Very fast paced and can be stressful

Indeed featured review

Loved working here you do need empathy for the job and also have to realise that not every client is the same if you have a calming nature and can deal with heavy loads of calls then this is the job for you

Pros

No weekend work

Cons

Mixed shifts no later than 8pm

Was good until the company decided to relocate call centre

Not accommodating to mums and part time hours. It was a nice place to work until the company decided to transfer its call centre up north. At which point they went on a purge, it was an awful experience for a lot of staff.

Work with poo get paid worse

Very low pay, Nepotism at high level. Everyone are busy to take care their managers not work. Big family network while recruiting or promoting. No any educated or experienced management on tops. Only best side is you can travel on company van without stress.

Pros

Free travel, away from manager

Cons

Standby, low pay, nepotism

Heavily manager led. Lots of work goes out to contract, if they offered a higher starting salary they wouldn't have such a employing crisis.

Great people and a guaranteed job, requires less management and more ground staff. There happy to pay contractors but not employ. They need to raise the starting wage of the staff they want to employ. If they do this more people will want to work there and will be happy to stay, a lot of staff are retiring and they will struggle to replace them.

Pros

Pension, work life balance, sick pay, guaranteed work. Great staff.

Cons

Minimal staff, workload is ever increasing but n9t all being completed, work having to go to contract, staffing levels, morale is low.

A family feel and full of life

Good work/home life balance and plenty of opportunity to progress. Place that embraces people from all walks of life which allows you to learn every day.

Pros

Great place to work where the individual is valued

Cons

The company relies on grant from Ofwat and if cuts in this, then leads to reshuffle every 5 years

Behind the times

Bad company to work for don't want to spend money. I need to move on no chance to climb up the ladder. Worked for the company for 32 years. Still the same old nonsense.

Pros

Paid sick

Cons

Don't want to spend money

Lower managers are the ones that keep the cogs moving.

Senior management and Executives swan around as if their celebrities. Without the hard working and caring staff who actually want to do a great job and make a difference, including the lower end managers, wouldn't like think what state Southern water would be in.......use to be a great company but gone downhill fast.

Pros

Great staff, who actually have your back unlike the company

Cons

Wages for the work and hours you put in

fair all round environment ideal for those new to the industry

Working environment is fair and well suited to those seeking a slower and more conformative situation. Salaries do not set any records but the terms and conditions are better than you will recieve in most industries. Underperformers are commonplace but left to it. Options for those who adapt and show interest

Pros

fair flexible environments, terms and conditions fair, potential of long term employment

Cons

salary on the lower side of normal, still an element of old school management in places, under performer's fairly common and well established

Moment too greedy

Don't care about their staff. If you are lucky you get a manager who listens and encourages, I was lucky, but others not so. Expect you to work beyond your hours. All geared to Exec and non Exec for their bonuses

Pros

Good canteen

Cons

hot old offices

Undervalued

Great company but going downhill in recent years. They have removed all the staff with knowledge as they know more than the managers. There is little advancement in the company unless you are brown nosing to the right people. The amount of work you complete does not help, you need to be in with the right people

Pros

Staff, cheap cafe

Cons

Not recognised for you worth.

Good People - management challenges

Potentially a good place to work if you focus on the people. Too many 'systems' for any efficient work to happen. A key focus on providing good quality drinking water was underlying but not evident.

Busy & Productive with a fairly relaxed atmosphere

Overall, I'd say it was a good productive & busy environment to work and very technical in learning the information within the industry, for Waste & Fresh Water Services. Working alongside managers & colleagues throughout, whilst developing to become a senior team member, in helping & supporting management with training & supporting new/existing employees. Focusing on delivering excellent customer service & explaining complex matters in a simple form, adding useful information & updating customers, which involved taking ownership & communicating with other deparnents & contractors to get things resolved & for information needed.

Chaotic from top to bottom

I read the JD of a role I know well on this site earlier and it bares no relation to the workload the successful candidate can expect, so I was compelled to write this review as a warning to anyone tempted to apply. The company continuously advertises and interviews for jobs as they want them to be - rather than what they are. The company survives on an expectation that a 9-5 role at any level of the business should include 2-3 hours of unpaid overtime every day - by this method those not able to manage a workload are promoted and those more efficient and effective are deemed lazy. 90% of roles in this company will have the majority of their working hours consumed by attending meetings that don't produce actions, producing reports that don't get analysed, and reading emails that are unnecessary. I witnessed daily bullying, racism, sexism, and attitudes to LBGTQ+ communities that I thought had died in the seventies. Highly paid consultants swarm the workplace, don't pass on any knowledge, multiply their numbers, and leave after 6 months having made no impact on the business other than to demoralise the permanent staff who are left to deal with the fallout and clean up the mess. I spent six years at SW in three roles striving to be part of the solution. In this time the atmosphere in the workplace went from stressful, to hysterical, to toxic. For every improvement made the goalposts were moved 2 steps away. For a while a kind of siege mentality made it a fun place to work but eventually even that was bludgeoned to death by horrific management and constant unstructured -

Lovely place to work

I worked here for 18 years and there are a lot of challenges in this industry however I found the company and employees always try to do the best they can.

Too many external consultants

Too many changes of direction. External consultants lead the business direction. Management spend all their time in meetings. Colleagues are the best part of working here.

No loyalty to SW staff. Job security doesn’t exist

I can’t fault the general staff, but there is an environment where it’s not what you know but who you know. SW have increasingly outsourced a lot of jobs to Capita, both in Yorkshire and India, and left it where there were questions about what they were doing. I feel sorry for those who weren’t made redundant.

It makes you understand why your water bill is so high...

Firstly I'd like to clarify that I did not directly work for Southern Water. The company I worked for was BTU Aka: Bahale & Trent Construction. A joint venture. They were awarded the maintenance contract for Southern Water. I enjoyed the type of work albeit the stench of sewerage but the work ethics of the management were appalling! It was a constant battle to have the correct materials at hand for a full day's work! Ongoing projects would come to a standstill for waiting on materials to be delivered to site. Expected to travel up to 2-3 hours per day unpaid!

Pros

Great bunch of guys to work with, enjoyed the type of work and various locations.

Cons

Poor management of supply & demand, lack of in field support, unpaid travel time.
