Customer Service Assistant/Cashier (Current Employee) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire - 11 August 2023
Management at store are bullies, no support offered at all. Company has no ethics anymore, was at the store when it opened, changed so much, you are not even a number, no care given to staff at all. Horrible company to work for.

No stock and management is bad.
HGV Class 2 HIAB Driver (Former Employee) - Wolverhampton - 3 August 2023
The work is fine delivering once out. But to work with people who are brain challenged and have a very close clique and stab each other in the back. Management just want to get rid of you, if your not following procedure. Management can’t organise properly. Their motto is Selco have got the products but in fact have to keep running around other stores to collect materials.
Pros
Good work life balance
Cons
Clique people and back stabbers and bad management

Good staff in depot
Cons
SMT only interested in themselves and bettering there careers

Over worked and underpaid
Trade Sales Assisstant (Former Employee) - Poole - 19 May 2023
Was really excited to work at selco. I was part of an original team that built and opened a brand new store in the south of England, which was very exciting. The hours were long and the pay was average, but that wasn't an issue at the time. I then moved round a couple of older branches and realised very quickly that progression wasn't an option. The company was more interested in hiring externally, so i ended up with multiple managers who didn't know anything about the company, procedures, or the products sold. Upon one of the supervisors abruptly leaving the company, I was asked to step up as a temporary supervisor with the promise of benefits and with a new apartment and pets to pay for I thought 'great!' but nothing ever came of it, so after a year with nothing to show for my efforts, i left! Work/life balance has been better ever since!
Pros
Discount on building supplies
Cons
Long hours, lack of management, no incentives

Kind to your face, different story if you leave
Shop Floor Assistant (Former Employee) - Cardiff, Cardiff - 15 May 2023
Store, deputy and transport manager haven’t got a brain cell between them to organise daily deliveries, often you’d be delivering next door to where your colleague would be delivering. The attitude from the deputy and store manager is poor, they talk about mental health awareness etc but try and work you into the ground. The transport manager has never been in a driving role so delivery locations were all over the place rather than split into organised sections then shared between the drivers. No amount of work was good enough, and you were always made to feel like you needed to do more/made to feel guilty for having a day off even though we’d be working with 50% of a workforce due to ‘sickness’. Going back to the attitude from management, your hard work would never been acknowledged but critiqued, we’re told that the drivers decision is final but that’s thrown to the wind when it’s something to do with their favourite customers with drivers being spoken down to because they don’t want to risk damaging both company and customer property trying to fit into tight places. Customers would swear and belittle staff with a manager present without and form of defence or support for the staff. So in short, if you want to work with a great bunch of people, then it’s a good place to work. And if you want to be promised a bonus over and over and no receive one, but have those lies covered with a few slices of pizza then it’s also the place to be.
Pros
Good staff that aren’t management
Cons
Management, management & management

Avoid like the plague
General Operative (Former Employee) - Nottingham, Nottinghamshire - 26 April 2023
Worst possible place to work, don't do it. Hours and pay are a joke, no leadership or training at all. They've never heard of health and safety. I wouldn't recommend this place to my worst enemy.

I met great people
Trade desk sales assistant (Former Employee) - Essex - 19 April 2023
My time working for Selco I met some friends for life. You work with great people but for what you did and the stress it can be, you do feel under paid. That was the reason I left.

Talking too much, doing too little
Sales Assistant (Former Employee) - Southampton - 8 April 2023
Attempts to give off an air of a great workplace, and it could be under the correct leadership, but in my case the leadership was found wanting. You will be on a shift rotation, and if you want to change you have to find someone to swap with. However, you will be forced to work some shifts, even if you can find people to swap. This seems arbitrary.
Pros
Ride to work scheme, working with contractors is typically painless
Cons
Rigid shift structure, nepotism, exceptionally low pay
