base and skill set. Unprofessional management and team leaders. Alot of covering up of situations that should be reported in addition to being ignored when raising complaints. Senior staff consistently burdening others with an overload of tasks/ jobs that are not in their job description. Dismissive and inappropriate behaviour. Staff are not treated fairly. The concern for the Health care status of staff members is absent.

Pros

there may be departments that do up hold correct standards policies & procedures, convenient area for transport & eating facilities, Opportunity for one to experience different aspects of health care

Great place.

KCH is a great place to work as everyone is friendly and ready to help with any questions or queries you may have. To progress you will need to apply for another role as that is the best route.

Band 5 Staff

Never a day that is the same as the last, with a crazy busy ED and massive out patients clinic, and almost 1000 inpatient beds, radiology was kept running at full speed all the time.

Poor management of staff by Senior Management

Management top heavy with limited long term planning Sadly senior management does not engage well with the staff nor does it encourage or empower the staff to take pride in working for the organisation

A great opportunity to learn about the Health Service.

A typical day would involve firstly reading emails and prioritising problems that need to be solved urgently or deadlines for Finance information to be met. I learned to liaise with and assist staff at all levels in the Trust, from the domestic operatives to the Directors and Consultants, so it greatly improved my people skill. The workplace culture is on the whole good, with much diversity of people and skills, in a very pressurised Health Service Environment. The hardest part of the job was juggling priorities, and managing staff. The best part was meeting some incredible people of all types of occupation - health professionals/HR/Finance etc all doing their best to juggle those priorities and assist in any way to make easier the experience for the patients of the possible, and to take the admin pressure from those health professionals treating patients.

Pros

Good training schemes, regular pay reviews

Cons

Long hours

A routine job with possible advancement

Day to day - processing patients for doctors, assisting doctors with procedures Learned - Ophthalmic medicine and whats involved, plus a little bit about the eye in general. Teaching is extremely limited and you must seek it out as an individual if you wish to learn Management - Sufficient. Often chaotic in high pressure situations. Workplace culture - A small amount. The job is too busy to really develop this. Hardest part of job - the sheer quantity of patients coming through, and the lack of leadership in the department. Most enjoyable part - experience in operating theaters. *Job advertised as £18,000 - £21,000 PA, this was false. I started on £16,000 and have increased to £17,000 after considerable effort.

Cons

long hours

Challenging and dynamic

King's is a wonderful hospital full of character. It experiences the challenges of most NHS hospitals in London but offers a great base for supportive development.
