Great as a sales assistant, terrible as a supervisor
Retail Supervisor (Former Employee) - Swinton, Greater Manchester - 21 May 2022
Indeed featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedIf you do work for screwfix stick to part time. Once you move up to a management role you are shipped to a different branch, which means you will have no free time and whoever does the rotas makes sure they and (usually the lazy workers) are all nice and cushie but you will have to work unsociable hours and get told its because of the needs of the business. Oh and its only a pound more to be supervisor than to be sales assistant and it doesn't make up for the abuse you get from customers nor does it make up for being used like a door mat. Oh you also lose any benefits screwfix (rarely) give to sales assistants. All for an extra pound an hour. Do not progress.

Fun workplace
Trade Retail Assistant (Current Employee) - London - 20 May 2022
The company can be quite stressful to work for sometimes. However, the pay is good and job security is guaranteed. Management can be mixed at times as some of the managers are not the best.
Pros
Job security
Cons
Management is mixed

Insights into Screwfix
Areas for improvement
- Sense of belonging
- Energising work tasks
- Trust in colleagues
Its one job for everyone there
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Rochester - 19 May 2022
It took me a few months to fully grasp people's seniority within the store due to everyone working equally as a team. There was no feeling of being looked down upon as managers worked closely alongside sales assistants in daily tasks and store targets.

Under staffed and under payed
I originally joined Screwfix as a service assistant and, after completing (Current Employee) - Swansea, Swansea - 19 May 2022
Company slowly cutting more and more hours. End up having to do the work of 3 people. No overtime available with the already low pay makes it a struggle.

Management
Retail Assistant (Former Employee) - Herne Bay - 17 May 2022
Childish, lazy, inexperienced and trivial management. No positive communications - they just complain about everything. Expected to do all the work so they can do as little as possible. Not a career as they make out on the advertising. The job is incredibly boring and monotonous with no sense of achievement. Each day you do your best just waiting to be taken into the office to be accused of something that is so pathetic it is almost laughable (everyone makes tiny mistakes every day - the managers and supervisors cover up theirs - they then have the cheek to dish out written warnings as a badge of honour).

Where work colleagues become family
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Romford - 13 May 2022
Spent nearly 5 years at Screwfix and learned a lot. You get to know your regular customers and build relationships. Only reason I left is because I never progressed. I would go back to Screwfix for a promotion
Pros
All round great place
Cons
Can’t work over time

Good company
Supervisor (Former Employee) - Luton - 11 May 2022
Not a bad job at all, good, friendly staff and customers. Fair pay, good holiday allowance, secure. Always busy, would recommend to friends and would work here again.
Pros
Good breaks throughout day
Cons
Long opening hours

Fast-paced
Sales Assistant (Current Employee) - Chorley - 11 May 2022
A typical day at work would be serving lots and lots of customers, many rude ones, many who don't have a clue what they want or need. Just being able to adapt to various situations is key in this place. A good knowledge of DIY is a plus, but some customers can ask you the most random questions about a very specific job, that no one else has EVER done! They then get upset that you don't know... The management have been great, always do their best to help in every situation. Some good colleagues who make the days better and time go quicker. Some colleagues can be lazy and do the bare minimum but it can be like that at any job. The hardest part of the job is the customers. The most enjoyable part of the job is having a good laugh with colleagues.

Not the best not the worst but I couldn't get out of there quick enough. Managers always give their favourites the decent shifts everyone else gets shafted to the max

Hard work but great managers
Customer Service Assistant (Former Employee) - Wellingborough, Northamptonshire - 8 May 2022
I worked at a new store from fitting to opening. It was very hard work but there was a real team atmosphere and our manager was great. Training is very good and there are chances to progress all the way should you wish to.
Pros
Rewards for hitting targets
Cons
Physical work and dirty at times

Don't work here unless you want to be overworked to the point of being unwell
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Bristol - 8 May 2022
They don't care about staff and refuse to hire adequately because" BOohoo shareholder bonuses". One person is expected to do the work of three people, whilst footfall is higher than ever and there's never enough staff on shift yet expected to do EVERYTHING. Sales targets are ridiculous and are expected to push ridiculous sales numbers as are penalised if we don't (we can't FORCE people to buy stuff they dont need during the worst inflation in years?!?) Performative wellness is a big thing in the company too, as they pretend to care about mental health until you have an actual crisis and then it's mostly ignored. Very clichey environment and gossiping constantly, way too much favouritism where people who've worked there years get to focus on delivery/PIs whilst everyone has to serve customers.
Pros
Good luck finding any.
Cons
Long shifts Rude customers Lazy management Favouritism High staff turnover

Hours are random
Store Assistant (Current Employee) - Rhyl - 4 May 2022
I’ve had no advancements of contract even after 9months of service due to higher ups cutting hours to save money. This is really unfair on smaller contract people as I’m stuck on 16 hours.
Pros
Discount for store and company group.
Cons
Random days. Won’t give set hours. Lazy management.

Awful Place To Work.
Customer Assistant (Former Employee) - Barnstaple, Devon - 3 May 2022
Did not enjoy my experience at Barnstaple screwfix. Manager sat on his phone most of the time and was not professional at all. People who worked there for a long time got away with everything and never had disciplinary. They’ll hire you on a part time contract with low hours then make you work 35+ hours a week. But come wanting holiday you’re only payed part time. Nobody cleaned up after themselves not even simply wiping down a till.

Stable career
Assistant Manager (Former Employee) - United Kingdom - 3 May 2022
Stable career due to industry type, every other weekend off and competitive pay. Closed Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. Lots of regular customers that make the job enjoyable.

Productive and fun place to work
Picker (Former Employee) - Lichfield, Staffordshire - 30 April 2022
It's OK place to work, no one chasing you if you do your job properly. It's a heavy liftinf. Easy to damage your back tho and very cold in winters. Some items are wet and you end up freezing to death

Fun work place, team I had in my store were amazing
Retail Assistant (Current Employee) - Cornwall - 27 April 2022
Highly recommended working here, management are chill and everything is easy to pick up and learn. First day is always set out to do the essential training but after that it's all good to go.

Ups and downs
Customer Service Advisor (Former Employee) - Burgess Hill, West Sussex - 26 April 2022
The work itself is easy, either out the back bringing in delivery, stocking shelves, picking orders or serving customers. However the managers clearly have favourites, they will sometimes talk to them (not work related) and expect everyone else to do the work. The shifts are extremely irregular and they say they're very flexible but will complain when you ask to change shifts (you only get 4 weeks notice of shifts). The supervisors and other staff are lovely (so are the managers but they do have their favourites!) and it is a safe place to work. I wouldn't say it's a bad place to work but I wouldn't rush to apply.
