1 of the best places I have ever worked for, but with it's flaws

Indeed featured review

It's not as easy as you may think, but it is a very rewarding job!Managers are very kind, down to hearth and they listen to you, collegues are nice and customers are 99% nice also. The job itself it's pleasurable but require both phisical and mental strenth.Pay is not very high but gets better with time and performance.Rotas are VERY bad. You will NOT know your week rota until is Monday late afternoon and you're expected to be always available.Holidays are complicated to ask because they have not enough staff that can cover you.The hardest part of the job is to put up a tent in a garden with all the heavy equipment while is bad weather outside, the best part of the job is when you see all those children happy and you party and play videogames with them. I personally also like driving long distances too, as long as i'm getting paid for it, and they do, quite fairly. All in all, is a brilliant job, and gets better and better as the managers are always there listening to your feedbacks as an employee, if it had a better pay/career progression/rota in advance it would be the perefect job.

Official response from Pop Up Arcade

Hi,Thank you for the very fair feedback. As you said, it's a very rewarding job but it's not always easy. We really appreciate the hard work done by our Games Masters and we're constantly working to solve problems and make the job the best it can be. I did just want to clarify something about our rosters. All our staff have set working days and will always have the same two days off each week, it is only the actual events that are finalised on a Monday. I absolutely understand where the reviewer's coming from and we're working to publish the detailed rosters as early as we can. We're not perfect, we still have problems to solve but we believe in the work we do and we really value our front line staff. We will continue to work to make this the best job possible.

I loved working here

I really loved working for the company. The team is a great bunch of people with similar hobbies and interests to me. The parties and work itself was rewarding, fun, didn’t feel like work. The only reason I left was because the hours are evening and weekends and I now have a family and wanted to be there for them. I wish the company all the best though I have made great memories and friends there!

Great fun great company

I worked initially as a games master and then progressed onto office duties as the HR officer which includes customer service duties. No day is the same which is what makes this workplace fun and exciting. Best part of my day was making sure a birthday boy or girl would have the best event possible ( and joining in playing games and getting paid was never too shabby).Days vary in length sometimes you get a slightly longer day but then that's made up for by sometimes having a short one, the staff in the office are fair and make sure your week is not too unbalanced with workload. The management and staff were all very open and collaborative and would make the day go quick with banter and laughs.Since leaving ive taken other customer service roles and by far know this was one of the best places I've ever worked and should the opportunity arise would go back tomorrow.

No day is the same, get paid to play games.

A fulfilling and rewarding experience

Working at Pop Up Arcade has been one of the most enjoyable and fulfilling experiences of my working career. Starting out as a host your standard day consists of maintaining your equipment (Making sure all your consoles are up to date and all your equipment in good working order) before heading out, setting up, and hosting an unforgettable party.Hosting is a highlight of the job. Simply put it's taking part in a party, making sure all the equipment works as intended, that everybody is having a great time, and playing games while you do so. There's nothing more rewarding than being told you've helped a kid have the best birthday ever!Management are easy to talk to, and happy to help with any issues or questions you might have - and recognise and congratulate the hard work and effort you put in. Everyone within the company has a passion for gaming, so there's always common grounds for discussion whenever you're in or about the office (And if you don't mind being bombarded with Fortnite, Minecraft, or Pokemon questions by the guests, plenty of good conversation in the field whilst hosting as well!)Day length is variable. Some days you may only have one party, but during peak times you're likely to have two (and at really busy times, three) parties in a day. You're made aware of what your weekend is going to look like earlier in the week so you can plan your social calendar accordingly; weekends are always busy but you always get time off during the week to compensate. All in all, my experience with Pop Up Arcade has been very rewarding, fulfilling, and enjoyable from day -

Incredibly fulfilling and enjoyable, plenty of time outside in the Summer, Tips & Birthday Cake

Primarily weekend based, Potentially longer than expected days due to traffic

As the years go on, I enjoy working here more and more!

Before working here I used to struggle to get up and go to work, I would call in sick a lot and having to prep myself to get out of bed or even out of the door. Since working here I have hardly ever been off sick (only when I genuinely am) and get out of the bed in the morning with ease. It really makes a difference to your life when you have a good job to wake up for! I have learned a lot and feel like I have grown within the company whilst the company itself has been growing! I regularly get feedback from my manager which allows me to learn new things. The most enjoyable part of this job is knowing that you made a child's birthday amazing! When the reviews come back from a job and you read the parents comment on how we made the birthday really makes you smile! The hardest part of the job is saying no to the birthday cake and pizza at the parties. There is only so much you should have but it's always sooo GOOD!

Great place work if you like gaming and kids

The best part of the job is seeing how excited the kids are at the events, you feel like you've done something good at the end of the day. That's not a feeling I've had a pervious Jobs. There's quite a bit of driving involved, at least a 3rd of your shift will be driving so if you don't like being in the car it's probably not a great job for you. They have big focus on promoting from within, all the managers started as Games Masters, they want managers who really know how to do the job before they get promoted.

The Gaming Tech is really cool, I love the VR

Work is mostly weekends during the day so you need to take leave for things like weddings.

