Supportive environment but lacks job security

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Great friendly and supportive place of employment, however the positions available were mainly on bank for staff who were in the learner support sphere, with little or no opportunity for a standard contract of employment. There was some opportunity to gain advanced qualifications in the role, the costs of which were met by the college, although its difficult to say what the situation is on that now. Overall a good environment to work in but not a reliable place for job security in the role of learner support.

Pros

Free travel to other campus's

Cons

Bank work mainly

Was a good place to work until Redundancies

A typical day was going to class and having a chat with students to get their take on what they've been upto and see if this will impact on their learning and interaction with other students and staff as this can have a bearing on attention and if any flare ups could happen. Damage limitation and to track behaviour was a large part of my job as well as trying to boost self esteem and increase confidence if that is lacking. Other ares of support was to help with Literacy and reading in the classroom or one to one if required.

Pros

Off during half term

Cons

Wages equated through out year

nice location

Typical day varied from day to day Supporting students with varying degrees of learning disability, taking notes in class for those unable to do so Create assignment guides to assist students towards completion of assignments. Managing challenging behaviour and students who have mental health issues. During period of student review I would input the review onto Pro Monitor. Responsible for initial assessments of student and the completion of support plans input directly onto Pro Monitor during student interview with tutor prior to commencement of the course. Attending meetings with course team leaders, student parent/carer and professional representative to resolve issues raised during meetings. Also part of my role Mentor new staff Retrain existing staff when required Update student records on Pro Monitor Supervise staff during periods of student review updating reviews completed
