Animal Technician (Former Employee) - Cambridgeshire - 3 June 2022
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedGood company to work for. Pay could be higher, but there are other benefits. You will work in a small team and won’t be expected to do stuff unsupervised unless you are trained / signed off / confident in doing so.

No career or salary progression here
Research Assistant (Former Employee) - London, Greater London - 17 July 2020
People were lovely, but MRC LMS has a culture of underpaying staff and there are no opportunities for career progression. Managers are going to great lengths to keep salaries low. If you are applying for a job here, try your best to negotiate as higher salary as you can because one you start working, you're not getting any more than that.
Pros
Free facilities for research, nice people
Cons
Not a rewarding environment for work, no progression, low salaries, fast turnover of staff

Overall OK

MRC is a big orgnisation that has several institutes across the U.K. Overall, it is a nice research orgnisation. However, it may require some improvments in job culture and salary.

Provide technical buidling services managment to Science
Chief Engineer (Current Employee) - Cambridge, Cambridgeshire - 4 October 2017
Generally the MRC is a good organisation to work for.
My typical day is arranged by dealing with building faults, maintenance, and how to do things better.
The hardest part of the job is the paralysis experienced through working in the public sector
The most enjoyable thing has been the growth from engineer to, Chief Engineer
Pros
final salary pension, 30 days holiday/yr
Cons
Public sector

Hard to advance career
IT Systems Engineer (Current Employee) - Harwell - 17 March 2017
There is very minimal focus on staff development for technical staff.
In IT the team is very small and we don't have the time to implement a lot of corporate best practices.
The management is focused very much on the science and not on the smaller services teams. I often only see my manager for a couple of minutes each week.
Due of staff politics it can be hard to get additional responsibilities, and have a good personal development plan
Pros
30 days annual leave
Cons
Long hours and lack of staff development

Easygoing
Personal Assistant (Former Employee) - London, Greater London - 24 February 2017
The departments that I worked for were very easy going and friendly. I had a good working relationship with my bosses and enjoyed my job and the work that I was doing. I learnt quite a bit about different types of research. Was based in an open plan office which was good for staff morale as we were all together.
Pros
Very flexible
Cons
No advancement

Administration for Medical Research projects
Executive Officer (Former Employee) - London - 12 October 2016
I worked here 30 years ago and I can remember very little. I learned how to manage staff and run my office. There were no computers and every system was manual, so it is hard to comment. I did enjoy working there and met some interesting people. The MRC was run on the same lines as the Civil Service, so staff were well cared for.
Pros
holiday entitlement, pension, flexi-time
Cons
salary was low for London
