Avoid unless you have no life

Would not recommend this company to work for, all they care about is money in the tills, they do not care about the staffs emotional and mental wellbeing at all.You will be expected to work long hours with very little breaks and the pay is shocking, having to sell sas is super hard work and if you don't sell enough you can be put under investigation.I now do a lot less and am been paid the same as when I was a member of management at savers, which may I add is one of the most stressful jobs I have ever done, you are constantly expected to do more and more, deadlines, targets and budgets have to be met always, you might aswel sleep there as you won't actually get to go home and see your family much. The only good thing I can say is there is always a good team spirit, but other than that it is a thankless job and only the big Big bosses get to reap the rewards for all your hardwork.

Long hours, shocking pay, rubbish company

If you enjoy working for a laughably low wage then go ahead

I have worked at savers for 3 years and as a team leader/supervisor for 1 year. Actual managers can be very nice and decent people. But anyone above them just simply don't care or have 1IQ. Hours will be dumped on you and they force you to work them. If you are a sales assistant hired in summer they will most likely fire you in winter when the hours drop. Everything is 10 years in the past. This place is a joke. The only reason I have stayed is because I'm in one of the better stores with a lovely team and customers. But I have worked in the bad stores and they suck so much.

Pros

Good team members

Cons

Laughable wage, awful management and overall company culture, uncertain hours/days off

Not bad

Fine place to work due to having nice management at my store currently, but have came across some horrendous managers in my years here.As a supervisor work life balance was fine for me but for the managers and assistant managers alot of hours are expected of them. The budget my store was given for hours to run the store was rubbish, literally bare minimum with barely enough staff throughout the day to get the jobs done. Also have to say the whole sas thing is a major annoyance, alot of items that are the same price as last week stuck at the front on "offer" and cashiers expected to sell a ridiculous amount of them to hit targets. You miss your store target for one day and you don't hear the end of it from the area manager.

Pros

Hours that I wanted Nice colleagues

Cons

SAS Managers hours Low budget of hours

If you love not seeing friends and family, this is the place for you.

Like all jobs, there are pro’s there are cons. But in the last 12 months a lot more cons. The management expect far to much from you, you can do everything that’s asked and more and it’s never recognised, but as soon as something minor appears they head straight down the formal proceedings. There is obvious favourites amongst some of the management team. Working 55 hours a week with no balance at all. Told to take time back in Lieu but never ever happens so not only under paid but not given the time back. The hours worked can sometimes mean your basically working under minimum wage, yet send out training making sure if cashiers are out 15 minutes late they are to be paid for it. But not management. No pay rise last year to make up for the loss in the pandemic, bonus has become near impossible to hit targets for now.

Pros

The team in store

Cons

No work/life balance

Stressful and bad management

Worked there for 4 years and had to leave due to high stress levels, constant high daily and weekly targets to meet. Had to work sunday being the only management so can not take a proper break, rota was always last minute and managment were unsupportive.

Great place to work

Absolutely amazing place to work, only left due to needing full time hours, the team I worked with was like a little family always there for each other no matter what.. management would always communicate what was happening weekly within the company. The management in the store I was in were Absolutely amazing! And I would go back in a heartbeat if I could!

Pros

Management team, discounts in superdrug

Cons

None!

dont apply if you are a parent

i was a supervisor for the havant store and i can honestly say it was the most demanding job both physically and mentally i have ever had, the work/ home balance is non existant and it doesn't matter if you are unable to arrange childcare and have given prior warning to this fact, you will be put on shifts they KNOW you are unable to cover and then disciplined for being unable to achieve, which leads me onto the work load you are expected to do the workload of multiple people while trying to get the managerial jobs done, if you don't achieve this you are yet again lead down the disciplinery route. This company has managers who have let power go to their heads and instead of leading in a positive manner they take great pride in disciplinery action for no good reason AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE

Cons

no breaks, long hard hours and unachievable targets

Lazy and unprofessional management

In my 32 years of working in retail I have never worked for such an unprofessional management team. Made to feel uncomfortable, nothing was ever good enough, no incentive for staff who felt intimidated, customers were spoken about as were the staff. A good range of stock but I’ll never step foot in that place again!

Pros

Good range of stock

Cons

Management!!

Supervisor

The company is great to work for, they transferred me from one store to another to benefit my work and home life, there is great job progression available if you want it and there is grear training opportunities. Your wage is fare. Overtime is always available and a good opportunity to learn new skills.

Pros

Bonus scheme

Cons

Not a great place to work

From my first shift at this store I did not like it here. The manager is very patronising and unfair, she will show you up in front of customers. The staff are on 12/16 hour contracts but are made to work 3/4 hour shifts 5/6 days a week, no flexibility for people with children.. the business comes first.

Pros

Pay ok

Cons

In 5/6 times a week coming in for 3 hour shifts

A culture of bullying in a budget store.

