Lovely team but not good for students

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
Closing shifts were exhausting and always overran, you have to stay until all tasks are done. Very little flexibility around my college studies, not really suitable for students especially due to tiring long hours.

Pros

Cheap lunch, kind lovely team, good training and social events

Cons

Long tiring shifts and closing is very difficult and always overruns by at least an hour

Not a great workplace

Terrible management, no one knows how to run the store and it’s like looking after children. Very unhygienic with things such as putting new labels but on old food and not changing gloves after handling money

Pros

Free lunch

Cons

Low pay

Worst job of my life

Don't pay correct. Only 1 staff on at a time & u have to have breaks even if u got so many coustomers u have no time to or they will take the pay of you e en if you worked tbou your break. Don't care for safety at all as they would change the date stickers on the food so it seemed fresh wen it was outta date

No benefits and no proper training

There was not enough staff quite often open and close alone. No benefits in place as there was next to no training. No help from the regional managers nor from the head office for the franchise who had a total of 19 subway stores.

Pros

Friendly staff

Cons

Long hours for little money.

Great place to work

Great place to work. Friendly staff and managers. Great training, easy to learn. Can be a lot of work but the team are always helpful. Good for progression

Awful

Not what they advertise. Leaving 2 people to run a store. No training. Far too little pay for so much work. Have to fight to get wages for what you work. Lots of work hours not paid. Staff rushed off their feet while others look at their phones. Do not work here !

Fun workplace

This is one of my favourite jobs and a part of me wishes I never left! I know it’s a different experience depending which store you work at but at mine the staff were great and we all got along and the management was great too! The job was quite easy all things considered and the cleaning wasn’t too hard. The busiest that we were was lunchtime and sometimes at dinner time. We were usually out 20 mins after close if it was a quiet day and you were all caught up with your jobs. There was of course some downsides like when it got stressful it was really stressful but that’s a given with any job but once it’s done and you’ve sorted yourself it’s quite an easy job. But yeah this is definitely my favourite job and I would work here again in a heartbeat.

Pros

Free sandwich with break

Cons

Sometimes stressful

Worst place ever

Management are horrible and you can’t go higher up because they’re all friends with eachother. The pay is rubbish and you won’t get paid correctly and that’s if you get paid at all. Snarky comments behind everyone’s back and manager favouritism. If you work here you won’t have time for your own life, they expect you to work during any free time you have.

Pros

Not one thing

Cons

Everything

Definitely would not recommend.

I haven't even been working there for a month and I already want to leave. Management hates it when you take time off of work (even if there is a family emergency!!!), the team has no idea where to put you and makes you do orders that you literally cannot complete on your first day. The only thing I really enjoyed was having a free 6-inch sub for my break, but even then it was only 20 minutes and they wont let you go on break until it is dead inside. If you really don't like working under pressure or just being thrown about at work, do not work here - you will hate it.

Pros

Free lunch, 20 minute break.

Cons

Management gets mad when you have time off.

Don't work here even if you life depends on it

You'll work two months before seeing any pay, no guaranteed hours, only guaranteed two days off per month. If you quit or are let go, you'll have to wait until the end of the month to get your final pay. Managers have no empathy for their staff and often leave early while staff have to stay up to an hour after their shift. Next to nothing in terms of benefits. Bare minimum pay rate. Management blames their staff for their own laziness. Lucky if you get a break

Pros

Free food

Cons

Long work weeks, incompetent management

Management is terrible

The manager is in serious need of training. High staff turnover is an effect of their terrible managerial skills. They were rude with little to no respect for their workers and I’m glad I’ve left the job. Do they really think it’s acceptable to shout at and humiliate their workers, in front of customers? Disgusting. I hope this is just a case specific to the Subway I worked at and not the same for all the franchises….

Pros

Literally nothing except when the manager would leave in the afternoon

Cons

only 2 people could work at a time so busy periods were stressful

Overworked and underpaid

Higher management don’t want to know if you’re having a hard time as long as they are turning a profit. Managers are pretty much on minimum wage when you work out your weekly hours. They expect far too much for peanut wages. 1/10 do not recommend. Avoid.

Pros

Zero

Cons

Long hours, low pay, no work/life balance

Stay away

Bad work place , the harder you worker the more hate you get, those who are friends with manager get away with murder and the AM useless and allows this to happen.

Not a great Manager

I worked in Subway for couple of months and telling you it was not worth my time. I liked my colleagues but not a fan of the manger/boss. I an 17 and all of the workers were like around 17-18 years old. The manager was never there and it was all up to us from opening till closing. I felt like the manager was rude sometimes especially when we say we can't work on a certain day. Honestly was not happy working there. He left me to do opening all by myself once where I have never done opening and I was so stressed that day. Personally not suitable for someone who is in education.

Pros

Free food

Cons

Not a flexible hours and not a great manager

Lazy work place

Only reason I mainly disliked the place is I got left with everything at the end of the night! I done jobs that previous members of staff should of done and wasn’t leaving my shift till hours later! A staff member used to slack off, go for breaks constantly, when they should of been working so I ended up doing two shift practically.

Pros

Half price food

Cons

Long hours, in on my own dark nights

Not enough money.

Not enough money and a 0 hour contract, yet management gets annoyed when you cannot work. No discount at all, nothing for yourself or family and friends

Pros

Food

Cons

Low pay, not enough hours, bad management.

Awful

They promise you everything, promise you support and never give you any. They ended my probation without any reasoning. I would not work for them if I was you. They treat you unfairly and put immense pressure on you. Not worth the wage

Pros

The team that work there

Cons

Everything

Relaxed and easy first job.

I have worked at two different Subways, part-time in the 3 years I have worked for Subway; I would say this job was perfect for me, as a student looking to find an easy and flexible part-time job beside my studies. The job itself is very easy once you nail how to make the sandwiches- which is not hard at all with some practice, it’s a perfect first job, fairly stress free and very flexible with working hours. It really depends on what kind of store you are in, usually they get busy at lunch time but then cool down outside of lunch hours, this gives you time to grab some food, catch up on cleaning, or honestly just chill on your phone. Food was free to eat for employees at one of the subways I worked at, the other you had to pay but got a discount- I think this just depends on which store you are in. Depending on the size of your store, shifts are usually just done with one or two other people, which is amazing if you get along with your team. Overall, if you are looking for an easy, part-time first job, or an easy job whilst you study then Subway is great.

Pros

Free Food and Flexible hours

Cons

Minimum wage

Overworked and Underpaid

Job is alright as a basic entry level job. Even as an assistant manger I was paid a minimum wage for my age, despite doing all the jobs a trained manager should do I was doing without training. Never enough praise for when you do well only wanting to pick up on the negative all the time. Teamwork is very poor in these shops. Everyone expects cover but never wants to cover when you need it. Staff can be very cliquish as well and happy to talk about you behind you back and lie to the franchisee to protect their own image. No incentive to work as a team as I covered shifts many times for no appreciation from my franchisee. Many stores are badly run where the franchisees don’t have a clue what they’re doing as they’re never on the store

Pros

Free food

Cons

Long hours and work colleagues
