Good for when you leave school to get experience in retail.

Indeed featured review

Hours were never too long.Management was friendly, and helpful.Staff was very friendly.Bad pay (minimum wage).Sometimes boring/repetitive shifts with not much to do, or the opposite and far too much work to do in a short space of time - not well balanced. No progression for younger workers. Overall a good place that will higher you with no experience, but definitely a stepping stone to get to better things.

Not the best

If you’re 16-17 i wouldn’t recommend working here, you do the same work as everyone else but get paid the bare minimum. i got put on a 4 hour contract which i thought would be good to manage alongside school 5 days a week but they kept giving me up to 12 hours a week and when i’d say i can’t do them it would be an issue. I’ve noticed them employ a lot of young people so they can make them do a lot of work and pay them almost nothing. i promise you it’s not worth working here

Ok

Great work colleges but pay rubbish and no chance at progression in company really. No incentives to work harder but still expect you to give your all and try give 8 hrs contracts so your not entitled to sick pay or anything

Good work life and make good friends.

I worked here for over 8 years. There wasn’t much room for progression but if you’re happy with a secure job where you can make great friends and have an easy life then definitely the job for you.

Bad pay and high expectations, wouldn’t recommend for under 18s

I was earning £4.81 an hour and didn’t find out until after i was hired. Shifts are typically 4 hours, meaning no break, but you get asked to do more depending on how busy the shop is. 16-17 year olds are on minimum wage for doing the exact same job that everyone else is getting more money for. The other employees are friendly which made the job itself tolerable for my short time there. They pay you minimum wage but expect maximum effort.

Pros

The coworkers

Cons

The pay

Minimum wage for a lot of work

Working long hours usually by yourself it gets very boring, you are getting underpaid for your hard work. Management doesn’t care about your well-being just as long as you give them a lot of hours. Stockroom is very messy and unorganised you will get stressed out working in there.

Pros

1 hour lunch break

Cons

Underpaid, long hours

The management is quite strict the store managers are always changed

I nearly worked there 12 months quite along time I was not on the tills which was a good thing.I mainly had my own department I did putbacks helping customers with their queries. There is always different store managers. The mangers are quite strict you have to listen to them more they dont give enough hours to some employees they mostly only give 4-12 hours a week thats why i left the job. There is not much opportuity to earn at Xmas and they are overstaffed and take mainly people.Other wise the job is ok.

Great workplace with friendly colleagues

Great place to work with a variety of tasks that are fairly easy. The colleagues are friendly and management is very good. Also there is a good amount of hours.

Pros

Good hours, variety of tasks

Cons

Minimum wage

Just ok

Working here was just ok management not the best can be stressful at times when busy but nice staff and supervisors hours weren't good and the pay is definitely not good but I suppose it would be ok if it was your first job

Pros

Co-workers

Cons

Pay, stressful

low pay, good management

it can be a hit or a miss depending who you work with and the work is not too difficult, but it is minimum wage as similar to any retail it can be stressful dealing with rude customers

Good place to work.

Matalan taught me a lot especially multi tasking. Great experience. Helpful management and friendly staff. I started on a four hours shift later on i was working around 7-8 hours.

Pros

Good hours

Cons

Nothing

Unnecessary added workload

Matalan try to run before they can walk . To many conference calls. Messy performance review processes. Always trying unnecessarily to change or add new things in. Lack of staff and managers but expecting the same results. Lack of personal and appreciation communication.Poor communication from line manager .Before covid felt valued . After covid just an employee number. Theft is getting out of hand.

Pros

Lots of different jobs to do. Stock is nice.

Cons

To many.

Hardwork

Very hardwork. High expectations on shoestring staff budget. Very rewarding if you put the work in. Hard to gain a good work life balance. Overall decent company to work for if you put in the hours and effort.

Nice place to work

I work there when the stores where starting out, I was happy in the job and managers and supervisors always on hand to help. the clocking in system was ok, but we had to clock in and out for breaks too. It was always busy and plenty to keep you busy. Lots of nice customer too, any issues you could contact the head office if needed. I did return after my maternity leave, but the job was not same being part time.

Pros

Nice staff discount

Cons

Shift hours

Good place

Good job for starters could do with higher pay and longer shifts instead of 4 hour but understandable to how the rota works but holiday pay could definitely be better

Pros

Good management

Cons

Bank holidays

Refuse to listen to requirements when I started and changed rotas with no notice

Minimum wage management refuse to listen Holiday requests not granted Not a lot of communication with the management or staff they change your rota without letting you know you’ll only find out when the new rota comes through Some staff are nice but over all not a nice place to work

Stressful

Understaffed, management was very rude and unhelpful. I was doing school at the same time and made to work until late at night, not much help given to me

Horrible place

You’re honestly just a number, the management is so unprofessional and they don’t do anything to help. On many occasions we didn’t receive the rota until late saturday night - when it starts on a sunday, so we didn’t know if we wouldn’t be working or not. We were also banned from getting a drink of water unless we had a break, meaning if you worked a 5/4 hour shift you weren’t allowed a drink of water. wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone

Never work here

Worked in the business for long term. Little to no pay at all. Very toxic place to work. Would avoid at all costs . It's very clicky in the management side of things and I saw alot of bullying thorough this too each store us the same as I had to work at many. The managers are always none stop which means they are always highly stressed out and don't get time to see how you are doing mentally or help in day to day things. It's such a bad environment to be In

Worst place ever.

I worked here for just over 4 years. This place is the worst. Any new people starting run whilst you can. I ran my mental & physical health down to the ground for this place. You’re just a number to them. Head office is just as useless as management. Rotas & hours are poor. Managers & supervisors are always changing as they step one foot into the place & leave as quick as they came. Overall a hotbox for gossip, bitchiness, favoritism & unfairness. As it was my first job I didn’t realise how much training they didn’t give me until I started my new one. Things I should have known about health & safety etc I’m only just learning about. The only bonuses for me were are how much holiday you get. Only reason I’ve rated it a 2 & not a 1 is because of the friends I’ve made at this place.
