Reviews about Pay & benefits for Correctional Officer at Ministry of Justice UK

Not safe

Long hours, inexperienced staff, older staff not wanting to support new staff - there is a clear divide. Ratio of staff to prisoners was unacceptable. Risky, dirty and volatile environment. Not a pleasant place to work

Salary and pension and paid sickness and holidays

Dangerous job, lack of support

Challenging, difficult job

I spent 22 years in the HM Prison service and retired 6 years ago. The job as a prison officer is challenging and difficult at times, the salary has reduced over the last 12 years and that with the loss of experienced staff reduced the service ability to run properly, things are now improving but I believe more is needed before the service can offer a safe environment for inmates and staff.

Be aware

Working in the prison service isn't easy. It can be enjoyable and rewarding but also very stressful and dangerous. Someone who wishes to work in the prison service must be aware of the dangerous prisoners and their ability to bully and persuade staff to do things that is against the law. Prisoners are very clever people at manipulating situations. Staff need to be strong and not be vulnerable and get caught up in the antics of prisoners.

Decent salary/pension, great staff

Long hours, stressful and dangerous situations
