A steady, secure workplace
Work involves a lot of responsibility, mostly regarding health and safety, but you are rewarded with decent pay, work conditions and a 'job for life'. Seemingly heading towards more weekend and night working for maintenance staff

No career progression
More who you know than what you know. If your face doesn’t fit, forget it. Totally wasted my time doing extra work and responsibilitiesUsed to love working here and now I feel completely overlooked.

Toxic
I’ve worked at network rail for a number of years and mostly enjoyed it but the management are terrible at the holgate depot and the atmosphere is toxic. The recently retired production manager was possibly the nastiest person I’ve ever worked with and caused so many problems for a number of workers resulting many to go off sick.Thankfully he’s gone now but his side kick the cage fighting dwarf is still around in the back ground.I hope things do improve for the younger workers but I’m not sure.

Must be a self starter
Lots of opportunities and passionate staff. I had nothing but support in my time there. Management style varies so do your research and ask questions at interview. Some managers are very onboard with agile/flexible working and this usually goes hand in hand with trusting you to get on with your job and listening to and embracing new ideas. Other managers are still stuck in the dark ages; goes hand in hand with the micro managing style.

Comfortable and accommodating workplace
I have worked at Network Rail for three years now and can honestly say they are a good company to work for. They have accommodated my wishes to work from home and go into the office once a month and agreed that I can work three days a week. The management are easy to approach and will listen if you have any concerns. I previously worked for BT, and wish they had been so responsive to my needs. There is free tea and coffee in the office, and also a good canteen with reasonably priced meals. All in all a good place to work. Shame there’s no free travel though!
