Great team, unfortunately no work life balance

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Try it for yourself if the company and role appeals, overall great team and lovely location. However, the general consensus/reality is there’s no work life balance! Be careful as on paper you might work 45hrs that “week” (Mon-sun) but this may not be the hours you’ve worked between days off…that might be more like over 60hrs! Also, weekends off are rare and you will be expected to do 10, 11 and 12 hour shifts as standard. There’s a massive turnover of staff (likely due to work/life balance). Most of the “perks” only relate if you work in London so irrelevant if you work at Soho Farmhouse. It’s a great team, good pay and nice location if you are willing to sacrifice your life to work.

Only enjoyed working there because of the people

Like any hospitality job, hours are really harsh. The rotas would have illegal hours most of the time (48+ hours a week), you would get given 11-closing shifts with an hour unpaid break. The job is fine if you’re doing it short-term (eg gap year), other than that it’s pretty rough. The only reasons i enjoyed it were the other employees, they were so much fun to work with and the other benefits of working for Soho House (like the workshops, the festival) etc. Management were unprofessional and would promote staff to talk behind other people’s backs.

Pros

Festival, Workshops, Holiday pay

Cons

Highly demanding, no work-life balance

For a certain kind of person

Work involves long hours from early starts to late Finnish times 10pm. It is a extremely fast pass demanding job with extremely judgemental work environment. High staff turnover. If you are extremely thick skinned and love never ending stress and thrive in this kind of environment the. this is definitely the place for you.

Pros

Breakfast lunch and dinner provided/ Weekly pay

Cons

Long hours demanding guests not enough capacity for the amount of guests that arrive daily

stressful

if you're hoping for a real sense of community, you won't find it here. Workers aren't really friends with each other and don't talk outside of work. Managers and induction leaders kept emphasising that it was such a great place to work because you meet cool people and the starting salary is a little above average. The starting salary is 12.5 pph for a waiter. Of course, the idea is that with tips it goes up a little more, but soho house is so expensive the customers very rarely tip, as they assume that with the annual fee and high prices the staff are already well payed. Frankly, for a multi billion dollar corporation, they can do better, it's only like a pound more than whether-spoons salary. Furthermore, the workload is easily 10x more than a regular hospitality job, and far more stressful since the people who go there tend to be important (or at least view themselves as important), and there's thus very little tolerance of mistakes. When mistakes do happen, it's extremely stressful. Workers get blamed when customers leave without paying. Certain managers acted impatient and inconvenienced when new workers didn't immediately know the ropes or the particular quirks of that location. There were frequent technical issues with the machines they used to send through orders, which could at times make the service slower and anger the customers towards the waiters. There was also some confusion with the apps that they use to review payment, which nobody explained to us upon starting. The hours were not consistent and ppl were frequently sent home early or asked not to come. Some -

Pros

Cons

stressful, unpredictable hours, older staff rude to the newer ones

Great place to get experience

Nice team and management - everyone was really kind. It is also a great place to get experience and learn how the industry works. Hardest part of the job is the physical aspect and the long hours. Some shifts you did 12h shifts three days in a row. It is not a good life and work balance. But overall a good experience and nice people to work with.

Over worked, stressful environment

It started off great, the induction days were an efficient way of getting to know the place, you start off learning lots and being promised lots. However everything that we learnt and were told did not translate to the actual work place environment. As a runner nobody seems to care about you, you’re the bottom of the set and you’re definitely reminded that by the bartenders and the chefs. Management was awful, it was one rule for them and another for you. Unsociable hours, nobody would ever listen to you if you wanted a day off. You’d work a 10 hour shift and get only 30 minutes break. Overall would not recommend working here, there are some good opportunities but not if you’re working within the hospitality sector.

Average

A little less than average wages, terrible service charge. Good co-workers, dreadful treatment of staff from guests and members. Last minute shift changes, breaks very rare and sometimes not paid, understaffed. You can be given a week of long overtime and a week of hours cut back. Uniforms and laundering of uniforms not provided. Staff areas almost non-existent or utterly disgusting and badly kept. Overall I would advise against it.

Job Review: Dissatisfying Experience at XYZ CorpWorking at XYZ Corp has been a profoundly disappointing experience. From the outset, the company's promises of a supportive and dynamic work environment were nothing but smoke and mirrors. Instead, I found an organization plagued by inefficiency, mismanagement, and a complete lack of regard for its employees. The management at XYZ Corp exhibited a shocking level of incompetence, making critical decisions without proper understanding or consideration of their impact on the workforce. Communication was abysmal, leaving employees in the dark about changes that directly affected their roles and responsibilities. The lack of transparency fostered an atmosphere of mistrust and frustration.Furthermore, the work-life balance touted during the hiring process was nonexistent. Overtime was the norm, and requests for time off were met with resistance and disapproval.Ultimately, XYZ Corp's toxic culture and poor leadership drove me to seek opportunities elsewhere. I would caution anyone considering employment here to think twice before making the same mistake I did.

Amazing staff but bad members

Honestly the members ruined they are pretty horrible and vile to staff. I loved working there with the staff they were amazing and I felt supported and cared for with some good benefits.

14 hour shifts and no sick days.

Give your life to the company store and you might not want to leave. Why bother having a family when you can never see them again by working for these inexperienced managerial fools who could never do their or your job if their life depended on it. Apply now if you want to die.

Pros

Same staff food everyday

Cons

A lot

Toxic place

Its use to be a great company to work for . And now with bad senior management they just ruining the place . Work life balance is 0 even they preaching about it all the time . There is no support just demands from above . Always understaffed but they still try to cut the hours even further and squeeze out your last energy until you broke. Not recommended to work here.

Terrible

Long, difficult hours, managers are unhelpful and stand around on the phone all day, then blame servers for everything, guests don’t even acknowledge you. Just terrible.

Stressful place

Stressful and demanding. Salary is not enough. Management is consisting of lots of junior managers which don’t know what to do. 1 break of 40 min for 12/13 hours shift. Misleading advertising
