I love my job!

Featured review

mirus Wales selected this as a representative review
I have been working for Mirus for over 6 years and I really love my job! Mirus is a lovely place to work, the people I support are absolutely fantastic and the staff I work with are friendly, helpful and hard working. The job is very rewarding and you have opportunities to better your career. Management is supportive and always there when you need them. Mirus also provides a Retail discounts scheme and an Employee Wellbeing Scheme witch you can use whenever you need to. The pay could be better but that’s a problem for any job in Social Care!

Pros

People we support, Supportive environment & Person centred aproach.

Cons

None

Hi,We really enjoyed reading this review and appreciate the work you do.It’s so important that we have people working for us who enjoy what they do and want to make a real and positive difference to the lives of the people we support. Thank you for your review.

Please invest in your staff Mirus!

I have worked for Mirus, formerly Opportunity Housing Trust, for many years and there have been good times and bad. For the last few years we've been flatlining really it was terrible during Covid and senior managers were no where to be seen when they really needed to be. Since then we have suffered major staff shortages and things just don't happen as a result. The chief executive and senior managers should be out there visiting houses but they never are and it's made us a them and us organisation. Pull your fingers out Mirus senior management and do more for your staff and clients!

Pros

Clients and some good support workers.

Cons

Too many to list at the minute nad that is sad to say.

Not enough committed staff

There are not enough committed staff working for Mirus anymore and to many posts that need filling to. I believe this is because the management are mostly not fit for the job and our reputation has gone downhill over the last few years.

Pros

Free food from clients money.

Cons

Long hours and gaps in staffing bad Managers.

Should be good but ruined by insane management!

I love working with people and building people's skills up but as people are moved around to much and there are to many gaps in staff Teams the support people get just isn't right. The frankly insane approach to and inexperienced and deluded management make things a lot worse.

Pros

Working to support people

Cons

Bad management making a bad situation worse

Chaos!!

No one seems to know what is going on and everything is very disorganised leading to bad support for the people we support. This is made worse by the fact they can't cover shifts so people often work alone, sometimes when there should be 3 staff on. The directors sit in their ivory towers pretending that things are good, just look at our social media, that's not day to day reality!!!

Pros

Hard working support workers and clients.

Cons

Hopeless management and deluded directors who do nothing!

Bad management

Management is rubbish. They cover up anything they want to and they set up the rest of the staff don't like them. I don't recommend this company for anyone else.

I definitely wouldn't recommend Mirus to anyone. Look elsewhere!!!!

There are to many responsibilities for a ridiculous salary and absolutely lack of support from the company. There are also uneccesarily unpleasant managers who are in a power trip. I was looking forward to being a Support Worker but I definitely wouldn't recommend Mirus to anyone. Look elsewhere!!!!

Pros

Working with clients can be rewarding.

Cons

No support or teamwork as a result and clicky and unpleasant managers and, senior managers completely absent.

Management just don't care!

Mirus senior management just don’t care about their clients or their staff. Other managers will guilt trip you into picking up extra shifts and if you whistleblow they won’t do anything about it because they are so short staffed.

Pros

None

Cons

Too many to list but mainly bad management bad leadership and no training or support.

Great pay

Great pay as long as you are willing and able to work all sorts of shift patterns. Lots of different places to work, one of which will be allocated to you. I've worked in at least 5 based in Cardiff and all were lovely.

We like to think our pay is competitive, especially in the current climate. We also find our additional benefits and wellbeing support is quite robust. We're also really fortunate to have a £300 refer a friend scheme, that we've found works so well for us.Thanks for your feedback!

Challenging, but rewarding

I've worked at mirus for 7 years now and it's been challenging but really rewarding. I have a really good team and we help each other out. We have a full staff team and we only have to cover when a colleague's ill. But, when I was ill they covered for me. My manager has helped me. Covid was a really challenging time and it was stressful but we really helped each other out as a team. The people we support are amazing, they have so many fun things they like to do. I get to go to shows with them and join in their hobbies. I couldn't imagine not supporting them.

Pros

the people I support, it's rewarding, I go to shows with them, join in with their hobbies, the pay is okay, I went from part time to full time

Cons

it is challenging, the hours can be a challenge.

This is a wonderful review. We know supporting vulnerable people can be challenging, but it's so rewarding to make a real difference to someone's life. The people we support are amazing and it's always great to be able to get involved in some of the fantastic hobbies they have. I'm so glad that you have a strong team around you, what a wonderfully positive thing. We're always grateful for the wonderful things that colleagues do to support people. Thank you. If you send an e-mail to recruitment@mirus-wales.org.uk I can speak with you about mirus moments, which is how we reward colleagues who live our values.

Mirus used to be a good.

I started with Mirus when they were called Opportunity Housing Trust and it used to be a lot better. I used to be proud to say I work for Mirus but now I avoid mentioning it. The senior management have ruined it over the years and now things are falling apart. Support Workers are still hard workers but management is shocking.

Pros

Support Workers.

Cons

The senior managers and managers.

