Very face paced but nice place to work

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Really easy to get on with everyone, very fast paced but it makes the day go quicker. Could definitely be paid more as it’s more than a minimum wage job.

Pros

Flexible

Cons

Stressful

Great place to work with knowledgeable people

Plenty of opportunities to develop you skills in different ways within specsavers and also gain confidence within any role. Great environment to work with different people ie lab technicians, optical staff on the shop floor and behind the scenes

Favouritism, under paid, stressful

Definitely not a minimum wage job. Pretend to care about staff but they only care about bringing in money. No support when dealing with angry and aggressive customers.

Lots to learn

Managers were great however no proper training. Expected to use Ilearn and learn on the job. Some Colleagues were rude and were not a team player, it’s a very competitive environment and there’s a lot to learn they expect in little time.

Fun for learning but issues with management

A great job if you love learning. Staff are welcoming and friendly. Main managment doesn't like to mix with staff and are hardly seen. This make it difficult to go to them with issues because they never really know you or how you work or seem to want to.

Underpaid fun

This is a job where you learn loads and have a lot of fun. It's very interesting getting to know the business. The minimum wage pay is crazy considering how much the optical assistants need to know to effectively do their jobs though. There are not a lot of benefits and it feels like you are being paid for with well dones rather than money a lot of the time. Its fun but grossly underpaid for the amount of dedication and expertise they expect. Lots of opportunities to progress to even harder roles that barely pay any more...

It’s fine

The hours are fine but for minimum wage it’s not enough. Work is constant and there’s a clear divide between management and everyone else. Colleagues are the best part of the job.

Very busy work place.

Too busy for the amount of staff employed in store. Would finish late most days. Friendly staff and uniform provided for the job. Stressful place to work.

Pros

Ok salary

Cons

Over-worked

Fun, Interesting & Fast-Paced

Lots to learn and it was all very interesting stuff, great management and co-workers, busy environment, the only negatives were that the pay wasn't great and whilst most stores will offer some opportunity to advance, training as a Dispensing Optician takes around 2-3 years (all the while at minimum wage) and training as on Optometrist takes 4-5 years.

Disgusting

Management awful, apart from certain ones. Customers speak to you like garbage, not enough desks for dispensing. Shop floor colleagues were lovely and easy to get on with.

Cons

Everything

Absolutely love it

I have worked for Alton Specsavers for nearly 5 years .I worked my way up from pre tester to now soon to be officially store manager. The opportunities are brilliant and the directors really encourage you to progress .

Great staff, subpar pay

Specsavers pay a little over minimum wage so anyone employed under 21 will receive 20p or so more than the minimum wage for their age group but with the work included and level of learning required to preform the work to a high level the pay seems subpar

Pros

Discounted glasses and contacts

Cons

Low pay

Fast paced busy workplace

Fast paced workplace, no two days the same as one another, variety of roles to learn and work across the business. Courses for advancement available to study and progress in house.

Pros

Bonus scheme

Cons

Long hours with half an hour lunch

Stressful and busy but can be very rewarding too

Always busy, can be a bit stressful at times but also rewarding solving problems for patients. The general working atmosphere can be nice with fun colleagues.

Busy place can be stressful

Good place to work. Busy environment, you are never bored. You always learn something new. Can be stressful when really busy and you have to deal with difficult customers.Overall nice people to work with but 9 hours shifts on minimum wage.

very stressful and not worth it

very fast paced environment, wouldnt work for specsavers again. my store in particular would have very harsh rules where even going to the toilet would be timed and many staff members enjoyed micro-managing the pre-regs

Minimum pay, overworked and no sense of recognition

You feel like you’re a just another employee being used to fill a position. No recognition for your work, no recognition for your skill set or no encouragement for you to reach your potential. Training is just not up to standards and the management team has clear favourites. Had high expectations for this company yet I left feeling very disappointed and disgusted at how little they care about employees

Pleasant work roles, made unpleasant.

Staff would help each other wherever possible due to how busy it was. Most shop floor staff were caring, supportive and professional - I limit myself to extending only opposite regards about management.

Pros

Friendly shop floor, city centre, strong teamwork

Cons

Inflexible shifts, static pay, poor utilization of individuals qualities

Stressful

Management micr manage and expect far too much. I am, and have always been a good hard worker but they had a go at you for asking a colleague for advise as they assumed you weren't working. I left as management almost gave me a breakdown. Doctor signed me off and told me no to go back for the sake of my health
