Insights into Royal Mail
What people like

- Fair pay for job
Areas for improvement
- Support from manager
- Sense of belonging
- Ability to learn new things
disrespectfull and unfriendly staff
Postwomen (Current Employee) - Milton Keynes - 17 May 2022
Typical day is fast paced, no one seems to help each other out or respect each other, it's supposed to be a team effort in the mornings, but rarely seems to be, management don't have any people skills and don't deal with matters in a professional manner, they just get swept under the carpet and ignored. Its a job and pays the bills, that's it, very little job satisfaction, unfriendly place to work with lots of derogatory comments. Vehicles are a disgrace with being very tatty and not looked after. I would never recommend this job to anyone.
Pros
Early days
Cons
Unfriendly back stabbing staff and management

You either love it or hate it
Post person (Former Employee) - Derby, Derbyshire - 13 May 2022
It’s either for you or it’s not. Very physically demanding job, pays very well, always overtime. Managers expect you to be able to do overtime everyday.

Lovely people, chaos in van, parcels everywhere
Driver/delivery person (Former Employee) - Newport - 13 May 2022
A great way to beat cabin fever as you're out and about delivering parcels. After a 2-4hr walking route though the following parcel rounds get old fast. I worked 30 days in a row without a break when i first started for them. People try to crash into you for the insurance so beware at roundabouts....honestly, i see dumb people everywhere...never mind I have a child relying on me, and that loves me more than anyone in the world...crash into her so we don't have to move our lazy backsides...yeah, very, very stressful.
Pros
Goodish money
Cons
Exhausting

Not for me personally.
Postman (Former Employee) - South West - 10 May 2022
Too much ,too stressful and physically demanding. To think you walk nearly 65 miles over 5 days is shocking. Not enough recovery time for me. Think about your long term physical and mental health. It got boring fast ,and hated it. 2 days training and basically left.

Not a Genuine Opportunity
Mail Sorter (Former Employee) - Inverness - 9 May 2022
I was employed via a subsidiary of Royal Mail known as Angard staffing. You will be promised regular hours (I applied based on an advert for full time work, my colleagues who had applied at the same time believed the same) but essentially it was zero hours. You would be allocated, for example, a shift every day for the next five days, then on each the day you would receive a text to tell you the shift was cancelled. They would offer completely unsuitable and random hours with no guarantee that if you accepted they wouldn't be cancelled. The advertised pay rates seemed great for the time and were based on the shift times and time served, however with the exception of busy times like christmas you will never get enough hours to earn decent money. Also, if I remember correctly, if you didn’t work enough hours in a certain period of time it would effectively reset your pay to that of a new start. Allegedly you could progress to being a fully contacted member of Royal Mail staff however there were so many get-out clauses with this, effectively you will never be able to work enough hours through Angard to be eligible. No training was given and I had absolutely no idea what I was doing, especially with the ‘frame’ you use for sorting letters that was arranged in a seemingly random way that nobody could explain to me. There was also a lot of heavy lifting of sacks and parcels but I received absolutely zero health and safety training. I had no idea who the managers were or even what their names were and received no thanks for any of the shifts I did despite the physically demanding -
Pros
There were no pros.
Cons
Physically demanding, random & unsuitable hours, no stability or guarantees, no communication, no management, no training, everything about Angard including their texts & phone line.

Great fun place to work
Worker (Current Employee) - Glasgow - 9 May 2022
Amazing place to work with great pay! I worked for minimum age at the beginning but once your 12 weeks are done your pay goes up to £12.50 an hour and then continues to go up every 20 weeks!

Can be okay when out office
Postman/Driver (Current Employee) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire - 8 May 2022
When working for royal mail it feels like the mangers are against you also the workload and what they expect is unreasonable but as they are so short of staff can't afford to lose staff

Fair working environment
Covid 19 test collection driver (Former Employee) - Northampton - 8 May 2022
Worked for RM for two years, all staff treated with respect and given their dignity, most employers could learn a lot from them. Most staff very happy overall, fair salary mainly due to a strong union, same salaries offered to temps.
Pros
Very relaxed fair minded management
Cons
None

Face paced but enjoyable
Christmas Casual Mail Sorter (Former Employee) - Teams, Tyne and Wear - 7 May 2022
Enjoyed working for Royal Mail. Quite fast paced but ok, hard to get a full time position through Royal Mail themselves as a lot is agency working.

Good salary
Post Person (Former Employee) - Kilburn, Greater London - 7 May 2022
Great salary and weekly pay, hours etc…. Downfall is management and workload it’s ridiculous at times … management will send you out alone with 2/3 peoples worth of post and then complain that you can’t complete it and expect you to do overtime…. Management only care about their bonus
Pros
Money
Cons
Workload and management

Not fun anymore
Postman/Driver (Former Employee) - Liverpool - 5 May 2022
I started a Royal Mail 30 years ago so it’s difficult to remember my interview experience but what I would like to say is when I started it was all about the customer sadly today it is not so a company I was very proud to work for in the end I couldn’t wait to get away 😔

Easy going low stress job
Postman (Current Employee) - Waterlooville, Hampshire - 2 May 2022
Low stress job with good hours,I'm home by 1 or 2 every day so have time to work on other things. Happy with this job for short term but have no plans to stay long term due to lack of career advancement, and lack of challenge. Majority of the people are good to work with and managers are easy going.
