Happy and Friendly Workplace
Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee) - Swindon, Wiltshire - 31 May 2023
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedStaff members were always really supportive if I was ever unsure of a task. A typical day as a customer service assistant would include making sure the shop floor had a high level of cleanliness, well stocked and keeping queues short where possible.
Pros
Free lunches, 20% off.
Cons
Poor management

Good pay
Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee) - Chorley, Lancashire - 27 May 2023
Good pay for work. Management have favourites and if you’re not one of them you will lose out on overtime and better contracted hours. Not the fairest place I have worked.

No training given on the tills, the other assistants had to train us on the shop floor.
Store assistant (Former Employee) - Sheffield - 19 May 2023
Initially I enjoyed my work at M&S, it soon turned sour when two members of management clashed. I was used as a pawn...by both. This is why I left.
Pros
Staff discount
Cons
Management.

Exactly what the summary describes, I really enjoyed the job, my colleagues too. However the management were disorganised and were not on your side ever.

Horrible management and sanctions
Customer Assistant (Former Employee) - Horsham - 20 April 2023
The management were not understanding in any way and when you were ill for one day you would be threatened with disciplinary actions which is unfair and unnecessary especially for the U18s who are the majority of the staff at many locations Too much pressure on the staff and not enough support from managers
Pros
Pay
Cons
Terrible management, no support, unjustified sanctions on illness

Fair employer
Till Operator (Former Employee) - Hammersmith and Fulham, Greater London - 17 April 2023
A bit dated when I was there. The pay was not reflective of the work you carried out. Progression to advancement but sometimes it's who you know. Great starting point for someone just getting into employement, such as student.

Awful enviroment
Operator (Former Employee) - Castle Donington, Leicestershire - 27 March 2023
Terrible management. Terrible shift patterns. Pay low, and hours long. Only agency work, as and when needed. Hard to get a toilet half of break is walking to your locker

Good
Customer Assistant (Current Employee) - Glasgow, Glasgow - 27 March 2023
Very good fast paced workplace, good support from managers most of the time but overall very good. I would recommend working at M&S, they also have good pay.

Customer Service Advisor (Former Employee) - Cambridge, Cambridgeshire - 20 March 2023
Friendly team and good pay for the job with opportunity for overtime if wanted. Management team took a real interest in the staff and held regular meetings to discuss the floor and give feedback.

suffocating environment
Customer Assistant (Former Employee) - Edinburgh, City of Edinburgh - 20 February 2023
managers have ridiculous expectations of floorworkers and often have to work unsociable hours with last minute rota changes. sick absence is treated like a witch hunt and getting holidays is a battle
Pros
discount
Cons
toxic management, out of touch people policies, poor work life balance

Section Manager (Former Employee) - Cornwall - 13 February 2023
Very fast paced and as a manager expected to get the job done before going home. Expected to work late shifts and weekends including Sundays even though contracted out. Development is great and encouraged.

Productive and fun workplace
Warehouse Operative (Former Employee) - Castle Donington - 28 December 2022
It's easy job but you should be fast for packing and picking. You have to pay attention about quality otherwise you will be in trouble. Attendance is very important.
Pros
Free drink
Cons
Long hours

Severely short staffed
Retail Assistant (Current Employee) - Leeds, West Yorkshire - 24 November 2022
There isn’t enough staff so you won’t ever get your holidays and sick days aren’t approved, never anyone to cover shifts and days off are never accepted or answered. Management is very unfair and have favoured members of staff who have a nicer experience than other staff who aren't friends with the managers. You very rarely get a reply when messaging managers about urgent enquiries such as shift changes or requested days off so they go unresolved and then get in trouble for not being able to make your shift you asked to change. The pay is good for young people and the 20 percent off discount is useful. The staff are all friendly and are all equally stressed over the management style and lack of communication.
Pros
Pay and 20% off
Cons
Random shifts, lack of communication and favouritism
