Scottish Prison Service Employee Review

Great benefits!

Great benefits in relation to pensions and holidays etc. organisation has lost its way, no direction and lack of decision making, contributing to a poor working environment. They need to apply their own ethics in dealing with staff, and they may retain them. Making it a place people want to work.

Won't recommend for a black or coloured person over the age of 25...cause growth is slow there.

The job in the prison is basic and simple but they made it hard, scary and intimidating. That's why they have high staff turnover, they need staffs yet they relief people of thier jobs for a basic and easy job function as working in the prison is something I will never understand.

Pros

The college

Cons

Very pretentious staffs and managers, 8when there's little issues it's when you realise how fast they want to get rid of you.

Same location

basic training and poor mentoring of new staff

Following a 6 weeks course at the SPS college you are returned to the establishment you will work at. You have the basic knowledge of the role but are then at the mercy of the more experienced staff to learn the individual posts. Some staff are very helpful but most resent the fact they have to assist new starts with learning the different posts and their role. Management seem to only value staff who are prepared to constantly work every shift going including working double shifts and rest days!

Pros

Job security

Cons

Long hours, very poor shift patterns for Operational Officers.

Toxic

Poor toxic work environment, Senior management more interested in the happiness of prisoners than the safety of their staff. FLMs more interested in impressing young attractive staff than doing their job properly. Anyone who speaks out against the wrongdoing is branded a troublemaker and gotten rid of. Typical day at work from start to finish usually involves dealing with and sorting out false promises that the inexperienced cowardly staff make and leave the confident staff to deal with. Only enjoyable part of the job is some of the good staff you meet. Nepotism is rife, with promotion favoured to those related through marriage, family or relationships, If you are a strong confident and intelligent member of staff who is not afraid to speak up, then management will be out to get you.
