fun place
Call Centre Agent (Former Employee) - Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire - 27 July 2022
Salary is not good but lots of benefits which is nice. Training is the best in the industry and supported to succeed. Management changes and high turn over of staff due to low wages but the people are good.

Top company with plenty of benefits
Call Centre Manager (Former Employee) - Cardiff Gate - 15 May 2022
Great place to be work, but be prepared to work hard. Benefits are great. Just gone through huge changes, not 100% sure if they were right for customers, but certainly correct for the company

A clear vision and ethical business
Product Owner (Current Employee) - Havant, Hampshire - 19 April 2022
My career in SSE IT has been enjoyable and challenging. The business is expanding rapidly, which means there is often a lot to do and some gaps. It's sometimes difficult to establish ownership of certain services and there is clearly work to do to improve IT in some areas. However the SMT is strong and has a clear vision for technology as an enabler to meeting our wider business goals. The people are friendly, the culture strong and work/life balance, although challenging at times, generally falls in the right direction.
Pros
Flexible working, some great office spaces, salary sacrifice car scheme and company share scheme
Cons
Lack of additional benefits at 'lower' levels

Disorganised, very corporate but well paid
Not prepared to say (Current Employee) - Not prepared to say - 18 April 2022
For this location the salary is excellent. The work itself is not particularly demanding but the environment and culture can be stressful. There is a requirement to document and store all communications, personal movements, hours worked etc for your own future protection. Management are the same at this company as they are at any other; they are interested only in compliance and dislike having their more ill judged ideas challenged. Not all of them of course but culturally speaking, senior managers and directors at this company are encouraged to make decisions but routinely fail to seek out subject matter expert input from their employees (perhaps to demonstrate strong leadership). This is of course, ridiculous and usually results in late, poorly costed and compromised projects. I wouldn’t say avoid this company because there are some diamonds here. You just need to be prepared to get your hands dirty trying to find them.

Disappointed, moving on.
Craftsman (Current Employee) - Various - 7 April 2022
What was once a good company is now a shambolic mess, many experienced staff are now leaving or looking to leave, staff on final salary pensions are hanging on and counting down till they can afford to go. Progression is almost impossible, your experience and knowledge does not seem to be relevant anymore, being a friend or relation of a manager certainly seems the way forward. You will be promised all sorts, but very little will materialise. Day to day duties consists of sitting around and waiting hours to be issued work, because most of the work is now done by contractors ,when you are issued work it's usually way over staffed, so as staff are not showing as non productive and management appear efficient.

Productive, not managed well, stressful
Meter Reader (Former Employee) - Reading, Berkshire - 7 February 2022
A company you can never do enough for, targets can be unsustainable, resulting in a poor work/home balance. There are more managers then workers and it is often ‘not what you know but who you know’. A lot of relatives and friends recommended internally for jobs and promotions. The lower end of Managers may be incompetent, resulting in a stressful work environment and they may also encourage clickiness amongst their employees.
Pros
Bike scheme, good rates of pay, benefits
Cons
People in the wrong jobs, bad management and clickiness. Too many relatives and friends employments.

Stable company
Process Engineer (Former Employee) - Gloucester, Gloucestershire - 12 December 2021
Good benefits, stable company. Limited opportunity for progression in certain areas as your face has to fit. If your face fits it 's great, if not expect to be treated poorly.
Pros
Share save
Cons
Double standards

Workplace okay - but Management havent a clue!!
Customer Service Advisor (Former Employee) - Scotland - 15 September 2020
If you want a decent salary but have management telling you one thing and them doing something that makes your working day completed difficult and near impossible then this is the place for you.... Even when you point these problems out, another area gets the blame... and then the circle starts again...
Pros
Salary for the job
Cons
Work/Life balance... Management

Overall a good company to work for.
Metering Representative (Former Employee) - Home Based - 5 September 2020
When I started with SSE in 2012, it was almost like stepping back in time about 20 years.
Some of the systems and ways of working were similar to the way it was in the 1990's.
However this was not a bad thing necessarily as the systems still worked and had been tried and tested. There was a huge emphasis on health and safety which sometimes seemed to overwhelm the simplicity of the job.
Pros
Good salary and benefits, great customer service.
Cons
Sometimes slow to implement new developments.

Variable Management Styles
Finance Analyst (Current Employee) - Glasgow, Glasgow - 12 June 2020
I was fortunate to have a manager who trusted me to do the work and not look over my shoulder. Yes, I earned that as I'm conscientious.
Unfortunately, due to a company wide restructure I'm now facing redundancy.
Depending on the business area, I'd say it's probably a decent place to work and plenty of benefits if you rate those highly.
Pros
Flexible working (location and hours)
Cons
Fewer opportunities atm due to restructure.

Working at SSE is very fast paced and high energy. It is a professional workplace but with a fun aspect. Great salary and benefit scheme for the whole company. SSE really look after their staff.
