The most useful review selected by IndeedWhat is the best part of working at the company? Colleagues and getting paid each month. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? Too much work with an "expectation " to work in your own time, no PPA time at all. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Bullying by higher management and some colleagues, especially if you don't want yo socialise What is a typical day like for you at the company? 6 hrs teacher, 2 hours left for marking and assessment, paperwork(loads per learner), prep, email, dealing with learner issues.

Worst company I’ve ever worked for
Teacher (Current Employee) - Novus Gower - 4 May 2023
The company took us over so had no choice. They couldn’t care less about staff and just left us to ‘get on with it’ as if nothing changed, even though they decided we needed half the staff. Tried to express concerns at multiple stages even before the take over but that fell on deaf ears. Have worked for the prison service education for 8 years and saw it as a career, yet 3 months under this company has made me want to leave for any job. No support, no communication and an abysmal company overall.
Cons
No support, no communication, lack of empathy for staff, under staffing

Avoid this company. They’re not worth your time and effort
Tutor (Former Employee) - HMP Holme House - 16 April 2023
I have worked for this company for some time and can honestly say it’s unorganised chaos. The company doesn’t care about you, there’s no potential to progress unless you’re related to or friends of a manager already, managers just like ‘yes’ people, managers don’t know what they’re doing themselves and are seriously hopeless at teaching but yet will give you feedback on your teaching, you’re constantly under resourced, covering classes as managers will do anything to avoid teaching (even though they have contracted teaching hours to do!), not treated equally and poor cpd that is a tick box exercise. To be honest, the negatives are endless. The job itself is great when you’re working with your learners but the company is horrendous to work for.
Pros
No weekend work
Cons
Too many to list

Dinosaur company
Teacher of English (Current Employee) - Manchester - 17 March 2023
No diversity and inclusion , all the people at the top don't have a bloody clue. Too much emphasis on money and not the laerners. Don't look after good staff who have now left.
Pros
Mileage scheme
Cons
Lone working, no communication

Weak Management, toxic staff
Tutor (Former Employee) - HMP Wymott - 29 January 2023
I loved my job but as a young female (in comparison to most others working there) working in a male jail I was micromanaged when I didn’t need to be. I’m a fully qualified teacher with years of experience of working with marginalised individuals. When in the classroom, I couldn’t believe how lucky I was to have a job I loved, but the toxic nature of some of the staff was why I left. In hindsight, I should have reported some of the comments directly to HR, was pointless going to my manager as they were close friends with the person who made most of the comments. Weak management is an understatement as I felt my manager then fell in line with my colleagues views rather than challenging them.
Pros
Can be an amazing job
Cons
Toxic staff, not challenged by management

The role within the lte group is challenging but stimulating. Every day is different however it is what you make it. There is lots of opportunity for growth within the company.

Toxic CEO
Senior Leadership Team (Current Employee) - Manchester, Greater Manchester - 20 October 2022
The worse company you’ll ever work for this company needs serious change from the top down as it gets worse each day. The salary is poor and the progression is none existent. Bulling culture and toxic atmosphere. Do your research.
Pros
Makes you appreciate other companies.
Cons
No direction from the top down. Greedy Senior leaders.

If you want to develop mental health issues LTE group is the place for you
Student Support Worker (Current Employee) - Manchester, Greater Manchester - 30 June 2022
This place has affected my mental health in the most negative way possible, my confidence has been taken away and I feel I have gone backwards in my personal development. I dread going to work and worry in my time off. If you are not a suck up you will fail miserably. Any ideas you have will be claimed by management, you will be belittled and made to feel stupid. I am struggling to get out because of the issue I now have to my mental health.

Soul destroying
Tutor (Former Employee) - West Midlands - 8 May 2022
Working in prisons is great but working for Novus is soul-destroying, full bums on seat approach and they do not care about staff. No progression unless you suck up to management.

I have been with the company for 7 months and my first impressions have been exceptionally positive, excellent and professional on boarding, excellent senior management, I received all my equipment very efficiently. My colleagues have been so supportive and helpful. I think its the best move that I have ever made and I look forward to the exciting days and months ahead.
Pros
Great work life balance, Fantastic holidays
Cons
No cons that I can see!

Worst job I have ever had.
Teacher (Former Employee) - Cookham Wood - 9 April 2022
Staff are treated poorly at Cookham Wood YOI, regularly put into very serious and dangerous situations. You are locked into rooms and not allowed to leave, yes locked in classrooms often with dangerous individuals. You are made to feel like an inconvenience on a daily basis. People come and leave within a week as they can see how poorly you are treated. Staff rooms are a mess and a fire risk with how much clutter there is. Please do not work here, there are much better opportunities out there for you.
Pros
None
Cons
Everything about working here is a con.

