I worked for St. Helens Council for 10 years and I have to say my peers were a good bunch, most were hardworking and wanted to advance their career. Only problem was the lack of any realistic career advancement. I found it to be very ‘clicky’ in terms of management advancement and in the years I worked there, no positions of progression became available. Job security was always questioned, as in, we was always looking down the barrel of redundancies and this was used as a control tool in some regard. Management, again, could be effective but there was always an ‘us and them’ attitude which i didn’t particularly like or feel was overly effective.
Good bunch of work colleagues, Pay and benefits was better than private sector equivalent
No career advancement, did not feel valued, constant threat of job cuts, poor management generally
Red Bank was a secure unit for children. This was a very rewarding job and only came to a close when the Local Authority had to close the facility. I worked with some very troubled young people but was impressed with some of the progress that was made and how they addressed their issues.
I started of with the council as an apprentice and the. Got took on as a trainer ( increases wage ) I got all my qualifactons from the man currently still work there job security ain’t the best as they have cut backs all the time but as a place to work it’s really fun
