Nice job but middle management not up to the job

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Lovely place to work but middle management very poor. General manager is very busy and needs a number 2 that is capable of dealing with problems that arise and not brushing issues under carpet. Role promised meal whilst on duty, never ever received one of those!

False promises, overworked and underpaid

This company promises staff benefits , the only you can use is the restaurant discount , spa never ever let you use the facilities , the so manager picks and chooses which staff can use it and it’s always her friends . Never allowed to use discounts in sister hotels , then told you have to be management to get this discount. Expected to work ridiculous hours like you’re a machine , no recognition . False promises of promotions and opportunities to move up within the company , just dangling a carrot in front of a donkey situation . Discrimination , racism and inappropriate behaviour is rife here , the kitchen is not a place for under 18s to be working in . The reception staff gossip about staffs private issues Housekeeping is just a bullying ring with the company encouraging bullying and unfair treatment . Generally a really really poor place to work and I would avoid it at all costs .

Pros

Free lunch

Cons

Long hours, underpaid, discrimination, racism, inappropriate behaviour, managers are bullies

Run by circus entertainers

So , I worked part of management at fowey hall , I had respect for my staff and helped them in every way possible. But unfortunately, the higher management won’t let you be nice to your employees “it would be wrong in their eyes”. The new management team who took over from mays opening are actually completely incapable, who think they know how to run a hotel , they made staff redundant who because they was not their friends had to leave ,they talk to criminal offenders and bring them on to the grounds ? . Place was nice , now look at it . What a shame

Pros

Lunch

Cons

Run by circus entertainers

Work

Was a great place to work at the beginning, however underpaid never gave any consideration on transport or travelling to and from work. Rotored to work 9-2 however was expected to stay till 5/6 on the daily.During the past lockdown, good managers was let go and ones that shouldn’t have been promoted where.HR department was amazing, would recommend working for the HR&Den department 100%.Unfortunately due to the recent lockdowns, and being on furlough i had to let go of the job, but be aware that your hours your rotated into will be expected to do more! If you provide your own transport to and from Fowey i would 100% go for the jobs, if you are relying on a bus then in the winter you’d have to be aware that the buses become less regular and are likely not to turn up- leaving your team to struggle throughout the day

Pros

Lovely Staff Benefits . No drama . Good Work Environment.

Cons

Not many.

A supportive and warm place to work

I have worked at Fowey Hall for many years now. The company have always been supportive of me as an individual, helped me progress and and encouraged our department to reach it's potential. We have a fantastic benefits hub, discounts for the high street, access to mental health and general wellbeing services and the support of higher management. I work with a fantastic, highly motivated team throughout the hotel who really enjoy coming to work each day. I would recommend joining the team at Fowey Hall to any potential candidates. Hospitality can be hard work but Fowey Hall brings a huge element of fun to day to day goings on.

Pros

Great support system in fellow team members

Cons

High seasons can be extremely busy

Generally poor to work for

Worked for Woolley around 2013/14 for a year on reception. Lovely looking place and friendly staff members. Very poorly managed, terrible pay for such long unsociable hours with no gratitude. Very much 1star.

Pros

Setting

Cons

Management

Undermining, unhelpful, selfish, uncaring

A very selfish environment with management entirely focussed on themselves (although the chef at the time was very kind and welcoming, I think he has now left) the training was laughable and the company do not care about any of the mere mortal me the do the hard work. Smoking seems to be the top of the agenda and if you don’t smoke it seems you are not part of the clique. Managers group together and look after themselves before ensuring the orders are handed out before the next cigarette break. Reducing staff to years over simple mistakes from lack of training and generally not caring about you as a human.

Pros

Stunning building, great history

Cons

Management, treatment of staff

It’s bad

I wouldn’t work there if I was you... long hours, no praise, no social distancing, no mask wearing, if you work in house keeping be prepared to be treated wrongly if you do your job properly , treated amazingly if you can’t make a bed, if you give us complaints. Managers do not care about anyone in the hotel only money. Do yourself a favour & don’t work there !!!

Pros

There is none

Cons

Bullying, favouritism..

Former employee, one of the best jobs ever

Although minimum wage and zero hours this is one of the best jobs I have ever had. Lots of perks, great team to work with, the manager does everything to fit in any special issues you may have like dropping and collecting children from school and leave for events etc. Moonfleet is a lovely location and such a special place, everyone in every department is warm and friendly and always has time to stop and see how you are.

