Marks & Spencer Employee Review

Not what it was.

Marks & Spencer used to be happy employees, happy customers. Now it's about profit & making staff work harder, longer & for less. Too many jobs to do at same time & no staff to serve customers. Most benefits have been stopped & if stores are closed (boxing day etc) you are now expected to work those hours back in that week, no work life balance over Christmas at all. Most premium pays have been stopped, Sunday's etc. Manager's are not accountable for specific sections anymore & so brings a very unorganised & messy place to work.

I've worked in retail for a few different companies and M&S seem pretty old school in terms of their structure and general management. Pretty average job at the end of the day

They look after you and offer extra training if you want to progress. If you work hard you will be rewarded. Stay positive and get your head down and you’ll go far

Could have been better

I worked for M&S for 13 years, and was never cared for my mental health. Being single and having no children I was always given the poor shifts and the last holiday picks.After a time I was left to just work on the tills with little to no support from other colleagues who felt that being there 33 years gave them some right to not do any of the jobs they should have sharing workloads. Management would let them run the show and wouldn't enforce any sort of rules with them. But yet if I hadn't done my job within minutes of being asked I would be hauled over the coals about it. I would never want to work for them again even if you paid me millions as they just don't support the staff with mental health issues unless you work in the head office.
