Network Rail

Network Rail Employee Review

A great organisation with a caring attitude

Running such a complex railway is a serious and responsible task. Thankfully Network Rail is a highly professional outfit and a pleasure to work in with some very committed and knowledgeable people.Things can move slowly and so staying at the cutting edge of technology is challenging as the rail network is so vast. There’s never a dull moment though and there will always plenty to do due to the shear scale of the railway.

Pros

Flexible working, modern equipment, great people

Cons

The complex and technical nature of the railway may not be everyone’s cup of tea.

Front line staff culture & no benefits.

Shift work, no flexible working but you have to be flexible for them & cover all shifts over seven days. Your health or work life balance is irrelevant to them - you follow the rota. Strange work colleagues; foreign & indigenous; clearly displaying signs of mental retardedness - SSMs'/managers are usually promoted from these ranks. Pay has dropped considerably since I started (was on old contract) & I would not want to do it on the current salary. Silly polyester uniform is given & you are supposed to feel proud wearing it & eager to help low IQ customers' with their enquiries - all on low pay. They can't even give you free train travel to make up for the low wages!

Pros

Job security

Cons

Shift work, toxic work environment, low pay, no free travel.

If your face fits and you don't mind sucking up to management and stroking their egos then it's the career for you.

Don't bother you'll have no life , and be surrounded by two faced people including management . Extremely annoying when you have to put up with being side stepped for promotion and progression, Even after completing and passing numerous competencies for safety critical roles! Extremely frustrating.
