Productive

Featured review

MBDA selected this as a representative review
Enjoyable place to work. Challenges keep you busy but they are worthwhile. I learned a lot and went on many optional courses to gain more knowledge on my chosen subject. Career path very clear.

Pros

Benefits are really good.

Cons

Salary could be better compared to the rest of the marketplace.

boring and bad management

1 Very bad planning ahead by the manager = Sitting around waiting or waisting time. 2 After being asked to submit ideas of improvements, you learn how to resist making any improvement suggestions as they take two years to implement the good ones. 3 Very bad planning ahead by the manager. Incompetent.4 Not included into the company culture if you are a scum contractor. You are excluded from the second half of any company meeting. 5 Not getting cold when sat around bored and doing nothing. The air conditioning units spew cold air on you. Being able to NOT complain about lack of or bad planning. 6 Half past twelve on Friday

Pros

one hour lunch was good for a nice lunch hour

Cons

There is no trust at this company

Amazing Company

I've been with MBDA for less than a year and they are an amazing company. They truly look after their employees providing free services in mental health, work-life balance etc. The job culture is really good, everyone is friendly and always keen to help others out when needed. The work-life balance is like nothing I've seen compared to other companies in my opinion - employees get to start whenever before half 9 and finish whenever they'd like to suit their needs i.e. childcare etc. Half day finishes every Friday. The benefits are good, shopping vouchers, cinema tickets, technology vouchers where you can buy latest tech and spread across 12 months interest free, Private health care, good pension schemes and many more benefits.Salary could be slightly higher compared to the rest of the industry but the work-life balance equals it out overall. Overall, amazing company, no issues.

Pros

Flexible Working Arrangements, Free Parking, Learning & Development, Career Path

Cons

None

Company looks after you, but engineering stuck in the 70s

The benefits and effort the company puts in its people is good for a defence company - they do go the extra mile. Generally people are very professional and accommodating, with limited politics (except with the French, who try to dominate). There are some interesting departments, mainly science based, which can be cutting edge. And there are some very clever people around, which makes it intellectually stimulating at times. But, other companies that operate in similar but competitive markets (MBDA in a monopoly, funded by the UK govmt) work so much smarter, and need to be efficient, focused and innovative. Whereas MBDA management were raised on 70s style Time & Materials contracts where failure was rewarded. Consequently the systematic nature of engineering is missing, meaning that you can be maxed out or sitting with nothing to do for months. And the level of re-work and nugatory work performed can mean limited job satisfaction, with projects progressing at a glacial pace. But it isn't ever chaos, as nobody appears to really care.It is just spending money (there isn't any effective programme management either)! It is noticeable that many of the good reviews on here are written by lifers who have not experienced other modern, dynamic, delivery-driven and 'smart' engineering companies.

Pros

Can be people oriented depending upon who you work for

Cons

Boring if you are experienced and have something to contribute

Great place to work

Technically at the leading edge of manufacturing. Fair and generous work culture. As good as it gets quite honestly. Great location with excellent car parking, canteen facilities and provision of PPE. Clean and organised.

Nice work, but stagnant advancement, and set in their ways management.

The work can be exciting at MBDA, that is if you can cope with the unobtainium plating and process that holds the company back. This results in them never being as fast or dynamic as their American competitors in the market. A Ford car and a Rolls Royce do the same job, but why do you need a Rolls Royce? Company advancement is non existent. I've not seen a promotion in 7 years and management are always using "Behaviours" as an excuse to hold you back even when you've done nothing wrong. The level plus system doesn't work for anyone but management to stop progression. Got bullied when previously working on project Asraam as well. A big culture of mushroom/seagull type micromanagement here. In short, your employees are like cats. Fail to look after them and they'll go and find themselves a new owner.

Hard Work

Very Political, there is a big ideology of working here where you are expected to advance up the management tree, so there is little co-operation in doing the work, just writing good reports

Dont go there

Well were do i start, nobody likes to help you, so when you get things wrong they dont like it, no propper training what training you get in training school is useless u dont need it. All little clicks never feel involved, if ur face dont fit u dont fit. Rather than help and give you better training they get rid of you. If any one dont like u and they go to management ur out the door. I

Not for Contractors

Contractors are treated like second class people even though everybody has the same goal. Very poor management. Don't like change. Lots of people retiring had been there since school and know no different in best practices etc

Awful

Was brilliant the first year, but second year they employed some right nasty people and ended up making the job an unpleasant place to work. Absolutely gutted how fast it went down hill, I know of 3 people that left after me due to the same problems.

Slow paced, political but secure work

MBDA specialise in hi-tech missile systems which should be an exciting area to get into. However the company is held back by a slow and ponderous old guard with a 'we've always done it this way' mentality. MBDA is trying to change to a more agile organisation however this will take years to achieve. An extremley political organisation meaning you have to keep in with the right circles to see your career advance - hard work and delivery won't count for much unless you canvas favour with certain individuals within the function - if you don't get on or challenge the current ways of doing things too much you will be out of favour. Company is doing alot to promote female and 'minorities', which can lead to other groups being 'unfavoured'. Opportunities to travel and paid overtime at certain grades are welcome as is an almost guaranteed annual bonus of about 5% and annual salary increase of c. 3% (Level 4+ and below). Level 5 and over have their own bonus and increase scheme. MBDA has alot of grads and ageing employees with a real effort to recruit those in the middle of their career due to a bottom and top heavy demographic... sadly, the company seems to be losing as many of these middle career types like myself as it employs. If you are a go-getter you will find you are doing the work of others whilst they sit back with no repercussions. This will lead to you taking on more work with stress and your work/life balance suffering. Recognition was eventually forthcoming, but by that point I'd had enough. This is the reason I left after only 2 years. Stevenage site -

Pros

Annual bonus, annual salary increase, on-site gym, secure job

Cons

Political organisation, long hours, stress

Relaxed, lack of progression opportunity

Great work-life balance, poor salary and progression opportunity, old-style management and rigid hierarchy which makes it difficult to implement change.

Extremely miss leading and diseptive towards the end

Although the working day was generally relaxed. I found that you can not trust the management. In some respects they are still working in the dark ages. They might pay well and train you well. But will soon get rid of you if they don't like you, you make one or two mistakes. Or don't live up to a certain standard with very little explanation consultation or reasoning behind there desicion making..... Don't be fooled by the big bucks.....
