Bad working conditions, indifferent leadership
Stirling is a beautiful place to work however, as a teacher, I would not recommend it. Behaviour in the school is generally bad and goes from constant low level disruption to children constantly leaving the room and on occasion assaulting staff. One member of staff was recently hospitalised by a pupil. School management does little or nothing to prevent this happening in future and thus the next year has the same problems as the last and staff suffer burn out and low morale. Worse, this collecting of traumatised children into a mainstream learning environment does not help any of the children or staff.

Good In service training
Assistant (Former Employee) - Stirling, Stirlingshire - 16 August 2023
Good training but a lot of temporary contracts. Poor pay for more junior roles but opportunities for paid training. IT a bit slow and needs to be updated.

Ok for short term
Building dept (Former Employee) - Stirling, Stirlingshire - 17 July 2023
Disorganised, dept never had the correct equipment for the job, vans are at the end of their life. Ordering materials is difficult you either get the wrong stuff of you wait half the day for it. No fire extinguishers in vans or first Aid kits. Very much a get on with it vibe. Best bit of job was the surrounding countryside.
Pros
Nice country side
Cons
Disorganised

Insights into Stirling Council
What people like
- Supportive environment
- Clear sense of purpose
- Time and location flexibility
Cronyism rife, management treat you like children
Multi Skilled Tradesman (Former Employee) - Stirling - 19 April 2023
Worked here for over a decade, was a great place to work until the recent management team came in. Reinstated a bunch of redundant management posts and started promoting family members and friends constantly while not affording opportunities to good hard workers. My team was great on our side but liasing with higher ups was beyond infuriating. Spoken to with a condescending tone and a culture that my opinion would constitute work place bullying. If they develop a problem with you, or you voice an opinion that doesn't align with theirs prepare to be monitored, tracked to within 15 seconds of your breaks and finish time, unrealistic targets with consistently being booked through breaks without appropriate travel time in place.
Pros
Short days
Cons
Management team, lack of opportunity, cronyism, nepotism

Good team working. Not much opportunity to progress. Good in service training
Learning Support Assistant (Former Employee) - Stirlingshire - 4 April 2023
Good team to work with but sometimes only knew if contract was to be renewed on last day of term. Good in service training . Can be rewarding place to work but term time only pay and contracts .

Average place to work
Supply Teacher (Former Employee) - Various - 28 January 2023
Average place to work. Some schools better than others. The better the head teacher, the better the school. In general, schools in more deprived areas have more supportive and caring staff than those in more affluent areas.

Poor work life but good benefits
Payroll Assistant (Former Employee) - Stirling - 27 November 2022
My experience at the council was pretty awful. I was never given work consistently and was always waiting for that work to be given. Whenever i was waiting for that work i was bad mouthed about the fact that i "wasnt doing anything" when in fact it was just that wait? Their systems are very slow and out dated and the amount of manual work is absurd for this day in age. Everything is done manually and is stupidly time consuming. I never felt like i was "part of the team" as i was always kept out of the loop and treated differently because i was new. Some of the team were very warm and welcoming but others treated you like rubbish most of the time. Overall, the mental health awareness in the council is non existant which is just unnacceptable. Overall terrible experience.
Pros
Good pay and pension
Cons
Overbearing, no work life balance and no mental health network

Job was straight forward
HGV Class 1 Driver (Former Employee) - Stirling - 23 September 2022
Job was straight forward, unfortunately the council has a playground policy grown men acting like children, if they don’t get to go on the beat they want and work with their pals, immaturity among management is bad , as is religious bigotry, worked here as a driver for almost ten years then took redundancy, some decent guys but not many.
Pros
Get to see nice country side on rural beats
Cons
Dealing with management unless you support a certain football team

Teacher of Geography (Former Employee) - Balfron - 10 August 2022
Enjoyed teaching for Stirling council. Pay is ok but job is getting harder. Good if you like being organised and working mainly on your own. Can be stressful at times.
Pros
Job satisfaction
Cons
Poor pay for effort, skill needed and time spent preparing and giving feedback

Waste services corrupt and worse management I have worked under.
Refuse Collector (Former Employee) - Polmaise , Fallin. - 22 May 2022
Too many relatives in the service who get priority for overtime and holidays and get away with murder. You are classed as a problem if you turn up to work to actually work. Management and personnel have a big drug problem !! Absolutely bewildering how i lasted the time I did. They will fabricate stories to discipline guys who stand up to them . Union just as bad !! If you enjoy working with guys out their faces "crack" on !!
Pros
Shift pattern and hours.
Cons
See above !

decent job ruined by management
Caretaker/Cleaner (Former Employee) - Stirling - 4 May 2022
completely incompetent management, no real training, maybe 2 hours? left alone to figure everything out, materials rarely ordered in due time when asked for, rude supervisors and threats made to your reference for not doing something they haven't provided materials for during notice period. not to mention multiple people were made to share reusable gloves for certain tasks, not exactly personal protective equipment
Pros
living wage
Cons
incompetent management

Caretaker (Current Employee) - Various - 28 January 2020
If you do your job, then a pretty good place to work. Can be a long day - core hours are 8.00am to 10.00pm - but management try to ensure that this is not a regular thing.
Pros
Staff discounts
Cons
Long hours

Student Learning Assistant (Former Employee) - Port of Menteith - 30 December 2019
If you love working with children, becoming an SLA is the job for you! It's relaxed in terms of how much you want to work, you can be flexible with your days to suit yourself. Always had a great experience with the schools and nurseries i attended and all the staff where welcoming.

Management appear to be on a different planet and have little understanding of the front line issue and also do not back up there staff.
Area Building Standards Surveyor (Former Employee) - Stirling - 5 November 2019
Problems with the management style within certain departments and the team leaders do not have the knowledge and understanding of the working environment. Most of the team leaders are more interested in pleasing the senior managers and trying to show that everything is wonderful when there is major problem.
aaissues to be dea

Motivated and Positive workplace
ASN Teacher, ASN Outreach, Inclusion Service (Current Employee) - Raploch Community Council, Stirling - 31 August 2019
I love my job.
I have an excellent boss who supports me to meet learner's needs with good advice, encouraging autonomy and creativity. For this reason, I feel very valued as a member of the service.
I am fortunate to have positive working relationships with all my establishments and the SMT, teachers and SLAs therein. I also really enjoy working with the families of the young people on my case-list, as I keep telling them, 'they are the experts!' and I need to learn from them before I can help!
Lastly, and most importantly, I enjoy working with the children on my case-list.
Seeing a change for the better that I have helped to provide is definitely the highlight of the role. Supporting families who are grieving loss and/or facing difficult challenges is the hardest part (but oh so important!).
