Good for progression
Administrative Officer (Current Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 21 August 2023

No longer the good career choice it once was, would not recommend it
Office Administrator (Current Employee) - Derry - 22 September 2023
What is the best part of working at the company? Able to work flexi time. Can do minimum work and still get full pay same as those doing more. What is the most stressful part about working at the company? No support from senior management either to deal with colleagues who do next to nothing or when dealing with stress at work and/or home, or to support mental health. What is the work environment and culture like at the company? Staff feel devalued and morale extremely low. No motivation for staff. No staff support or rewards. What is a typical day like for you at the company? Every day is like groundhog day.

Nice people, slow day
Administrative Officer (Current Employee) - Belfast - 21 June 2023
The work is easy but can be repetitive and boring. The people are lovely. Job opportunities for promotion are far and few between. Flexi is great if you have enough work to keep you going however in some roles there is barely any work to do so the day is very long.
Pros
flexi hours
Cons
poor pay, boring work

good place to work
Civil Servant (Current Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 20 June 2023
Have no complaints, great place to work, great people, and work life balance. Pay issues could do with being resolved and brought in line. But overall positive environment to work in.

Great hybrid working
Aa (Current Employee) - Home Based - 2 June 2023
Great team and excellent working setup. In one day a month at the minute can't complain. All other days working from home. Could be better paid but flexible working hard to beat

Flexibility
Administrator (Former Employee) - Belfast - 16 May 2023
Flexi was a benefit to the job and overtime however senior management can be an issue so always be on their good side. Staff great to work with and perfect location

A decent place to work
Executive Officer (Former Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 11 May 2023
You are well trained in your job and have a clear role set out. Work can be at times monotonous and boring, the work itself is not difficult but the workload can be at times high which is stressful. However the pay is decent and there are opportunities to advance through training and boards.

Good place to work
Administrator (Current Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 4 May 2023
Management are very understanding and will try their best to accommodate. A very positive experience working in the civil service and other staff are always willing to help and answer any questions.

Poor salary with no pay increases
Accountant (Former Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 10 April 2023
Below inflation pay increases for last 15 years! Stay away if you can find anything else! Its mostly dead end jobs for most staff, moral is very low and better opportunities in other places!
Pros
None
Cons
Never pay increases

Helpful colleagues.
Administrative Officer (Former Employee) - Belfast City Centre, County Antrim - 31 March 2023
Enjoyed working in my role, helpful colleagues. Depending on circumstances may be able to work in office or remotely. I feel that some people could get away with doing much less work that others and this is something management could work on.

Jobs at Northern Ireland Civil Service
No structure to allow existing workers to gain promotion
Executive Officer (Current Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 21 December 2022
No loyalty to existing staff, makes internal promotion or advancement pretty much non existent. Absolute dump in general. You could do a temporary promotion job for 3 years without issue and still not be considered appropriate for promotion, would rather bring in agency staff etc.
Pros
Pension, leave entitlement, sick pay
Cons
Too many to list

Managers out of touch
Administrative Officer (Current Employee) - Belfast/remote working - 12 December 2022
Used to be a great job, now managers are not good at dealing with changes in employees circumstances and making changes required by law for people with disabilities. Whole management system needs a complete overhaul.

Agency staff
Poor treatment of agency staff. Long recruitment process for substantive. Good work life balance, variable workload and responsibilities. Job placement could be better matched to skills.

Easy going
ICT Technician (Current Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 13 August 2022
Easy going. Safe job. Good working hours. Can work from home if you’re in IT side of things. Clueless senior management though who have no common sense or logic.

laid back experience
Administrative Assistant (Current Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 29 March 2022
a laid back place to work. I have worked here throughout the pandemic and continue to do so. Flexible working arrangements in place, which help with work/life balance

Depends on what department you work for
Executive Officer (Current Employee) - Bangor - 18 March 2022
I did 9 years for DFC/DWP, Belfast benefit centre and this was a terrible experience and I would not advise anyone on seeking employment here. After 8 hard years of trying to get out I finally moved firstly to DfI and the Department of Education. Both departments are amazing and in the last few years my career has advanced since I left the Plaza benefits office. Unfortunately for lower grade new entrants there is a possibility they might end up in this type of department which I compare to a badly run call centre. However for anyone lucky enough to go into Department of Education or Infrastructure, then this is a great opportunity and I’d thoroughly recommend

Excellent
Staff Officer (Current Employee) - Belfast, County Antrim - 14 March 2022
A fantastic work environment, friendly colleagues and management. Opportunities to undertake courses to improve yourself. Agency staff unable to apply for permanent employment other than through external recruitment drive - despite doing the job.
Pros
Work life balance, home working, great colleagues
Cons
Stability / no permanent opportunity for agency staff

In Forestry Division mainly office work, good learning experience. Then I worked for Police Federation and loved the work in various police stations.
Confidentail Typist seconded to the Police Federation NI (Civil Service) (Former Employee) - Belfast - 18 February 2022
Days were always exciting and different. Taking shorthand during interrogations and typing from confidential tapes. Hardest job was audio typing serious crimes which was harrowing. Loved the teamwork working with office and police staff in various police stations. We reported to the Chief Superintendent who managed the Police Station.
Pros
Good althought few pros - good pay and good teamwork.
Cons
Long hours. Danger at work on a daily basis. Moving between stations at short notice.

Good place to work, very hard to get a transfer to a different department.
Administrative Officer (Former Employee) - Belfast - 10 February 2022
On the whole a good place to work, the people are mostly friendly, the work can be hard and stressful, a lot depends on the department you are placed in and therefore the type of work you are involved in. Promotions are very hard to come by, you have to be in the right place at the right time. Job security flexi time and leave is generally good.
Pros
Flexi time and leave
Cons
Can stressful work

Would never recommend
Care Worker (Current Employee) - Lisburn, County Down - 14 August 2021
Poor and stressful. Management don’t care and there is a culture of bullying within our establishment. I would never encourage anyone to go into this area of the Civil service.
