Outreach offender Learner Tutor in Erlestoke
on 25 July 2022
No personal development
Sadly there is very little wellbeing - the people skills are sadly lacking and morale is at an all time low. Everything is about numbers and money made rather than working together as an estate and focussing upon true rehabilitation.
ESOL tutor in Henley on Thames
on 7 April 2022
Challenging but rewarding.
Don't underestimate the intensity of this job. Very rewarding but intense. Great learners. But it's like any teaching job nowadays. Long hours. Constant paperwork, though some of this is being moved to digital forms. No actual coursebook : you are expected to write your own adapted material for the prison learners. Some great resources produced by other previous tutors who have put in some amazing effort but clearly burned out. This just takes so much time and isn't what I signed up for. Remember that working in a prison means unusual rules and chaotic regime. Constant tug between MKC and prison regime. Allocation of learners are for example, dealt with by the prison where they should be under the education department remit. Fantastic programme manager who really seems to want tutors to progress and is always supportive and jolly. Other managers a little more flaky and defensive of their roles.Morale isn't very good amongst tutors. Turnover is high. If you can't hit the floor running you won't succeed.A fair bit of micromanaging going on from some managers to cover for their inadequacies. Ended up feeling very much like one of the prisoners due to the hours. I'm glad I did the job but would never repeat the experience.
