Ministry of Justice UK Employee Review

Terrible management

The worst management you will ever come across in any job, anywhere in modern Britain. The service is completely on its knees in terms of staffing levels across a variety of departments - Officers, Supervising Officers, OSG's, Healthcare, Educational and Vocational instructors. The only slots that are fully employed are the management positions and there's far too many of them. The whole managing level needs stripping back, reconstructing and streamlined. They are leaking staff in the ground and it's not only as if the management don't care, it's as if they actively want this to happen. Perhaps it's cheaper to recruit new starters than have experienced staff you have to pay more for.

Pros

Good overtime money

Cons

Lack of leadership

Toxic environment

I have recently left the MOJ to pursue another career, this is following a number of years service at HMP Haverigg in Cumbria. Whilst I enjoyed some aspects of this and worked with some really good prison officers, the general culture of this place is toxic. The management show a real lack of respect to the majority of people working there instead choosing to focus their energy pursuing their own egotistical interests. This is a truly dreadful place to work, please do yourself a big favour and stay well away.

Pros

Annual Leave Allowance

Cons

Poorly managed. Arrogant and egotistical management

An absolute mess.

What is the best part of working at the company?Your colleagues will be the best part of the job, but don’t expect to get on with everyone or that everyone does the job the same way. If you thought you were joining a professional agency, stop thinking that right away. What is the most stressful part about working at the company?Management, the hours, wondering will you go home on time, constant threat of being assaulted with no consequences for prisoners. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Not great. A mix of some amazing people with some absolutely dangerous buffoons. What is a typical day like for you at the company?Long, boring, stressful and unrewarding.

Good place

Relaxed environment, poor salary. Good place to get experience, managers are supportive. Quite old school, can be repetitive, no perks just basic salary which is not in line with market rates
