10/10 placement year experience
Junior Software Engineer (Former Employee) - Southwark, Greater London - 21 April 2023
Spectra Analytics is an amazing AI tech company consisting of a team of incredibly talented PhD graduates. As someone studying Computer Science at University, my experience with their 12-month placement scheme has been better than I could have ever asked. My role involved mostly backend engineering, but they also made room for opportunities to do some frontend development and productionisation of machine learning models. Despite having little experience in software development, Spectra have helped refine my skills and better my understanding of what it means to be a great programmer. Everybody on the team is very friendly and willing to help with any problems you may be facing. They also organise many fun team building events that help create strong relationships with the people you work with. It also offers an opportunity for team members who work remotely to meet people who are normally in office which is nice. I would highly recommend applying to Spectra if you are looking for a role as a software engineer/data scientist.
Pros
Flexible working hours, great working environment

Great Internship - would definitely recommend!
Data Science Intern (Former Employee) - Working from home/ remote - 22 December 2020
Spectra Analytics is an artificial intelligence software company, which also has collaborations with academia. I was really pleased to have the opportunity to undertake a data science internship at Spectra Analytics. From the first day, the work I was given was extremely interesting and predominantly focused on supervised machine learning applied to medicine. I also had the opportunity to work on front end and back end web development. The internship is well structured and there is a friendly, collaborative atmosphere among the team. As an intern, you also receive monthly feedback and have the opportunity to discuss your career path with senior management. My internship was run remotely due to the pandemic and this still works extremely effectively. I would strongly recommend the internship to others!
Pros
Interesting work with a friendly and collaborative atmosphere.

Amazing Data Science Internship
Data Science Intern (Former Employee) - Remote - 15 October 2020
Great experience for any PhD student who wants to know how data science is (or should be!) done in industry. Everyone is very knowledgeable, and willing to help on any problem, no matter how small the issue may be. From the first day I was given responsibility over my own projects, and got a taste of the full spectrum from model development, training, productionization to user interface and design features. As a remote internship due to Covid, everyone made an extra effort to include me in activities, and remote teambuilding games really helped to feel part of the team. The management team were great and always checking to make sure you were ok without making you feel like you were being micromanaged. Additionally, the projects were varied and interesting, and got good exposure to using/developing cutting edge machine learning models that would never have been possible as part of the PhD programme. Everyone is constantly learning, and sharing their skills to the rest of the team, whether that be improved coding practice, new packages/ methods, best security practice or presentations on current projects. Plus the daily stand ups help keep everyone up to date with what each person is working on. Had an amazing time working here and would wholeheartedly recommend! Keep up the good work guys!
Pros
Support, Friendly team, Exciting projects

Fantastic Learning Experience
Data Science Intern (Former Employee) - City of London, Greater London - 23 April 2020
Spectra is a start-up with a focus on developing innovative AI solutions for a range of industries.
I had the opportunity to join Spectra as a Data Science Intern. From the first day I was involved in working alongside the team to develop Spectra's products and I received excellent training throughout the whole process. Spectra care deeply about their interns and the opportunities to learn new skills throughout the internship are endless.
All of the staff, including management, are friendly and approachable. There are also regular team building activities to make you feel part of the team.
If you are a data-minded PhD student looking to develop a career in Data Science I highly recommend Spectra's internship program!

Great colleagues and innovative projects
Software Trainer (Current Employee) - North West UK - 8 January 2020
Spectra is a young, AI focused company, working with customers from across a range of industries. The team are very friendly and work collaboratively which is particularly important for me as I'm based close to our customers and partners who are remote from the London Offices.
As a software trainer I work with healthcare professionals in primary care, training them how to use our software products. Associated with my customer training activities, I relay feedback to our technical development team and help to prioritise product requirements.
The Spectra management team encourage and value input from colleagues across the organisation. They recognize the importance of career development and this is demonstrated by their commitment to a quarterly appraisal programme.
Whenever I meet up with the team at their Central London offices, there are plenty of choices available when it comes to lunchtime food!

