Support Worker in Winterbourne, Gloucestershire

Good intro to carework
Overall I did enjoy my time at Milestones, and I think it would make a good introductory organisation for someone looking at a potential career in care.I left mostly due to the pay which is not very competitive and did not reflect the work required as a residential home support worker. As time went on the hours required no longer allowed for a good work life balance - especially as the staffing issues became such that you would be covering waking nights/sleep shifts after finishing your afternoon shifts. Sadly due to ever decreasing funding to the adult social care sector homes become reliant on agency staff as staff turnover is high.

Do not work for this shocking company
Little to no support. Lack of management for guidance, mentoring or support. Rota done on an adhoc basis; at best might be done 2 weeks in advance, if you're lucky.Staff are not listened to. Management do not respond when you try calling them for advice or worse scenario in an emergency. Zero training. Lots of different, conflicting ways of conduct. Competitiveness by team leaders. Bullying and favoritism. It's a question of 'if your face fits'.

Challenging times
Cost cutting and covid restrictions Have impacted the quality of life for many residents, staff are overstretched and feel they cannot give the level of care that they want to and this is demoralising though this is care services everywhere.
Bank staff in South Gloucestershire, Gloucestershire
on 26 February 2022
Depends on the location you work at.
The bank is a good way to pick up shifts as and when you like. The problem is that some services are much better run than others, so staff experiences will vary wildly. If you are able to find some homes you are comfortable at then this could be a good little deal.Rather than pay agency's at stupidly high rates they should change their policy to give regular staff pay incentives to pick up shifts with notice.Milestones suffers from similar problems all over the sector. Staff who do not do their duties, especially in lone working roles where they can get away with it. There doesn't seem to be enough money to provide decent facilities that could enrich quality of life.Overall I'd recommend care staff to this company, but pay could be better, especially for bank who only make £9ph basic, with regular staff getting paid more. The app for checking your shifts and pay is a good addition in the past year.

Run
Don’t work for them. Terrible support for staff well being considering they are a care company. Don’t listen to staff. Managers change their mind to suit the situation, no consistency. Staff treated like they are the problem instead of addressing issues.Shocking sick pay and contracts.