I guess the only good thing to say about working at Savers is you will have a good work-life balance because you won't get enough hours for it to interfere with your life. The job is banal, boring, repetitive and in the end erosive. You will either be serving on the till and trying to force feed perfumes e.t.c to customers (who just want to buy their shopping and leave), work behind the till is limited to tasks like facing up perfumes, security tagging more expensive products and other adhoc duties given by management, the till area is cramped and if customers have lots of shopping it is very awkward to pack. I found the customers the best thing, you get to know the regulars and can have at least some banter in an otherwise hostile environment. If you are not serving on the tills or you will be facing up the store and making sure everything is placed and in order, this may include replenishing shelves from drawers or putting deliveries out.During the recent pandemic there was no real attempt to limit the number of customers allowed in the store bearing in mind most are smaller outlets on the high street. There was also no provision in the beginning for hand sanitizer or disinfecting of baskets. I was aware that members of staff came into work whilst unwell, not testing or in full knowledge they had been in close contact with someone who had tested positive. As the pandemic went on things did improve for customers but not for employees who were put at risk by their co-workers. Finally onto management and the treatment of staff. The nature of the job is to be the best in your -

Productive work place, but can stressful at times.

Worked here as both a sales assistant and as a Supervisor. I’d say the work/social life balance is pretty decent. Others might disagree - it depends on how confident you are when it comes to putting your foot down, and saying enough is enough if your management keeps asking for overtime. However they can force you to do an extra percentage of your contracted hours. Example: If your contract is 16 hours, they can forcibly top it up to 20 hours that week. If you refuse to work it still then it could lead to a contract review. You only get a salary as assistant manager or store manager and above. Supervisor or anything below is paid by the hour, but generally a decent wage. And usually plenty of overtime. Im on a 16 hour contract and I’ve generally been working 30-35 hours in both my store and covering other stores. You may get asked to cover another local store within driving distance If you do own vehicle. In my own experience there are generally a lot of chances to advance in you position. I was taken on as Supervisor but in the area there are a lot of recruitments being advertised. So I could apply for assistant manager for example in another store if I wanted to.If you are hardworking and do the job correctly then job security is pretty much a given. I would say the bad thing about this company, and many similar companies is the active selling at the till. Being a supervisor I don’t have to commit as much to this as the sales assistants, but managing a team I do have to have some knowledge and approach to boost these sales within the store. You have to pretty much -

Pros

Salary for management, job advancement is a given, friendly staff/team members generally get along.

Cons

Poor Head Office management, pressure to hit targets, only 1 week paid bereavement leave.

Unfair treatment of staff

I had to stay late all of the time with no extra pay. The company swears it cannot pay overtime and still expects management to continue to work up to an hour after the store has closed. The price of the products attracts the worst type of customers, no support if offered when dealing with them. HQ has no idea what it's like on the shop floor and treats sales staff like they're lazy or stupid.

Pros

None that come to mind

Cons

Do not pay for full hours worked.

Do not work here

Managers way or no way was the stores policy, rota would get changed no notice, not enough staff so you are expected to do twice the work for same pay. Managers spy on you from the office via the cameras, often given short shifts even though short staffed, left to your own devices but buzz if need help. Not very team orientated as all part timers, so hard to keep team rapport. Most enjoyable part of this job was the day I said I was leaving,...after all we all try to better ourselves.

Pros

Cheap goods

Cons

Not enough team players

Review says it all

sell sell sell, to much emphasis on SAS (Savers Active Selling) I saw Sales Assistants getting chastised for not selling enough even when they ask customers constantly, and when they do achieve sales it's just taken for granted, there's no direct praise to them. Most cashiers have 4 hour shifts and spend the majority of time on the tills constantly being pushed to upsell.Delivery team put under constant pressure with not knowing how many cages the delivery is as estimate is hardly ever correct, having to work stock on shop floor when customers are in the store, trip hazards everywhere for customers. Supervisors put under pressure and constantly moaned at for tasks not always all being done, even when store was running understaffed. As a supervisor you are able to cash up at the end of the day or open the store, be a key holder and answer Alarm Calls if Alarm fault or activates. your also constantly reminded to push the sales assistants to upsell, you may be tasked to do pick lists and other job Management may decide you are capable to undertake. The culture is that majority of the staff aren't fully happy with how the store is and pretty much everyday someone has something bad to say.Be expected to be called in adhoc and for rotas to be changed with less than 24hrs notice so planning things around your shifts can be difficult.Staff turnover is pretty high and basically seems because staff feel beaten down by the amount of work and pressure. In my time with the company I saw 2 cashiers and 2 supervisors leave and now myself leave.Every shift you will feel as if you -

Dont waste your time

Constantly over worked, never allowed full breaks, management/area managers/hr do not care about you, Promised career progression - never get it! Extremely high turn over of staff Hours cut Budgets cut Pushed to sell certain items with no incentives apart from the possibility of maybe winning a prize (never happens) I was a supervisor, which meant key holder. Manager wont answer calls on days off or out of hours so if security call for alarms going off during the night the ring you until you answer. No call out money for this either.

The definition of depression

Underpaid, under appreciated, under staffed. If you like to be bullied then this is the perfect place for you! Manager continuously brags about cheating on his partner who I might add has just had their baby. The assistant manager is the most patronising, self absorbent, pig. Nothing but judgment and Bullying from her. Completely corrupt! Absolute joke of a place to work. If you want to be mentally strained and physically screwed then this is the place for you! AVOID PAIGNTON SAVERS

worse place i have ever worked

was only there for a few months, got payed 50p over minimum wage todo everything the manager should be doing. getting left for a full shift without a break as i couldn’t leave the store being the only management in the store. being put in for over time and never asked ( i have a two year old and needed to get childcare) the manager didn’t care as long as she didn’t work sundays. the assistant manager who didn’t have a clue on procedures trying to undermine staff who had been there for 15 plus years (longer than her) the list could go on forever.

Pros

nothing

Cons

everything
