Cool place to work

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
The National Railway Museum is a great place to work. The staff are incredibly kind and, although the work can be tiring, it's very rewarding to see the museum clean, tidy, and ready for visitors. The pay rate is only slightly above minimum wage but it's certainly nothing to scoff at, especially with all the amazing benefits you get as a staff member (private health and dental, staff discounts, free exhibition entry to name a few).

Great fun, very hard work, lots of variety

No typical day at work. Being the sort of person I am I got involved in as much of the organisation's activities as I could. I learned huge amounts about PR, Fundraising and Development, event planning, management and delivery, customer service and exhibition design. The management was a bit variable. I was lucky to work with some very talented managers, but elsewhere in the organisation in some senior positions there were some highly flawed individuals. Most of my co-workers were excellent people, there were some notable exceptions, however, and these individuals were carefully managed to reduce their influence and the potential damage they could do. The hardest part of my job involved working with some difficult co-workers so I learned some useful management skills in that respect. The most enjoyable part of my job was the variety and daily thrill of new challenges and working with a great team.

Pros

Good progression, enjoyable, rewarding work.

Cons

Idiosyncratic senior management, constant restructuring.

Interesting place to work

A typical day at work is always busy with everything having to be time managed. I have learned how to manage under pressure and work as a team. The management is very supportive and understanding of what actually is needed to be done and what that can physically entail through out the day. I work in a small time where we can all rely on each other for support. The hardest part of the job is definitely the physical side of things and the most enjoyable being when everything comes together and we achieve our goals.

Pros

Great location to work in

Cons

Early starts and working weekends

Fun workplace, great colleagues, just no chance of advancement

- Uniform is provided except white shirt, black trousers and black shoes. - You're in charge of your own clocking in and out, and signing up for shifts for the following week. You also get paid weekly. - The people that work there are pretty nice, really friendly and you tend to get to know your co-workers well. - Hardest part of the job is the long hours and most of the time (especially in dinner season) you don't get many hours between shifts. - Most enjoyable part of the job is definitely the people you work with It's like any other catering job, the managers are all nice, fair people that you can have a laugh with. My reason for leaving is that there was just no place to move up into. I learned a lot, the training is pretty good (I can make a mean latte), and again, the people that work there are amazing, there was just no progress. The pay's alright, especially for 18-21 year olds!

Pros

Free lunches, flexible hours, get paid weekly

Cons

Long hours, no way of going up in the world

Short time but Good experience.

My job at science museum in London was a very good experience towards my laboral life. I learned to work as a team and respect the orders my bosses gave me. They loved me there and wanted me to work more hours every day, but at the time I was studying and university did not give me that versatility, therefore i had to leave.

Pros

good team coordination, nice environment

Cons

timetable, location.

Exciting, visitor centred environment

Typical day would consist of opening up the Museum, ensuring all work stations are clean an dpresentable. Manage the main recepion desk, answer calls from both inside and outside customers, man the switchboard, upsell exhibitions and products, cover museum shop when busy, meet and greet visitors, conference clients and sales reps, man the car park, highlight any health and safety issues, patrol museum as part of general invigilation of galleries and to be a security presence. Advise visitors of other areas around Manchester and general tourist information. Generate donations from visitors. Cash up till points at end of day. Close down galleries ensuring all visitors have left the premises and secure the site.

Pros

meet interesting people each day, each day is different

Cons

none

Great venue to work in

The events team are lovely and there are plenty of perks to the job. However these are slightly over shadowed by the lack of progression and pay given the venue is a charity.

Great place to work

Day at work starts with making sure that all cafe points are supplied with all bakery and pastry items. Then we start with all production mise an place for a day and days ahead.I'm learning every day because industry is changing everyday with clients needs.Managemant is supportive and fair.As part of team is really important to work as one with workmates. The hardest part of work is and in the same time most enjoyable is to work in time pressure situations and sense of pride after hard day at work.

Pros

free uniform and lunches

Cons

sometimes long hours
