managers expect you to come in early. then don't pay you the next day if you go over. trying to finish on your time is a nightmare, they don't care you have other commitments outside of work then they start threatening you with wilful delay which I don't even actually think it's a thing

Awful company

Worked for Royal Mail for 38 years and did the bare minimum, managers are a shambles who don’t know what there doing so I could do what I liked when I liked😁

pretty much what you expect from being a postman. pay's okay, you're left to get on with it after sorting the mail in the morning. management can be a pain.

Easy job

Easy work but managers put a lot of pressure on you to perform overtime Impossible to get a full time contract - you’ll be on 30 hours but be expected to work atleast 40

Can be heavy bags on certain days, from September leading up to Xmas it's crazy, Loads of new build housing estates just get added on to your rounds

Highly dependent on where you work

Your enjoyment is highly dependent on what office you join, as every office has a different culture, shift patterns, management style etc.Generally speaking the job is easy to grasp, quieter summers and really heavy in the winter as you'd expect. Offices are run on a seniorty basis, so a new starter will most probably be allocated holiday dates last, so good luck getting kids holidays off. You will also most likely be a reserve, meaning you day off week to week will be randomly assigned based on necessity. Could be between 6 months and 10 years before you get offered a full time duty. Again, everything is 100% dependent on what office you join, and there's no way of knowing what to expect beforehand unless you know someone working there. You may have the most miserable years of your life working as a postman or the best, and the difference could be you're 1 mile apart.

Good on van route delivery

Van routes were good to do on the rural routes of delivery and doing the post box and post office collection in the evenings over time available and parcel delivery

People generally nice but management can be a nightmare and the company don’t care about their staff and not very accommodating when you have any personal problems

Not what is was

In a area working around up to 100 people, with 100 different personalities, so the usual good, the bad and the ugly.Sort your mail and parcels in the depot before leaving for delivery. Walks not even, not even close in a lot of cases, course you'll never have exactly even but...Things getting worse, majorly understaffed, backlog with walks (some not going out for days), tracked parcels priority over mail.Depending what walk you're on, getting out the depot to deliver should be your happy time.


finish times, decent pay for what you do atm, once out the depot you just get on with it


big disparage in walks some a lot bigger than others, stupid decisions being made by higher management, understaffed leading to pressure in depots with walks not going out, a lot worse now than 5yrs ago

Fast-paced but friendly work place.

In enjoyed working for Royal Mail. The working environment was fast-paced and pressurised but my colleagues were all friendly and helpful. I would definitely recommend.

Physically demanding

Great if you like being outdoors in all weathers but walking 8-12 miles a day takes it’s toll on your body. Had its good and bad points like most jobs, colleagues and managers are all decent down to earth people.

Seriously DO NOT think of working there

Overworked, under appreciated, defective software on PDAs, ignorant talentless managers, crazy inefficient working practices, extremely poor treatment of staff which causes widespread stress, workload now exceeds time allocated placing staff at risk of serious longterm injuries - musculo-skeletal and stress are commonplace, no compassion for any staff suffering mental/stress issues, CEO that makes ridiculous demands on staff, and their pay is obsceneThe enjoyable part of the job is when out on delivery and interaction with customers

Great teamwork but some management poor

Busy place to work and initially tiring until you get used to walking the routes.Good to be out in the fresh air once sorted and finish early enough to enjoy the rest of your day.Management sometimes poor though as they have favourites and never crack down on the terminally lazy.

No 2 days are the same some great people helpful and welcoming

Moving more toward parcels than mail delivery. Currently in dispute on terms and conditions changes. The company is going through some huge changes with new parcels hubs.

Ironically unorganized

Unorganized management. Not paid correctly on multiple occasions for overtime and generally quite a negative environment in the sorting office. Oh and 1 in every 6 Saturdays off, haha yeah sure

Good Place to Work

A good place to work, managers want their pound of flesh, but there is plenty of overtime available. New starters don't seem to last long. reasonable level of fitness a bonus

Staff are all good workers. Organisation and training is poor

The work is physically demanding and management are more concerned with achieving targets than staff health and welfare. There is virtually no training so you mostly learn on the fly which means more mistakes. It is a straight forward job and at the end of the day you can switch off until the next day. Managers work hard but there always seems to be an atmosphere of unrest.

Used to be fun, not anymore

Bullying management, no appreciation for hard work, low morale, everyone wants to leave, overworked. The company does not care about staff only profits for its shareholders and people at the top.

Poorly managed

Royal mail are not a proactive company. I have been there 6 months. Leave is to be booked a year in advance. Put on rounds solo that you've never done before. Training is minimal and very poor.

Good place to work in general

Royal Mail is a good place to work, the hours are good and overtime is regularly available. However the business is moving in a awkward direction where they are trying to mandate Sunday working and the overtime rate is appalling.