A great internship program
Data Science Intern (Former Employee) - London, Greater London - 13 September 2019
A great internship for any PhD student with interest in Data Science wanting to get more industry experience. I got to work on multiple projects, and work on both exploratory research, improving existing products and building the foundations for new ones.
Even as an intern, I was often working independently on projects and had responsibility for the outcomes. That included testing, adding and modifying features based on feedback. But I was always supported by the very knowledgeable team at Spectra, who were always happy to help me with anything I was unsure about and run ideas past them. That made tackling tasks that were completely new to me a lot less daunting.
The best thing about the internship was the focus on me learning things I wanted to learn, and every review I was asked if there was anything I was missing in my goals and my preferences were always accommodated. Spectra really cares about its employees, which very much includes the interns.
The team building events are also really fun, and open to suggestions from anyone. For my last one we went axe throwing!
Pros
Free snacks, Knowledgable team, Regular feedback, Good location, Welcoming

Fantastic Data Science Internship
Data Science Intern (Former Employee) - London, Greater London - 29 June 2019
Spectra is an AI company that focuses on both its work and employees. It was great to work with a team that is professional, produces high-quality products, and values its employees. As all employees of Spectra hold PhDs, the environment combines the best from industry and academia.
As a Data Science Intern, I had the chance to work on a variety of data science projects and feel that I have a much larger skill set now. The quality of work produced at Spectra is high and I worked on projects for clients of the company, as well interacting with them directly. Although I was an intern, I was given as much responsibility as the rest of the team, for example, I presented to a client. The team is very helpful and keen to show you new techniques, which I appreciated, and everyone is very friendly. The atmosphere is calm but productive.
Furthermore, the management is great - they take your suggestions into account, allow flexible working hours, and treat you like party of the Spectra family. There are monthly team building activities, such as escape rooms and bowling, and free snacks to keep you motivated towards the end of the day. An additional bonus is the location in central London, which provides ample opportunity to try out different foods at lunch.
If you are interested in Data Science, I would recommend the internship - it is a friendly and safe environment in which to learn a large variety of data science techniques.
Pros
Team Building Activities, Free Snacks, Flexible Hours, Location, Variety, Friendly

Exciting London-based AI startup
Data Scientist (Current Employee) - London, Greater London - 17 January 2019
Spectra is a dynamic, young and AI-focused company with projects that cover a wide range of techniques and industries. The learning curve can be challenging but help is always provided by other members of the team. For a data scientist, the long-term benefit is that all aspects of data science are addressed and a complete set of skills is acquired. The team is small enough to allow for a nice, collaborative, family-like work environment. Contributions and opinions from employees are always considered.
The company's links with academia and the fact that data scientists all hold a PhD degree is a great plus for anyone who enjoys working in a research-like environment. They also offer an immersive internship program for PhD students who desire a first experience of the field.
Spectra is currently localized in central London (Bank area) which is very well connected and an enjoyable area in terms of food or after-work venues.
Salaries for a data scientist are in line with the market and the management provides a clear career plan alongside annual reviews.
Pros
Exciting data science projects, great team spirit, flexible hours, free snacks, perfect location
Cons
no current company healthcare plan

Official response from Spectra Analytics
28 June 2019The wellbeing of our staff is very important to us so we introduced a healthcare plan earlier this year (January 2019)
A great workplace for professional growth
Data Scientist (Current Employee) - London, Greater London - 17 January 2019
Spectra is a fun and challenging place to work, with management who care as much about the well being and professional development of their employees as they do about providing high quality products to their customers.
As we work on a variety of products across a variety of industries, the tasks we take on throughout the day can vary greatly. As a Data Scientist, the focus of my work obviously involves implementing various models and algorithms using data to address various problems. Due to the often messy nature of real life client data, and the high demands of the clients, this is definitely one of the more challenging aspects. However, due to the size of the company and the desire for the Data Scientists to all be familiar with the entire life cycle of the data (from extraction and loading into a database, to analysis, and finally visualisation via web applications), I often have to undertake various data engineering and front end development tasks. This gives a wide variety to the job that I enjoy, and allows me a degree of varied professional development that I don't think many other companies provide.
Having studied for a PhD previously, I was already reasonably familiar with the data analysis process. However, over my time at Spectra I've learnt a great deal about how to formalise that process into something that can be continuously delivered to a client. I've also got to grasps with backend aspects such as setting up and running web apps, dealing with a variety of database types (both SQL and otherwise), and maintaining web servers, as well as more frontend concerns -
Pros
free snacks, team buidling, diverse tasks, encouraging management, professional development, good hours
Cons
some infractructure and rules still being finalised due to age of company
