No career or salary progression here

People were lovely, but MRC LMS has a culture of underpaying staff and there are no opportunities for career progression. Managers are going to great lengths to keep salaries low. If you are applying for a job here, try your best to negotiate as higher salary as you can because one you start working, you're not getting any more than that.

Pros

Free facilities for research, nice people

Cons

Not a rewarding environment for work, no progression, low salaries, fast turnover of staff

Great people, varied work

Great development opportunities, fast paced but varied work to keep it interesting. Lots of team work working with each others strengths. Amazing benefits including flexible working and time off over Christmas. Opportunity to learn new skills and work with different people within the research council and internationally.

Overall OK

MRC is a big orgnisation that has several institutes across the U.K. Overall, it is a nice research orgnisation. However, it may require some improvments in job culture and salary.

Always want more but are not prepared to reward more.

What started as a great job with great and varied work has now become just a lot of work and an awful job with no reward or respect for the work that is done

Pros

Good team to work with

Cons

£650 pa parking, No pay advances for 10 years and No reward for innovation and going beyond your work sphere.

Provide technical buidling services managment to Science

Generally the MRC is a good organisation to work for. My typical day is arranged by dealing with building faults, maintenance, and how to do things better. The hardest part of the job is the paralysis experienced through working in the public sector The most enjoyable thing has been the growth from engineer to, Chief Engineer

Pros

final salary pension, 30 days holiday/yr

Cons

Public sector

Great employer

I had worked for the MRC for 29 years and found them to be an excellent employer. I have found them to be a fair, flexible and supportive organisation.

Hard to advance career

There is very minimal focus on staff development for technical staff. In IT the team is very small and we don't have the time to implement a lot of corporate best practices. The management is focused very much on the science and not on the smaller services teams. I often only see my manager for a couple of minutes each week. Due of staff politics it can be hard to get additional responsibilities, and have a good personal development plan

Pros

30 days annual leave

Cons

Long hours and lack of staff development

Research Orientated

Good place to develop advance research skills, plenty of opportunities to build good network of acquaintance for collaborations, many equipment for completion of research

Nice place to work

Days start a little early, but good work flow and great teams. Getting help on tasks is not difficult and once integrated into the team, you feel valued as a member

Pros

good hours

Cons

a bit far from where I lived

Easygoing

The departments that I worked for were very easy going and friendly. I had a good working relationship with my bosses and enjoyed my job and the work that I was doing. I learnt quite a bit about different types of research. Was based in an open plan office which was good for staff morale as we were all together.

Pros

Very flexible

Cons

No advancement

Administration for Medical Research projects

I worked here 30 years ago and I can remember very little. I learned how to manage staff and run my office. There were no computers and every system was manual, so it is hard to comment. I did enjoy working there and met some interesting people. The MRC was run on the same lines as the Civil Service, so staff were well cared for.

Pros

holiday entitlement, pension, flexi-time

Cons

salary was low for London

Cons

A very enjoyable place to work, would like to do so again

Enjoyed early starts and finishes, A helpful team to work with. Hardest task: making sure delivery requests were correct - having to deal with external storage holders. Most enjoyable part: being told that my work is of a high standard
