I love my job!

Featured review

mirus Wales selected this as a representative review
I have been working for Mirus for over 6 years and I really love my job! Mirus is a lovely place to work, the people I support are absolutely fantastic and the staff I work with are friendly, helpful and hard working. The job is very rewarding and you have opportunities to better your career. Management is supportive and always there when you need them. Mirus also provides a Retail discounts scheme and an Employee Wellbeing Scheme witch you can use whenever you need to. The pay could be better but that’s a problem for any job in Social Care!

Pros

People we support, Supportive environment & Person centred aproach.

Hi,We really enjoyed reading this review and appreciate the work you do.It’s so important that we have people working for us who enjoy what they do and want to make a real and positive difference to the lives of the people we support. Thank you for your review.

Currently a Toxic Workplace!

I am a loyal employee of Mirus once Opportunity Housing Trust and I feel the new management is destroying the organisation. It's all smiles up front but I and many of my colleagues feel intimidated and it's not a pleasant environment to work in any more. I hope people don't stick around for long and the company returns to what it was, a good honest employer.

Pros

Few these days.

Cons

Oppressive new management.

Work colleagues great. Management needed to be more proactive

Enjoyed taking care of service users but could be very stressful if you had no support from management..always asked to do overtime even when I was on annual leave. Work colleagues were great, helpful and understanding. Night shifts could be difficult at times.

Has the potential to be a great position

What could have been a great position in a potentially good organisation was ruined by Micromanaging Area Managers; a lot of blame shifting and and obscene amount of pressure put on team managers and assistant team managers Minimal support from Area Manager, you were expected to cover all manner of shifts, most services understaffed so you were robbing from Peter to pay Paul - could be great but the whole cluster set up is wrong and 1 manager has far too many houses to be responsible for!

Pros

The individuals you support

Cons

Hours, expectations from senior managers, work-life balance

Not a good employer

Mirus are not a good employer and you don't count or matter to them. Neither do the people they support. They only care about there false image and the senior staff.

Cons

Challenging and rewarding

Lots of opportunities to develop myself and progress through this company. Though I have been asked to work overtime/unsociable hours - I have never been made to. It's just a bit of extra in my pocket when I want it.Hardest part of job: It's 24/7 - as a manager I do my best to be available to my staff whilst maintaining my own work/life balance, don't always get it right!Best part of the job: the people supported and (most) of the staff!

Great staff and management

Best job I’ve been in. Staff and management are very approachable and understanding. Values and ethos shared by everyone. Incredibly person centred, I’m very proud to be part of a team that go above and beyond for the service users.

Good place to work

I've worked for mirus for nearly 2 years and my experience has been very positive. My manager is very approachable and resolves any problems quickly. The atmosphere in work is relaxed, and we can all have a laugh together. There is potential for progression for those who are willing to put the work in, I've been put forward for the Aspiring Managers Programme and am enjoying learning more. The people we support and their families are all great! You are always out and about, and it's rewarding to see how much of a difference you can make in their lives.

Pros

Not stuck in one place all day, opporunutiy for overtime

Cons

Happy work place

I can only write about where I work, but after many years of working in care I find that I have found somewhere that I am happy to go to work and not wake up with the feeling of dread of what the day will bring. We have a good supportive manager, staff that are a good team and fantastic people we support. Everyday is different,I would be lying if I said it couldn't be stressful as some days will be,there is always help and supprt if needed. I feel the people we support are always put first and they have a very good home life.

Pros

Excellent work colleagues

A lovely place to work!

Mirus is genuinely a lovely place to work. Like most of health and social care, there can be periods where we’re short staffed, but managers chip in and go on shift to help out to relieve the pressure for us to pick up overtime.Managers go above and beyond for us to show their appreciation, and staff in my service have all been here a long time now. Again, as with any health and social care job… you’re either here for a short period, or you’re here for years! The pay is good, and there is opportunity to pick up overtime in any service if you want it! My manager and colleagues are all supportive, and will always listen if something is wrong. Mirus also have an Employee Assistance Programme should you wish to speak to a professional, and it’s completely confidential. Having read some of the negative reviews, I have to say - a job with mirus is what you make it. If you’re a lazy worker then you won’t enjoy it. But if you have a good work ethic, you will love working as a support worker here.

Pros

Employee Assistance Programme, flexible working, good pay

Cons

Some periods of being short staffed in services

Was an okay work place till mencap took over

Bad management awful no support from particular mangers and the way some spoke about the person's they support was appalling. No working as a team. The only positive thing about mirus was the people we support they were amazing and deserve so much better.

Thank you for your comment. We're sorry that since another provider took over you're not having a great experience. We wish you and the people we used to support the very best.

I used to work for them and I didn't realise how bad they were until I moved to another organisation

Working for Mirus was a miserable experience but I didn't realise how bad they were until I left to work for another organisation. Management were awful inexperienced and all over the shop and the senior managers were worse. I am surprised Mirus keep winning contracts there must still be a lot of lying going on about what they say they do. The reality is they are bad for the clients and the staff. Work there if you want to learn bad practice and how to do as little as possible for people.

Pros

Leaving

Cons

There are few positives, management were all awful.

Happy and productive workplace

I’ve been working in Mirus just over a year and my confidence in work and my day to day life has gone so high. I’ve got a lot of experience in just over a year of being in this company. The staff are so friendly which makes it so easy to wake up and come to work. I’ve also had so much support from my manager and assistant manager as I had no experience in the job before I started and they’ve been so kind and helpful. I really enjoy working in this company and I 100% recommend working here.

Pros

Good training opportunities

Cons

Unsociable hours

Thanks for the 4 years and we're looking forward to so many more! We're glad you're enjoying the time with us. Thanks for the review and letting people know what working for mirus really means.

I am proud to be a part of Mirus

I have worked for Mirus for over 18 years, and although at times the pressures of social care can feel overwhelming at times, I couldn't feel any happier in my role. I work with many amazing support workers, and we all work together to help the people we support live a happy, healthy meaningful life. Mirus has a great learning and development team, and the company support staff well to complete qualifications and to progress. My overall experience of senior management has been mostly positive over the years!

Please invest in your staff Mirus!

I have worked for Mirus, formerly Opportunity Housing Trust, for many years and there have been good times and bad. For the last few years we've been flatlining really it was terrible during Covid and senior managers were no where to be seen when they really needed to be. Since then we have suffered major staff shortages and things just don't happen as a result. The chief executive and senior managers should be out there visiting houses but they never are and it's made us a them and us organisation. Pull your fingers out Mirus senior management and do more for your staff and clients!

Pros

Clients and some good support workers.

Cons

Too many to list at the minute nad that is sad to say.

As you may be aware sadly no one was allowed to visit homes during covid measures and lockdown. Something we all truly felt. Our vacancy hours are lower than they've been for nearly 2 years, which shows the wonderful direction we're going post covid. Senior Managers do make engagement visits and we visit people we supports home all across Wales. I've gone on a visit myself in the last few months and it was amazing to speak with people supported in Cardiff.

Not enough committed staff

There are not enough committed staff working for Mirus anymore and to many posts that need filling to. I believe this is because the management are mostly not fit for the job and our reputation has gone downhill over the last few years.

Pros

Free food from clients money.

Cons

Long hours and gaps in staffing bad Managers.