Awesome, Fun and Rewarding

I've worked at the company for 3 years now and can honestly say its the best job ever. The management team are on their A game and are always there to help when you need it, they are incredibly supportive and understanding. My role in the company is now a vice captain as I have been progressing through the company to get where I want to be and the managers and team captains are all very supportive and helpful when it comes to my progression.By far the best part about this job is making great memories for the children on their birthdays, I love running the events as they are so rewarding especially seeing the looks of excitement and happiness on the kids faces as soon as they see all of our gaming equipment.I have made many friends working for this company as everybody who works there is genuine and kind hearted, I've never worked in a place where I'm not judged by somebody but since working here I feel included and valued all the time. The hardest part of the job is packing up the equipment and saying goodbye to all the kids, when at the parties you laugh with them a lot and when its time to pack everything away you almost don't want to, if I could I would leave the equipment so they can stay and have even more fun!We sometimes have team bonding sessions which is just when a group of us (all are welcome) go out and play mini golf or go to comedy nights or my personal favourite was when we were sent to a Halloween event. This was a real bonding experience that brought everybody closer together as there was a lot of fun and laughter had by all.Another great part about -

Making the kids Birthdays as great as you possibly can

Dont be fooled!

Former employee. The job description is deceiving, yes it is essentially running children's birthday parties, however that's about the best part and only that!Heavy ofen damaged and dirty equipment which you will either take the blame for by management or have to embarrassingly explain away to a customer. Long 12+ hour days with extensive travel in my own experience over 3 hours away from the office location. If under 25 will be expected to use your own vehicle. All weekend work which creeps into the week and leaves little room for you own social life.No room for progression as its a small buissness and there is none, however management are good at creating fictional responsibility to keep staff members onside. As for the select management, no prior management training or experience. Would do best to cover up poor customer experiences and do very best to dodge and avert a poor customer review. All in all fine short term if need of some quick cash, however would not recommend long term. Since leaving have undergone management training within a large company and can see how poorly run this company was.

Long hours/poor management.

Poor management and too long shifts.

Awful company to work at. they treat you nice at first, and then start to give you challenging and painful events. They make you drive for hours, no breaks. Driving while tired. Hungry on shifts. sometimes 3+ events in a day half way across the country. Make you overload your own car with equipment and makes it sometimes dangerous to drive. No regonition for the hard work put in as the management can't see you work. Preassure on getting 5 star reviews. If you don't get any, they'll get rid of you no matter how hard you try. Don't be fooled by the job description.

Long Hours, Bad Management, Awful Communication, Driving while tired.

It’s been over two years and I still love my job.

Working at Pop Up Arcade is the best job I’ve ever had. There’s nothing more rewarding than listening to the excitement and laughter that we bring to a child’s birthday party. We do other events too but mainly children’s birthdays. I start my day by checking My phone and seeing what types of jobs I have, when it’s time to clock in I make sure I’m at the office and ready to load a company car, then I leave for my party. The equipment isn’t all light be nobody expects me to carry everything at once and as long as I’m on time there’s no need to hurry. Once I arrive I’m always greeted by excited children and happy parents, after all, it’s a party, which makes every work day a happy day. Other jobs have interactions with miserable people, not us. Throughout the party there are times when children need help with games or changing games but when there’s nothing to do, which is often, I’m always playing the games. It’s always a good laugh when the children challenge me to a game of their choice, I don’t hold back XD.The worst part of this job is when you have to leave and the children want you to stay. After packing up I’m either heading off to another party or back to the office to drop the kit and car off. There are times when I’ll be asked to help out with cleaning and fixing the equipment but that’s all part of the job, I would rather make sure the equipment I’m using at a party works fine and looks good but that’s it! I’ve not once been asked to do anything that wasn’t directly related to parties or party equipment. Our boss and managers are constantly praising hosts -

Making a child’s birthday the best they’ve ever had.

Telling children the party is over.

Don't join this company all about management

The work is good job allocated by phone go to yard pick up your van and kit drive to destination set up and host for 1.5 to 2hours and drive back to yard. Sounds good well it is at first then management get in the way you have a weekly meeting and this is where it all goes up in smoke any job needs doing you have to do clean the yard, paint the yard, but flooring clean toilets u get what I'm trying to say they take the pxxx and if you don't do it you get targeted by management . The wrork culture is good lots of nice people work there put most jobs your by your self management not so "if you don't have nothing to say don't say anything" so I have nothing to say on that . The hardest part of the job is going to the yard and dealing with management . Most enjoyable part is when you get to your destination set up and host so much fun all the time. P.S when I work there you had tents jobs for 2 people it's now a 1 man job it was hard with 2 of us so good luck with with trying to get the tent in someone house with bad access. And some of the team have been put on a 0 hour contract why ? To keep control do what management say don't say anything bad about the way management works it's not long term use you and when it gets past a year start looking for a new job because 2 years u have working rights and management don't want you to have rights.

Ok pay hosting is so much fun.

Management all about getting you to do as much of there job for them and do your job on top