Toxic Atmosphere poor management
Tutor (Former Employee) - Haverigg, Cumbria - 23 March 2022
Working for Novus at the Haverigg site has been my worst career move by far. The management are extremely poor and there is no support or back up. Not one member of staff enjoys working there. There had been a high turnover of staff during the reign of the current manager. 3 have left within the last couple of months! As a professional training officer the actual role is satisfying but the demands, lack of support and poor management team make it an unsustainable position. You are promised the earth at interview but very little materialises. There is more emphasis on quantity than quality in order to draw down funding and you are tasked with filling your own classes. I can’t speak for other establishments but my experience here has been very negative and I’m glad I’m out!
Pros
None
Cons
Poor management practices

very hard work and not appreciated
tutor and verifier (Former Employee) - Staffordshire - 26 September 2021
Old fashioned micro managed, you do not have a voice. big greedy company all that matters is ticking the boxes and making money, nothing to do with education. Managers are toxic and cause divide in staff. Some very focussed and dedicated teachers unfortunately bully tactics, conquer and divide management style has meant most of the experienced, excellent, staff have left. The only good thing about this company is the pay, after a few years and job security but it is a very difficult environment to work in, especially when the management want to dictate and control.
Pros
good pension, reasonable wage
Cons
constantly growing workload, shift of goal posts and expectations without being appreciated

Toxic, stressful and xenophobic culture.
Business Tutor (Former Employee) - Northenden - 13 April 2021
Poor institution. Education is not a priority - yet an ALPS grade is of utmost importance. Old staff stick together and overburden new recruits. As most new staff members do not last very long at all! Learners are indulged at the expense of teachers. Worst place to work. All benefits are below adequate and by no means make up for the workload and passive aggressive nature of management and colleagues. Avoid this place. Sad excuse of an establishment
Pros
None
Cons
Everything from staff, management to learners.

Overworked, underpaid and ignored by management
member of the team (Current Employee) - North East - 13 April 2021
The prison received this contract to provide education to their prisoners. The staff that work for Novus are a dedicated and highly caring bunch who work in an often stressful secure environment. They do this because they believe the men deserve the best education, training and employment opportunities. However, their expertise is wasted as Novus do not treat their staff with respect. You will be overworked, underpaid, micromanaged and your concerns will not be taken seriously. Be prepared to be expected to do the job of 2 or 3 people with very little support yet be constantly pestered to meet targets. Management seem to be out of touch and unaware, or unconcerned, at issues regarding procedures, targets or workload and are solely concerned with reporting their apparent efficiency to commissioners.
Pros
Caring and dedicated colleagues
Cons
Unachievable workload

Toxic environment
Student support (Former Employee) - Manchester - 13 September 2020
One of the most toxic work environments I have ever had the misfortune to be in. You go above and beyond your role on a daily basis to ensure the students get the basics of what they need to achieve and any rewards are given to management and not the staff actually doing the job. Colleagues and managers can be trusted to lie about you when pressured.
Pros
Teachers /Tutors and support workers really want to do their best
Cons
Toxic and bullying environment and insecure incompetent management

Waste of Taxpayers Money
Teacher (Current Employee) - Wolverhampton, West Midlands - 10 June 2020
What a shame that this company won the latest contract, such a lot of hard work and progress undone in a small amount of time.
The regional management are spineless and petty with backstabbing a major problem; all three of them have proven that they are not to be trusted. The prison governors are waiting patiently to find a way of removing this sham of a company so that the damage is limited.
The main instigator of this discord is the director of the WM contract who is a spiteful, cold and unforgiving shell of a woman who has instigated the removal of so many good people through personal vendettas.
One solid piece of advice, take a look away from this group and try another College if you really want to work in this environment.
Pros
None
Cons
Culture of mistrust

Poor Regional Managers
Teacher (Current Employee) - Wolverhampton, West Midlands - 23 May 2020
I spent five years working as a functional skills teacher with a different College and everything was fine, we all felt supported and could approach anyone in the local and regional management team; then Novus made a dubious bid for the contract and won.
Since getting their hands on the new delivery contract there has been a constant flow of good hardworking staff leaving because of the vile atmosphere created by a small group of incompetent regional managers. Avoid.
