Lovely job, rewarding

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
A lovely, rewarding job which allows you to provide one-to-one holistic care. Looking for patient's house numbers at night is not always easy though! The manager is caring and understanding which is definitely a bonus!

What is the work environment and culture like at the company?Toxic. It’s not a great culture or an environment where you are encouraged. Very rewarding

A great place to work. Very rewarding. Change over of management makes the job stressful at times but plenty of support from colleagues. Pay has improved and staff now banded.

Low moral & under appreciated by management

The patients and the work is very rewarding and there is many good points about Mariecurie. unfortunately recent changes to the team have made staff moral desperately low, the management team don’t appear to be concerned - just feel like a number. Work/life balance isn’t appreciated. Travel time is unrealistic.Covering a large area for work Long shifts and no flexibility No career progression De-skilled and lack of training

Pros

Company car while on shift

Cons

Long hours & undervalued

Best company I've ever worked for

I worked for Marie Curie for over 2 years and the reason I left was because I relocated and they did not cover the area I relocated to, I was gutted. Working for Marie Curie made me love my job to another level. They paid well, the paid mileage well, they were flexible and going into a client's home I already knew alot about the client before I even met them because they supply a work phone with all the info needed and so I'm able to go in and seem professional and not like I don't know what I'm doing. I also like the security I get from contracted hours, holiday pay and pensions. I miss them so much.Any issues and I felt listened to and to be fair there were never really any issues. This was the Hertfordshire branch. My Manager and Lead Nurse at the time were absolutely amazing. They were understanding of my situation and was helpful in whatever way they could.

Pros

Pay well, mileage pay well, contracted hours, security, holiday pay

Cons

None

Issues from payroll

The job is very rewarding however constant payroll and IT problems made it a stressful place to work. After a night shift having to email manager of IT problems and calling IT sometimes not getting into bed for another hour but not getting paid for all this extra time you were having to put in to fix the IT problems.

Challenging

I am compassionate & I love working for Marie Curie. People/colleague’s are very supportive. We all work as a Marie Curie Family in the department. Not one day is ever a dull moment. It’s challenging & rewarding & each day is different.

Fellow colleagues

Wonderful ward experience staff support was excellent . Started my Specialist Palliative Care experience there in what was the old Huntershill building. Will always have fond memories from working there.

flexible

under paid for the role compared to the rest of the NHS and has no career progression or additional learning, Once you get the hang of the job its rather boring and you have nothing new to learn

Weak Management

Overall I felt that I was rewarded fairly for my work and I have the upmost respect for the charity and the work they do.Unfortunately the fundraising department I worked in was toxic. Particular managers using passive aggressive tactics, thinking it ok to belittle staff and pile their workload off on others. Higher management offering no support, admitting they don’t read their emails and allowing staff to suffer and ultimately leave.

Pros

Flexible working, work from home

Cons

Less support than you’d think

Rewarding meeting new people and communicating by listening and making conversation with clients I have never met before.

What is the best part of working at the company?Response when fundraising of how so many have benefitted through support from Marie curie nurses ❤️ .What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Being a volunteer and working mainly in major supermarkets we find fantastic support from the stores and no real stressful part in the fundraising. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? With the colleagues and team split shifts with a maximum of three hours per shift organised by regional manager.

Lots of training

I worked as a community HCA, you make yourself available for work but never guaranteed a shift. Also would have had last minute calls on days I'd said I was available. Lots of training provided. Most staff lovely to deal with but I found it a hard job as I don't like working nights

Great company to work for

Would recommend this place to anyone. I learned how to communicate the basic sales skills. The environment was quite rough but the best experience you can.

Ward team fantastic

Clinical team on the ward absolutely brilliant. Its a privilege to care for those on end of days.Team supports each other wellManagement is very poor and unsupportive of a fantastic team.No opportunity for promotion unless you train as a nurse.Hca's are the back bone of Marie Curie.Oay is very low for the job you do, dealing with death most days and the pay does not reflect what special job the hcas and nurses do.

Pros

Only pro is the team

Cons

Long hours, physically and mentally tough, poor pay

Lone working at times. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Lots of driving. Sometimes with a colleague and sometimes alone. Can be long shifts. Meet lots of different patients and their families.
