READING ROOM WARDEN in London

horrible place to work
the british library is a glorified internet café with no hope for promotion. pay rise was once in five years. definitely an us and them culture with a lot of snobbery.

Set in a dystopian world in which there is an over-reliance on poorly maintained (and rather whimsical) machines
The Summary is a description from the movie Brazil. If you want to understand the British Librarys internal way of working, watch the movie.Such a shame as what the organisation does is great with a significant number of people really committed to delivering to the public. but a huge resistance to change across the organisation from the management down. The organisation realises it fails to deliver so hires more management to help point out the failings. The same management increases the beaurocracy which drives further failings.

Unsupportive Bullying Management
Managers who have never managed a highly technical team do not understand systems and making seriously bad decisions without consulting the experts. People leading projects without technical understand of very complex systems. Bad bullying culture and no salary progression.

Great opportunities with dedicated colleagues.
This was a great place to work, just a shame their was no permanent job opportunity there for me. The management were great and the balnce between work, home, and social life was a huge benefit.
Operations Team in Boston Spa

Demotivating, stressful, draining
Reading through previous reviews there are some negative comments and unfortunately from my experience I have to broadly agree. Poor communications. Inadequate people management skills. Reviews, projects, restructures badly handled. Some friendly/supportive colleagues but overall a draining atmosphere.
