Great colleagues but terrible management

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
As stated in the summary, the team was great and I genuinely made some good friends. The job per sé was simple, but the hours were terrible and there was no communication between management. As a consequence, running the shop floor was always chaotic.

Great Company, no career progression opportunities

Great company to work for, will meet all sort of people. Great great training program. However there is no no career progression opportunities. Loads opportunities to earn if you sale and build a good client base.

No work life balance

If you want to waist your young life , Selfridges is the location. Untill you have your lunch, you will spend half an hour to get your food from locer and put your staff back when you need to go on shopfloor.Time waisting is biggest turn off.

Pros

Unpaid lunches

Cons

Ling long hours, with same payment as normal hours. Overstay with no extra pay

A nice place to work

Lots of training/gifted products. Discount is also a bonus. Commission is okay? Staff are generally friendly, and I’ve made some good friends within my team. Not much room for progression, especially if you’re part time. Long hours which are physically and mentally exhausting, especially when the majority of customers are rude and make work life depressing. However, overall it’s a nice place to work with lots of perks. I’m

Great place to work at

The staff members are very friendly. The managers are quite supportive especially if you have only recently started. I would highly recommend working there.

Good place to work

Pay and benefits are great, team is easy to work with, management however could have been improved a lot more by increasing transparency and competence

Ok but not the best

My time working at Selfridges was okay, but it wasn't the best. Overall, I would say that I had a satisfactory experience. I enjoyed working with my colleagues, and I appreciated the opportunity to work in a well-known and respected retail store. However, there were some downsides as well. For example, the workload could be quite heavy at times, and there were occasions when I felt that my efforts were not fully appreciated. Additionally, the pay was not as high as I would have liked.

Fun and Fast

one of the best jobs to get whilst you wait for university or whilst at university. Staff are so lovely and discount is soo good. Management was hit or miss but my department was good

Its great!

The team members are great and helpful. It's a relaxed environment most of the time but it can get busy. I feel supported by my colleagues and my manager. I can be myself in this environment and thrive.

Pros

food places nearby, product discount, opporunity to progress

Cons

weekends, rotational shifts

OK part time work

Ok job for part time work during studies. Floor teams are great as is management. Good food prices in staff canteen (joint with M&S) so don't have to go out for lunch

Good Salary but unprofessional management team

The management team were unorganised and unprofessional.A lot of the management team ( on womenswear) came across as very snobby and rude at times.Which made me feel really uncomfortable working in this type of environment.

Pros

Good salary and commissions

Cons

Management team

Xmas temp

When working during the Christmas period be careful where they place you because I applied for the Food department but was put into the Christmas market. I initially perceived it to be indoor but it was outside in the cold and working in the cold weather was not ideal. The manager I had was nice and helpful and they gave me a drink(tea/coffee) from a company in the Christmas market towards the middle of the Christmas period. Also, they did also buy me a long sleeve to wear because of the freezing cold weather. I got paid £10:85 an hour. But they didn’t give me much discount as I was temp (only 20% off). You don’t have to do much as I just had to greet customers and sign them in, operate on tills and open the hut. A very frustrating thing about the company is that you have to go through a whole separate building to get a locker to leave your stuff in during your shift which is time consuming and sometimes they didn’t used to work. The colleagues I worked with were great too.

Pros

Pay for a seventeen year old.

Cons

Working outside for a whole month.

Great place to work

Nice staff, facilities, great canteen with food supplies so you never really have to buy lunch or go anywhere else. It's all free. Managers are very relaxed. Good atmosphere and nice and clean back of house. You can see how well they treat there customers but they treat there staff the same and everyone is well looked after which is a joy to see in retail and it's not very often that happens. There's even a wellness room so staff can go somewhere really quiet to take a nap etc. I was only a temp but I would gladly come back if they ever the opportunity arised.

Good name to have on your cv

I worked at the flagship store in Birmingham, which immediately got me a job in London. It's a good career move. I also went back to Selfridges a few years later and although nobody would provide me with references, they still gave me a job on the day of the interview because I had already worked for them.

Pros

Luxurious place to work in

Cons

Can be quiet and boring and they expect you to meet ridiculous targets when they have no customers, who can afford the stuff

Fun workplace, good benefits

Lovely people. Amazing work environment, the hours are good and the pay is good. Amazing management, really wish I could stay in longer but unfortunately was only employed as Christmas temp
