Good job, always plenty of overtime if you wanted it.

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
It's a good job, there's always plenty of overtime if you want it. Shifts are not at all flexible though and annual leave is frequently refused if other areas of the control room are short staffed.

Pros

Shift work

Cons

Target focused, Rota/Annual leave a nightmare.

Rewarding

Rewarding care giving job, extremely gruelling shifts poor pay will get to you after a while. Very hard to progress. You do get respect from public and uniform.

Pros

Uniform respect from public

Cons

Long shifts poor pay

Unsupportive unfair company to work with

Joke of a company, considering it is meant to be a caring company absolutely not. SCAS have a culture of treating people like a statistic and not an individual, And accountable for problems that they are not at fault for and treated unfairly. Do not work for them if you value your mental well being.

Pros

good salary

Cons

poor culture of unfairly treating their staff

Good pay but no brakes and long hours

The job itself is very exciting learning about new things on the phone everyday but it’s very demanding - for a 10 hour-10 and a half hour shift I only got a 30 minute brake, my TL was off so I had lack of support leading to me failing audits and getting a warning even though I had reached out for support but nobody was there to provide it unfortunately. Some staff are lovely and some who’s been there a long time do not seem open to change. It’s a straight forward job, easy to learn but so so demanding in brake aspects, long hours and phone call after phone call with the public stressing at the health advisors themselves on the clinical outcome

Pros

Education, pay

Cons

Brakes hours

Unhelpful and rude

Working at SCAS is awful. Next to no one helps you develop your skills. Workers step over you and will do anything to get ahead and make themselves noticed whilst making yourself look bad. The job itself is great but the ambulance crews are the worst people I've ever met in my life. People that have worked here years are still stuck in the same rank because the company won't let them get further in their career which reduces moral and many people leave because of this. Forget holidays as your be lucky to get 2 days in a row off. Tea breaks can be 30 mins in a 12 hour shift and doing this type of work you definitely need more.

Pros

Money not to bad

Cons

Too many to mention

Job satisfaction.

No two days are the same, fulfilling and worthwhile, great team, chance for promotion, but the money is not great. Good variety of work and fairly autonomous once probation is fulfilled. Many opportunities to move into different parts of the company.

Pros

Uniform provided, good training given, updated regularly. Varied shift pattern, giving opportunities for overtime or time for yourself.

Cons

Can be long hours and quite physically and emotionally demanding.

Exciting job, horrible company

I advise for all potential candidates please be warned that this is an exciting job where you will be treated by the public as a doormat and by the organisation as an amoeba who should be grateful to work in this thankless role. The best part of this job will be your colleagues who work by your side. It will be learning what it is like to be on the inside of the health service and the other end of the line in difficult situations. You will enjoy making a crucial difference to people's lives and helping the machinery of the service run correctly. You will not enjoy the lack of recognition and unprofessional management. You will not enjoy seeing how the trust is financially penalised for not reaching targets and that the target-driven environment becomes a snake eating its own tail. You will always be overworked and without the correct resources.During my time clinicians were in short supply, doubtlessly due to the way they were treated and valued, leading to non-clinical staff doing their best to not send unnecessary ambulances and tell the ailing public essentially that 'the computer says no' when privately outsourced out of hour GPs had no chance of meeting their targets. I stopped working there in 2018, long before covid. So thank you for clapping but sadly people have suffered for a long time due to our inability to correctly respond to a long standing public health crisis.Potential candidates please see this as an introductory role, a stepping stone (where you will be given no on the job resources or help to advance any NHS career) that gives a glimmer into life -

Pros

No corporate b.s with colleagues, down to earth environment, challenging, interesting and exciting

Cons

Heartbreaking insight to lacklustre system, bad management, lack of investment and retention of staff

Demanding, Demotivating

A very highly demanding workplace with little motivation. Responsibility is abdicated by policies and procedures forced electronically. There is a compromise between patient care and demand for performance numbers, ultimately it is performance management that prevails. Values and Principles are high on the agenda when looking from the outside in, this is much about appearance rather than real world. Progression seems to be secured based on length of service above skills and experience. Overall a disappointing 'call centre numbers game' in a world where patient care should prevail - those joining because they want to help make the world a better place will be challenged on a daily basis. Pay is barely above national minimum wage - hours are very long, nights, days, early mornings, late finishes, breaks monitored electronically and a high level of micro management.

Pros

Helping people in need

Cons

Long hours, poor pay

If you like working for a company not knowing if you are working tomorrow this is the job for you!

If your face fits you will get work given to you, but wo betied if you criticise the work ethic and the professionalism, with regard training it’s practically non existent, they rely on the experience of staff already trained by other companies with the knowledge to pass it on. The management is useless. But remember if you join this company don’t voice your opinion and you will get work.

Pros

Leaving

Cons

Avoid like a plague

I joined scas as I thought thats gonna be nice a nd stable employment - thats how it was advertised. But at the station it quickly turned out its a bunch of knobs treating me not like a crew mate but someone to compete with. No cooperation, no nice small talks, 12hr shifts spent closed in a box with people not saying a word to you and strongly showing their negative attitude towards nyself Worst place I have ever worked, never ever again

Pros

None

Cons

Too many to list

Hard work rewarding at times no work life balance

People look at the ambulance service as a glorified job.. on the tv you see the crews happy getting on.. in real life its not like that.. I got on with most the people I worked with but there were some that were to be honest with you bullys they hate bew starters . Can you imagine spending a 12 hr shift in a box where the person is miserable. The main of our work was going to people who couldn't be bothered to see a gp or take a paracetamol.

Productive and fulfilling

I have learned all forms of health care and disciplines. First aid and driving standards are a great skill to have in further jobs. Ambulance work is fast paced.

Why

The people are great but management have no people skills and are so stressed with not having enough resources caused by the government under funding it. It particularly amuses me that the governors continually keep asking why this or that has not happened when , to use an old proverb, you cant get blood out of a stone.
