Stressful but rewarding

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Officers are under a lot of pressure, have high workloads and constantly being dragged from pillar to post. Management are on your case all the time and there is a culture of shouty emails and telling off for falling behind (which is inevitable given the workload). The people in the organisation are incredible, and a credit to Policing.Uniform and kit is hard to come by, but of decent quality. Vehicles are of reasonable condition and fit for purpose. Double crewing policy is in place so safer and more sociable than some other forces.

Pros

Great people. Occasional satisfaction from the work completed.

Cons

Antisocial working hours, no work life balance, Management can be a bit oppressive (above inspector level), not enough officers, and dealing with utter grief every day

Productive and fun workpace

I thoroughly enjoyed my week there spending time in every department, and seeing how the police work behind the scenes. My favorite part about my time there was spending time in the courts.

Rewarding , interesting , Extremely busy

a somewhat Rewarding and simultaneously thankless job. plenty of opportunity to develop or branch out into other departments. shift working is tough for a work/life, family balance. patience is a given must, you need to be quite resilient and open minded. Bear in mind nobody dials 999 with good news . During one day you can expect to experience every emotion and on times it can be quite upsetting. long hours and shift work would not suit anybody with a busy social schedule. working as a team is paramount . can be very rewarding . The pay does not reflect on the pressurised workload, depending on the department .

Pros

brilliant Network opportunities

Cons

shift work, weekends

I thoroughly enjoyed my time within SWP carrying out a job which I loved and thrived on. Every day was a challenge. The team work ethic is amazing and I have met some amazing people whom I will class as best friends for life. Shift work and constant challenges inspired me.

Great work knowledge and skills

This is the perfect job to build your knowledge and work skills for future jobs. It will teach you about the laws, your customer service skills, how to handle difficult and hard situations. It will also teach you who you are as a person, to show compassion towards other people. It helps the community and it makes you feel you're doing something different.

active and rewarding

As a special constable the duties differ slightly to those of a regular officer. Variety of duties. No time to get bored as one day is never the same as another.

Pros

satisfaction

Cons

See below

Mostly a fun workplace with great camaraderie. However a very high pressure job where everyone carried huge workloads and appeared to receive little thanks from many victims as well as other agencies who were supposed to be working with us. We were also required to work overtime, sometimes 20 hour shifts without argument.

Pros

Good camaraderie, and job satisfaction when a good result acchieved.

Cons

Sometimes very long hours, lack of gratitude from some victims and outside agencies, massive work pressures and workloads.

Productive

This was a work experience back in 2011. It was a great experience and it gave me experience and background to how the police force works. The experience was took part over a course of 5 days, within those 5 days I was able to see everything a police officer had to do. I was able to try on equipment and see how heavy the uniform was.

Challenging job

Dealing with all aspects in the community. Team work was very important, as you are a public body and have to work together to resolve all issues in the community. Learnt a lot about different cultures and their standards. Hardest part I would say was not achieving your goals as there were some things which could not be resolved. Being part of a very large work force, facing new challenges and expectations, would probably be the most enjoyable and knowing that you made a difference.

Pros

Making a difference in the community

Cons

None

Really enjoyed my working life with South Wales Police

I have thoroughly enjoyed my work with South Wales Police for the past 40 years. I believe that I have given excellent service to South Wales Police. I was a career detective for almost 30 years having dealt with High Profile cases.I have worked with large teams of Officers and have been part of small teams when dealing with one off cases.

Pros

the enjoyment of being helpful to members of the public and giving them a good service.

Cons

i have worked long hours for little reward but helping the public was my first prioity

Fun and productive place.

This week of work experience was very good as i got to see an insight into the daily life of a police officer and the huge responsibilities that a police officer has to put up with.

Pros

team work abilities, work independantly
