I worked for Mears in a few different areas within the UK. The Domiciliary side appeared to be well organised, but the changes to rotas made it difficult to manage our time as travel times were not adequately added in. On-call at the time was very unsupportive, as a new support worker was often questioned why I was calling and how I got the number, I did not feel confident with the 'support'. I was often sent from one area to another with a 5 minute travel time which was unrealistic. After spending more on fuel than I was getting back on mileage decided to leave. Management did not me to leave and offered me a position in an ExtraCare living facility. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at that particular service, very person-centred and active environment.
Pros
flexible hours, good pay- additional on weekends
Cons
driving long distances with little travel time, short notice to changes to rotas

One of the standards of Mears is service users, but anytime you mentioned this to office staff, you were met with We have to run a business... they don't care about work morale and if you aren't in the clique they treat you like dirt. Over worked, you don't even get to spend the the full time with service users in the allocated time they have been charged for because you have to cut short the visit to get to the next visit, and if you aren't on time, a third party company calls the work phone asking where you are. They don't take in account of travel time between some service users, that can take over half an hour if you are in a rural location and they book visits from the hour to the half hour and the next visit on the half hour to the next hour even though you have to drive half an hour to the next house. You are always in trouble and always being passed about in shifts, shifts change sometimes with little to no warning. The serive users are majority the reason to stay in this job, they are so grateful, and thankful. Just a shame you can't spend the full amount of time with them, like they are charged for.
Pros
The service users
Cons
Long hours, unsociable life.

If you are desperate and need a job then consider Mears. Management care about no one apart from themselves, you will just be a number to them and they really are not fit for purpose

Management do not support their staff, only look out for them self’s and other management, very bad for covering things up and allow unsavoury characters to continue to work in vulnerable settings, with children and elderly, extremely concerning ! Interviews not carried out properly and health and safety breached constantly. Very cliquey in some settings it’s like being back at school. Very high turnover of staff/sickness and grievances raised, says it all.Horrible company to work for, my advice is stay clear !

This feedback is for care work in Brighton.Let's start from the beginning.. I didn't even started that time and already had to chase them about start day and training day. Three long days training and they don't even offer you a glass of water I am not talking about another refreshment like cup of tea or coffee. My first day already very stressed as they've gave me hours and places which wasn't in agreement on interview and job description. Very mean and spiteful colleagues included manager. Colleagues taking pictures behind your back and reporting to senior, senior laughing and collecting evidence then sit you like a child bringing the evidence and giving you disciplinary warnings for something totally irrelevant, manager doesn't letting you to help to your night staff colleagues if you want to help them to bring gloves from the office or necessary equipment for work, clients big bullies and management let it happen. This was one of the most stressful job experiences in my life. From the day I have joined Mears I had to join Unison to cover my back.. I have regretted I ever applied for Mears company.Sad, very sad .
Pros
Some of colleagues are nice
Cons
Bully and mean manager

I worked for Mears from 2002 to 2014 and they were evolving but still a great company to work for, I went back in 2019 after working client side for 4 years and the cultural change was phenomenal and debilitating I never thought I would say it as I loved working for Mears and missed it when I left but I could not wait to get away from the poisonous branch ethos. It wasn't what you knew but who ! And what you could offer them personally, and sadly when I reported some incidents (With proof) to the HR department I did not even receive a reply apart from the "We received your e-mail and we will..... So so sad
Pros
The guys on the ground are usually good
Cons
Poor management across the board and a massive gap from the top to the middle

Mears group have been absolutely fantastic with me, I work in the Ellon area and I couldn’t ask for a better team to work alongside, if your looking for a nice easy going job then working for Mears or in any care setting isn’t for you. As a walker in one day I clock up a lot of miles but it’s all worth it when I see the difference I make to my clients day. Mears are very flexible with hours, they try their best to work around what you can do.
Pros
Meeting lots of new people.
Cons
Don’t get paid for walking between clients but can claim if you drive.

Quite possibly the worst company I have ever had to work for. I was TUPE'd to them with no consultation period and no notice. They acted as though we were invaluable to the company until it was quickly realised they had no intention of keeping us and made it impossible to stay. We had a vast amount of knowledge of the contract and yet ignored on a daily basis. We attempted to show them better proven processes. They repeatedly lied not only to us but to the service users and landlords committing various breaches of their own sub-standard contract. Although being out of work is a scary prospect for most people, for the sake of my mental health it was essential for me to leave before they manufactured a reason to get rid. If you have any sort of choice, please think very carefully before working for this group. You will not be respected or treated well.

The company slogan is “making people smile”, last time I checked people didn’t smile after experiencing intimidation, bullying, harassment, victimisation and discrimination. Pay nearly always wrong, breaching employment rights, contracts and health and safety on a regular basis, very disorganised company with not even a grip on the AASC contract. Lots of staff have grievances in place and there is a divide between workers due to pay disputes and contractual rights, which has been instigated and driven by management. The contract manager based in Wakefield thrives on intimidation, bullying and discriminating staff which is often backed up by supervisors who are also intimidated into not speaking out against higher management. No work life balance and high sickness records by staff due to management and company conduct
Pros
Nothing
Cons
Pretty much everything

The training was 5 days unpaid, however seemed in depth and very thorough. They toothed their horn about how they get the most contracts ect and there is always work and a support line ect. I felt confident going in as a walker at this point. Then I had a week of shadowing. This was great for hands on experience however I saw the same service users time and time again. This meant I didn't get training on things like catheter care. I did raise this to management at the end of my shadowing and they said they'd sort it out. So at this point I was less confident, but was still determined to keep going. I was aware I'd need to self manage my time sometimes at the walks may take longer than expected. I was put on to work alone the next week. The first service user I had was also new to the company, just discharged out of hospital the night before. The care plan was a sheet of paper with a few bullet points on the care I was expected to give. Nothing about this users health or conditions I should be aware of. That was the first red light. Across the next few days I was given 10 min between calls to walk almost a mile to the other side of the town. Next I noticed I had to give drops to a user which I didn't have the qualification to administer. Management just told me to let the user guide my hand and me squeeze the bottle. Of course I refused this and coordinated with the carer I shadowed (who was qualified) to switch calls. I made it 3 days before I was too exhausted and fatigued to the extent I didn't feel safe to administer meds. I called in sick, management still asked if I could - more...

mears are without a doubt the worst company I have ever worked for. They were a complete nightmare from when I started to when they eventually let me go. The office supervisors and manager were nasty vindictive bullies who treated me like dirt and harassed me on the phone on a daily basis one day I had over 5 calls within an hour. A truly horrible experience!
