Hard work but enjoyable

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Always had a good management team. Hard work. Enjoyable. I progressed upto senior sales. Always something to do. I don't recommend if you want to stand around doing nothing. Have to work at Christmas time.

Not great

No progression bad wage, you can get a lot better wage elsewhere to be honest. Management are there for the wrong reasons, no help or support and don’t do anything

unhappy

felt unhappy dreaded going to work really boring and tedious. Management didn’t sort out holidays well or pay a lot of people where made to take unpaid holiday due to the lack of organisation

Pros

40% discount

Cons

boring

Relaxed workplace but too much so

If you want a very chilled temporary part time job, its fine. Although some of the management really dislike their jobs and will do nothing to help you out or take charge. You will be left on the tills on your own at peak times at Christmas because they don't want to pay for enough people to be rota'd on. But the benefits of them being relaxed is them being fine with you if you're ill and can't come in, with no dramatic "back to work" serious documents and conversations because you've been poorly for one shift (which some places are like). You can get away with doing the bare minimum but expect the bare minimum from them, no matter the effort you give.

Pros

High turnover - always new people/you're never the only newbie

Cons

very little training - they leave you to it

Ok for students

Ok job for students. Not really much room for progression unless managers like you. Always lots of over time available. Sometimes can be on the rota without being told

Avoid like the plague!

If you would like to keep your sanity then please stay as far away from River Island as you can! Micromanager colleagues, management constantly being caught slagging off their employees and turnover is through the roof. Pay is nowhere near decent for the work you are put through and I wouldn’t recommend this job to my worst enemy

Not a great experience

Rubbish management. It was a poor experience working there and would expect a lot better for a renowned high street brand. Training was none-existent and managers expected other staff members to help and train new-starters. I would never work here again.

meh

I am constantly being pressured into overtime, i’ve worked every weekend for years they won’t let me change my shifts there is no flexibility at all, the amounts of core memories i’ve missed because i was working here is embarrassing, this isn’t really the mangers fault you just have to try and find someone to cover you shift however no one ever does. it’s not awful just annoying. You do get 40% of clothing which is good if you have that style every so often usually every season you get an allowance to get free clothes. The mangers/ coworkers generally are really friendly one of the only things keeping me there. The hours range but once you pick them from the beginning it’s hard to change them

Productive and fun workplace

It can be a busy or slow day, depending on holiday events/ occasions. Generally it is a nice place to work. Hardest part of the job is Christmas & New Year times.

Pros

Free clothes as uniform & discount

Cons

Stairs

Horrible and depressing

I would not recommend this employer to anyone. I had a lesser than satisfactory experience during my time there & Im glad I left & put the whole thing behind me.

Management is shocking, humiliating

I got fed up of customers complaining about the way the store manager was speaking to fellow colleagues. I do not wish to be a part of this management style.

It was ok

I was there a short time but was made welcome by the team. The training was ok I didn’t enjoy the strictness of the store but other than that it was good

Not good

Management are bullies, have no respect for you and don’t consider work life balance.very cliquey.Expect so much from you from a 4 hour shift (e.g. 200 email receipts) Overall not a nice place to work

Pros

Staff discount and uniform allowance

Cons

Low pay, not enough hours, repetitive, no chance of progression, no respect from management, cliquey

Great place to work loved every minute

Working out of Trafford Park delivering stock to all River Island stores between Crewe and Dumfries. Hardest part of the job getting up at 3-30am.All the River Island delivery's were a pleasure to make.

No training as a temp

I was a seasonal Christmas temp and was literally shoved in the fitting room with zero training. I would stand for 8 hours a day just in the fitting room and no other employees talked to me.

Good in the beginning then become stressful

Used to love working here but after COVID, a lot of changes were made. Making it more difficult and much more of a stressful environment. Personally wouldn’t recommend

Pros

Staff discount

Cons

Expected to do a lot more work

Good for Temporary contract

Very friendly staffs they were mostly helpful when I asked for help but the management and professionalism wasn’t the best though. The interview was also very easy (not formal face to face).

Pros

Easy and fun place to work

Cons

Little pay