Toxic management

Awful place to work, you may be lucky and work with some brilliant clients, but management like to over manage and belittle staff and it does ruin any enjoyment from the job. Work is hard at times, it's mentally draining mostly, what you don't need is uptight and disruptive management constantly emailing or ringing to ask you to stay on, or try to guilt you into doing a double sleep in. (It happens all the time, I did a triple sleep in , total of 78 hours working over Christmas) and if you dare flag anything up you'll be victimised. They will force you to go on holiday with clients, with false promises of pay, i went abroad for a week, with a client and staff member, they promised we'd get paid for full week, 24 hours a day, so would have been paid 1680 pounds approximately for week away. They paid us 250 pounds each, the staff that stayed behind got paid more. And when we brought it up they said we had a free holiday, ask yourself when was the last time you took a severely disabled person abroad as part of your holiday....the company is a joke.Just avoid them, if you want a care job look literally anywhere else.

Pros

None. Literally zero pros, management ruin the joy of working with good people

Cons

Management, pay, false promises, harassment on days off, blame culture.

There is progression

During my time at mirus I have had the opportunity to progress in my career, having worked and been promoted on three occasions. They share job opportunities each week, given everyone the chance to grow. Being part of the Aspiring Managers programme helped me grow.I have had challenges with my mental health in my time here and have always been supported, using th free face to face councelling and their wellbeing hub.I really enjoy the mirus Better Together events where people we support, Support Workers, Managers, Admin, Office staff get together. The awards ceremony held each year is a wonderful time to celebrate everyone's achievements so you recognise the value we are all making.

Pros

Good salary, wellbeing hub, support network, working with vulnerable people, holidays

Cons

Challenging

Thank you for your feedback. We're really proud of our Aspiring Managers programme and how much it has developed colleagues from Support Workers to Managers. Our Wellbeing Hub and Wellbeing Champions is a great support network, and our employee assistance programme is a 24/7 service that's really helpful.

Value staff & people with disabilities

Great teams of staff and good managers. Reputation for growing the next managers. I was coached and trained from support worker to manager. Maintained a great Investors in people gold award. They are known to be the best social care charity. Love how they’ve helped me be happy at work :-)

Thanks for your feedback. We're really proud that we've continued to maintain our Gold Investors in people award and the continual great things we do to support people, both people we support and colleagues.

Don’t listen to negative feedback, it’s sour grapes.

Sad to see reviews from disgruntled gutluss wonders, sabotaging the good work of staff and managers who currently working hard caring and supporting the individual. No one gets things right all the time, but we all try our best. Really annoyed keyboard warriors are trying to put people off from applying for a job that supports the people to have their best lives. Going shopping, on holidays, cinema, walks, meals out, chilling with them and watching movies at home, helping people to make their own food and look after their own home.

Pros

enjoyable, very rewarding

Cons

Can be difficult and stressful with the responsibility we have to support people.

Worst company for staff because of management

In my time at Mirus that used to be called Opportunity Housing Trust things just got worse. I think the senior staff are to blame for things getting so bad but they live in ivory towers and don't care about support staff. Good teams got broken up and people just weren't treated right. Look elsewhere if you want to support people.

Pros

Used to be nice but then nothing really.

Cons

Nasty managers and people that don't care.

Terrible place to work (Swansea)

The Management are awful because their all friends that's how they got their jobs not because they're experience or qualified, they haven't got a clue and it's embarrassing to watch experience support workers educating them.

The right house and the right manager makes the job enjoyable.

Having worked for the company for over 20 years my experience has been very positive. Working in a few peoples homes over the years, it's the support of your manager and staff team that make your job enjoyable. There have been a few ups and downs over the years but now the hourly rate and sleepin payments are the best they have been. I have always had positive feedback from my current manager and other other departments of the company for the work that I do and my support of the people I work with.

Pros

Out for meals, holidays abroad and weekend breaks, wages, paid to sleep.

Cons

Long hours but that's what you agree to when you accept the role.

Thank you for your honest feedback. Thank you for your service these last 20 years and we look forward to many more years. Getting to share hobbies and activities with the people we support is always wonderful, and as you said supporting them on holiday is always a wonderful experience. All the best.

Bad mental health experience in the end due to being pressured into working extra hours I didn't want to cover big gaps in staffing

I enjoyed working with the people I was supporting and some of the Support Workers. But there were not enough staff and I was pressured into working a lot longer than I wanted to on many occasions and did back to back shifts to cover the holes. When I tried to raise that I was tired and struggling I was told that I would be letting the team down if I didn't work more shifts. When I told the manager I did not want to work extra shifts for a while I felt ignored and targeted. In the end I decided to leave as I felt so uncomfortable going in and the atmosphere felt intimidating.

Pros

I enjoyed supporting people

Cons

Long hours and not enough staff

I can't see things improving!

Working for Mirus has been getting worse for years but now I feel that things are at breaking point. I have been very loyal to the company but don't feel they have returned that loyalty. I know this is how a lot of people feel and if they didn't have loyalty to the Service Users then things would be a lot worse. Saying that there are dangerous holes in staffing and everyone I know is constantly exhausted. I can't see things improving so I'm looking to get out now. It's such a shame senior management don't seem to care about the staff, that's what makes the company.

Pros

Not many anymore.

Cons

Massive gaps in staff teams and failing senior managers and directors.