Pros

Discounted stays in other hotels, use of hotel facilities

Cons

Busy during summer and not so much in winter.

lack of care for staff

Woolley does not treat it's staff well. The manager is too busy to give everything the attention it needs and could desperately do with a deputy. Many staff are treated like disposables. Many difficulties are brushed off, or blamed on someone/something else and not truly resolved. A lot is expected of staff, often without being asked directly and without recognition. Receptionists are truly undervalued and given far too much to do without proper staffing levels. I've seen many burn out. Staff are kept on a low as wage as legally possible and i've witnessed a staff member who wanted to moved departments 'volunteering' in the new department by up using the holiday accrued from the original department which must be illegal. There is no company sick pay. Lack of proper and decent procedures for staff returning to work from sickness and furlough, demonstrating a consistent lack of understanding and de-prioritising of staff wellbeing.

Pros

tips every 3 months. Beautiful grounds.

Cons

poor management, focused entirely on guest satisfaction at the expense of staff wellbeing

Productive

Small amounts of work to do with the amount of staff they have on shiftg and my personal experience with the staff and managers wasn't the best as they didn't understand treating their staff equally

Pros

free food

Cons

not being treated equally

my typical day

i woud arrive at work for 10am and make a coffee and start on the prep list that i have made either myself or the person that was on the previous night. i would work out what would take the longest to do and start with that. i would then work though the list until i complete it. we start a lunch service at 12pm and a evening service at 5pm. we finish a service at 10pm but with the nature of the hotel if we can feed all the guest and be done sooner, we can go as soon as we have cleaned down.

Pros

really friendly and fun place to work

Cons

because of my son the hours arent what i want anymore.

Don’t do it to yourself

You never get to use your 50% discount. The company make it difficult for you to book. The stress and anxiety from working for this company is terrible. Bullying is encouraged in housekeeping by the head housekeeper and her favourite person. You will be blamed for anything that goes wrong by management. Never take any responsibility

Pros

Struggling to find any

Cons

Stress and anxiety

Started good

I f you can ,steer well clear, you have managers ,that should,t be managers. certainly not worthy, the hotel manager well, portuguese , beware, all is not as it seems.. It wont be long until the knives are being thrusted in your back.. the residents pay top money for their stay , but the workers get minimum pay, poor hours,32 , housekeepers zero hours.. All the front of house, receptionists ,are the best there are, and under challenging conditions , always seem to get through , not appreciated for their work . they need a good shake up, if that ever happens ,sometime in the future , It may be somewhere ,where you actually enjoy going to work , and there may be sometime team working . The late shift are lazy and leave as much as they can ,for whoever they can , because they are busy , not .customers are left waiting for service, no ones attentive, too busy being lazy

Pros

depends on which shift, some shifts, dont get food, but job description say yes

Cons

not appreciated, no team work

Bullies

Please I dont want anyone to go through wst I have just been through. It's the most awful work environment from housekeepers that are allowed to bully and put you down you report them but head housekeeper is worse she encourages them then hr ignore your cries for help and the .manager let's it all happen ..then you the only one to get sacked

Pros

Some nice people

Cons

The rest

productive and fun work place

i enjoyed working at fowey hall. the staff are cheerful ,funny ,and at the same time hard working. Also i learnt many things about the restaurant trade. including three star dishes and how to make deserts from scratch

Pros

the staff were cheerfull

Cons

none

Don’t do it

They claim to be competitive salary wise and are not... Housekeeping is the only team who haven’t had a new uniform since opening! Communication is awful. Management won’t take responsibility for any failure. Staff moral at an all time low.

Excellent working environment, great team and wonderful new GM

The new General Manager is great, she is bringing more structure to the hotel, procedures in place and making it a lot smoother in day to day running. New things are happening all the time, a very exciting place to work.

great team, great work ethic

i worked there for a long time , as do a lot of the employees . this is because it is a great company to work for . as long as you put the hard work in you will reap so many benefits , fiancial , social and professional great place to learn your trade with great people helping you on along the way

Don't bother

If you're looking to work here.... Prepare to let go of your sanity. The standards are beyond poor, management is beyond failing and bullying is rife amongst the staff. And forget about trying to do anything about it because anyone below management level isn't seen at all. Be prepared to be used like a machine, without being given any credit. And prepare for heads of department to punish you for no reason at all. You will be used and abused in this place. Look somewhere else.
