Nice people terrible pay.
Business Support Officer (Current Employee) - Lancaster - 20 May 2022
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedThere are some good people in this organization including my immediate managers. However the levels of bureaucracy and ridiculous rules makes it a frustrating place to work in, plus the pay isn't nearly enough for what you actually do.

Poor Management
Business Support Officer (Former Employee) - Preston, Lancashire - 28 March 2023
Looking back, I thought I had a good job and was receiving appropriate support, but now I realise just how toxic things were. A typical day at work - Sitting in front of your computer 9 - 5, Monday to Friday, doing the same tasks. Manager constantly on your back, when you're trying to do your job and hit your targets. What you learned - Even though changes were being made, they weren't to benefit employees. Made me realise that working for LCC has changed tremendously over the years, and there's really no room for progression. Management also only cared about numbers and hitting targets. Management - Definitely a fear of culture. On one hand they expect you to get on with your job, but on the other hand, you're being micromanaged, and get told off for using your own initiative. Not allowed to ask for a pay rise, or give any negative feedback without management getting angry and condescending. Constant nitpicking and being blamed. Workplace culture - I generally got on with my colleagues, but due to toxic management, there was a lot of blaming going on. There was also a bit of a clique, which was more noticable in service meetings. The hardest part of the job - Constantly walking on eggshells, being micromanaged, trying to meet unrealistic targets. the most enjoyable part of the job - The colleagues I got on with, where we were able to vent out our frustrations to each other, as we were all in the same boat.
Pros
Annual leave, pension, sick leave
Cons
Toxic management

Fairly flexible for families
Business Support Officer (Current Employee) - Preston City Centre, Lancashire - 15 November 2022
Lancashire County council can be fairly flexible with families, it’s the best job I ever had and everyone becomes like a family in your team. Can be stressful at times but this job challenges you and taught me that I’m capable of much more than I knew was possible. They listen to members of the team a majority of the time and take on advice and ideas. This job gave me confidence.
Pros
Hybrid working
Cons
Parking an issue and public transport unreliable

Insights into Lancashire County Council
What people like

- Clear sense of purpose
Great if you don’t plan to progress
Business Support Officer (Current Employee) - BSO - 26 February 2022
The role I hold within the organisation is very uninspiring and monotonous. However, this may not be the worst thing if you just want a job where you clock in at 9 and leave at 5 and have no interest in advancement. Your evenings and weekends are 100% your own. The culture is welcoming and, on the whole, inclusive. Job security is definitely a pro, however, this can also be taken advantage of in terms of employees slacking due to a relaxed attitude and no fear of being sacked. Though I do appreciate this could be said about much of the public sector.

Job secruity but not great pay
Business Support Officer (Current Employee) - Blackburn, Lancashire - 2 December 2021
Working for LCC is a safe option, you get job security if you do your job well. The job is fast paced which is good but for what you do the pay isn't great. Higher management are not great, more staff are needed for the amount of work but they are slow to recruit and would rather just make the existing staff work to the bone. Colleagues are lovely and supportive and supervisors are mostly supportive, but they are also under pressure too.
Pros
Supportive and job security
Cons
Low pay and high workload

Not enjoyable
Business Support Officer (Former Employee) - Fleetwood - 26 February 2019
Good company shame about management and staff. Some of the staff rude and not at all friendly or welcoming. The job its self is fine just a shame management and staff let it down.

Not brilliant - but may have been where I worked
Business Support Officer (Former Employee) - Preston - 2 August 2017
In the beginning it was good, but the pay wasn't brilliant, employee benefits weren't brilliant either. My last manager was a qualified primary school teacher which often showed. The head of service was incompetent, and later wasn't successful when interviewing for her job and the grade below!! Too many restructures and relocation. But it may have just been the department I worked in.

Good Employer
Business Support Officer (Former Employee) - Preston - 12 July 2017
Flexible working hours. Good variety of jobs and experiences. Difficult times at the moment due to funding issues - many reviews to team and directorates over the last few years. However still remains a good employer with the possibility of advancement.

Overall fantastic place to work
Apprentice Business Support Officer (Former Employee) - Preston - 3 January 2016
Overall great place to work, good pension scheme, many benefits such as staff discounts at a number of locations. I thoroughly enjoyed my time as an apprentice and my manager was fantastic. The only downside at the moment is that due to the budget cuts there is no job security or progression opportunities.
