Retail Assistant (Part-Time) in Taunton

Nice place but felt wasn't given enough training
I really liked it here but feel I wasn't given enough training in the areas I needed extra help, so felt was unfair to get rid of me as everyone has different learning levels and people learn at different paces so feel if I was given more 1 to 1 training for a little bit longer after not working for that long it would have been fairer, the actual work and staff were nice, but I do feel that it is still short staffed despite taking new people on as I think certain areas need more people on when gets busy

Was okay...
I worked at Matalan for 4 years and I began really enthusiastic about my job, the training given was good enough for me to understand my role. I then progressed and took on more duties and more hours and began settling in well and became good friends with a lot of the staff; however I did find that the older staff had created a 'Click'.I took on even more roles to climb the career ladder and this went well - The company paid for training and hotel fees for me to visit a regional leading store. When I returned, I was however relied upon to assist with training but not given anything for this. I became a key holder and the pay was only 50p more than every one else - which was unfair as there was ALOT more responsibility. I went on maternity and had my hours cut severely - whilst pregnant they were happy for me to continue working 30 hours a week but upon return only offered me 4 hours... What is a person to do with that... They could only work around part of my availability but other staff they where fine with... worked around other members 2nd jobs but couldn't my child...

Good pay but bad manager
A typical day at work includes coming into work, having a 'brief' where the same poor person is stuck at tills, every shift (unfair as they rely on management to help them, in which they fail to do so.). Those of us on shop floor then get the delight to be spoken to in a very rude and condesending manner. We have had covering managers in the shop to help with workload which brings a relief as often we are all fed up with being constantly belittled. I have learnt that the pay is good because of the people you have to work with, that is all. CCTV is constantly watched and if you are found in a section you shouldn't be (i.e. helping a customer) you will be brought into the office and moaned at. Do not work here if you have any self-respect! I wish i could leave.
