The Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) is the charity that saves lives at sea. Volunteers make up 95% of our workforce – ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Our people are selfless, dependable, trustworthy and courageous. These are our values and they underpin everything we do.

Since our inception in 1824, demand for our lifesaving services has evolved significantly. We provide a 24-hour search and rescue service from 236 lifeboat stations around the United Kingdom (UK) and Republic of Ireland (RoI), including four along the River Thames and four inland lifeboat stations.

In addition, we operate a seasonal lifeguard service on more than 180 UK and Channel Island beaches and a specialist Flood Rescue Team ready to respond to severe flooding situations throughout the UK, RoI and around the world.

Our sea and beach safety work is paramount and we are sharing our maritime expertise with like-minded international organisations to help save even more lives from drowning.

With 98% of our total income coming from generous donations and legacies, we depend on our dedicated volunteers, supporters and staff to continue saving lives at sea.

Lifeboat Station Visits Guide in Shoreham by Sea

Fantastic place and organisation to work for
Absolutely fantastic job, team atmosphere and very important job - saving lives at sea. Every day is different. As these are unpaid volunteer roles there is no salary but its a charity after all and the people and role make up for that. It's a amazing place to work and the all inclusive team (one crew) ethos is fabulous. I can highly recommend this organisation.

Terrible to work for.
The organisation has totally lost its way since new slt. Core values gone and run like a corporate machine. A very 2 tier system and management is awful. Money continually wasted. Cuts and more cuts when slt on huge salaries while spiting the 1 crew nonsense. Would never seek employment cannot wait to leave this organisation.

Don't let the TV program fool you
The RNLI is a fantastic charity on the basis of what it is there for. But the current senior management are slowly dragging it to the ground and have completely lost focus of its core values. If the public knew where their money really went, they would be shocked. An ageing engineering fleet with no proper expenditure will eventually lead to a serious consequence.
