A decent place to work but nepotism and favouritism is rife throughout the organisation.

I was well paid during my time with the company it always surprised me at how many people have the same surname. The company had discovered Lean 15 years everyone else and tend to use, it’s a slow moving organisation that doesn’t deal with change very well.

Good training, nice work but some frustration

SSE, was a good company to work for. However there was quite a bit of non productive time due to IT issues in the crack office. I can only be honest and say things went down hill rapidly once OVO took over, it became clear early on that they were not overly interested in the bulk of SSE’s systems.

A clear vision and ethical business

My career in SSE IT has been enjoyable and challenging. The business is expanding rapidly, which means there is often a lot to do and some gaps. It's sometimes difficult to establish ownership of certain services and there is clearly work to do to improve IT in some areas. However the SMT is strong and has a clear vision for technology as an enabler to meeting our wider business goals. The people are friendly, the culture strong and work/life balance, although challenging at times, generally falls in the right direction.

Worst salary ever

This company pays really bad, probably one of the worst in UK, they normally extend your contract every 6 months instead of offering permanent positions. Really bad experience

Disorganised, very corporate but well paid

For this location the salary is excellent. The work itself is not particularly demanding but the environment and culture can be stressful. There is a requirement to document and store all communications, personal movements, hours worked etc for your own future protection. Management are the same at this company as they are at any other; they are interested only in compliance and dislike having their more ill judged ideas challenged. Not all of them of course but culturally speaking, senior managers and directors at this company are encouraged to make decisions but routinely fail to seek out subject matter expert input from their employees (perhaps to demonstrate strong leadership). This is of course, ridiculous and usually results in late, poorly costed and compromised projects. I wouldn’t say avoid this company because there are some diamonds here. You just need to be prepared to get your hands dirty trying to find them.

Great management and flexible working.

I have enjoyed working for SSE for over a year now. The working environment is very relaxed, friendly and flexible. The staff and management are wonderful. They treat you like friends rather than colleagues. Help is always available. Early finish.

Disappointed, moving on.

What was once a good company is now a shambolic mess, many experienced staff are now leaving or looking to leave,staff on final salary pensions are hanging on and counting down till they can afford to go.Progression is almost impossible, your experience and knowledge does not seem to be relevant anymore, being a friend or relation of a manager certainly seems the way forward. You will be promised all sorts, but very little will materialise. Day to day duties consists of sitting around and waiting hours to be issued work,because most of the work is now done by contractors ,when you are issued work it's usually way over staffed, so as staff are not showing as non productive and management appear efficient.

Great place to work

SSE are a great company to work for. the work life balance is managed extremely well by both local and national levels. I have been in the business for 3 years and have had continual support and development from my Manager.The team I work in is small, but hugely competent. Overall, every day is a pleasure

Productive, not managed well, stressful

A company you can never do enough for, targets can be unsustainable, resulting in a poor work/home balance. There are more managers then workers and it is often ‘not what you know but who you know’. A lot of relatives and friends recommended internally for jobs and promotions. The lower end of Managers may be incompetent, resulting in a stressful work environment and they may also encourage clickiness amongst their employees.

Overall this has been a good company to work for in respect of smart metering but since OVO takeover now facing redundancy and not sure if I still have job.

Work from home full time 40+ hours a week

Managers are great. However pay is not as good as living wage in London. Your expected to do alot considering the amount you get paid. Alot of stress not enough money.

Excellent work environment

Customer focused highly motivated to getting it right. Fast and at time non stop but helps day pass quickly. Pay is in line with other companies within this industry and there are some excellent incentives; pension, tech purchase scheme, money saving options

Not a nice atmosphere to work in

Toxic environment where it seemed better from management to tell everyone that they were awful even when the stats proved otherwise. Very clique as well.

Stable company

Good benefits, stable company. Limited opportunity for progression in certain areas as your face has to fit. If your face fits it 's great, if not expect to be treated poorly.

Toxic culture

Toxic culture avoid at all costs. Run and then run away some more. It’s a culture hoover of blame and unreasonable expectations driven by a desire to do more for less.

No stability anymore

At the start this company was brilliant to work for, after they sold the retail side it has really gone downhill.Everything is based on stats and reviews which can become stressful.The overall environment is relaxed management are relaxed and welcoming
