Before applying for the job, always look into the job, they don't tell you, you have to work 6 days a week, lower rate of pay, you do more work than mobile drivers, they don't provide you with trousers, discoloured t shirts,

Pros

It's a job

Cons

Working 6 days ÂŁ10phr, do more work than mobile drivers, less pay

Avoid

As long as you keep your opinions to yourself and be cloned into there way of working you will be ok. No innovation. A very historic council. Grey coats

Pros

Low pace Flexible working

Cons

Toxic culture. No innovation. Scared of change. Historic way of working.

Don’t apply

I would not recommend working for Newport City Council. Especially the Community Safety Department as the manager has no skills to manage a team and no communication skills. Problems reported to her and not resolved. Shift pattern is terrible, no work life balance, terrible pay for the role we undertake, also doing other departments work which we are not trained to do.

Pros

Camaraderie with team mate

Cons

No work life balance, Terrible shift pattern, Pay does not match the role

Terrible management and organisation

Working for Newport City Council's Youth Offending Sefvice, I regularly turned up to find sessions had been cancelled and I had not been informed, therefore making my trip pointless. Information that was needed was incredibly difficult to come by and there was very little support available. Equipment and facilities were dated and in poor condition and management didn't appear to care.

Pros

Hours were good.

Cons

Terrible organisation, lack of care from managers, I was not given the equipment needed.

don't bother

- unfair recruitment practices with predetermined actions - favourable treatment for family members/friends of existing employees (particularly at the senior mgmt level) - slow paced and mentally stuck still in 1970's with no willingness to change and huge negativity and blame culture - equal opportunities is a tick box exercise - organisation makeup does not reflect the local community (very low uptake of employees from minority backgrounds. The same applies to promotion opportunities) -

busy, not enough staff, management unable to improve due to cuts

too much work for level of staff, most people work out of hours to keep up, no parking, not enough incentive to progress, support is there if requested but skills are not taken into consideration, no scope to move for secondment very often, too many cuts is the problem

Pros

canteen is good

Cons

over worked and not appreciated, no parking

Great start + interesting beginnings

Working for NCC has been a great start for my life in work. I've learnt a lot and feel capable to achieve working in local government or a civil service enviroment thanks to my current role.

Pros

Flexi time, pay for apprentices isn't bad.

Cons

Security after apprenticeships, annual leave isn't well explained.

They will hire the staff who would not cut it in the real workd

A culture of bullying ,that seldom gets addressed , the sick pay scheme is frequently abused where staff take advantage taking time off for flimsy of reasons as they know they can , this would not be tolerated in the private sector ,

Works as seasonal parks leisure attendant for Ncc, I have a great job, not only do I get to work outside, but its a job which I enjoy, making sure parks looking clean, tidy and safe to walk in, but always on hand should anyone need me, plus I have great managers, and colleagues not only as the rangers but also the gardeners, who are there should I need advice

Very narrow minded and suspicious of change

Worked there for 5 years very critical of new ideas and work processes very set in ways to much influence for councillors working to own agendas not for the benefit of constitutes

Pros

Local

Cons

Poor parking

It was a busy hard and fast paced job. you had to manage time which could be difficult with a high case load. Although it was a humbling job especially if you wish to make a difference in peoples lives

Insightful experience

I worked at Newport City Council on a voluntary basis so cannot comment on salary or job security. However the work/life balance was good and the management extremely positive and helpful. The culture where I worked was a good work environment.

Pros

Insightful experience

Cons

I couldn't work there longer due to University commitments.

Unfair pay for support staff in education

Working as a Teaching Assistant is a wonderful role to have, but due to ever growing responsibilities with never growing wages, the role is becoming very unfair, with pay not reflecting how hard a Teaching Assistant works.
