I love my job with Cornish Bakery!

Indeed featured review

The most useful review selected by Indeed
I’ve worked with Cornish Bakery for 18 months and love my job. The support I’ve had from my Area Manager has been second to none - he’s always so positive and encouraging. The owner himself tries to visit a few times of the year and always has time to listen to your feedback. You do get the impression that he genuinely wants his teams to be happy and fulfilled in their work. I work in a busy tourist village where the days can be very intense but as long as you have the right work ethic and enjoy dealing with the general public and working as part of a time, then I can’t recommend the job highly enough.Training is very good and support for new team members is in place and there are lots of opportunities for development and promotion if you work hard, show passion and have a positive attitude. The more you put in, the more you get out. Cornish Bakery are passionate about delivering great customer service and top quality coffee and food products - many of which being made in-house.Many of the food items that are bought in are as authentic as they can be ie) pasties made in Cornwall, Pastel De Nata’s made in Portugal.

Pros

50% discount available, good team spirit, strong company values.

Best job I've ever had 100%

I've worked here for 4 years, I started as a part time team member and worked my way up to bakery manager. The opportunities I've had over the years has been fantastic and I can't wait to see what I'll do next within the company.I've done things I never dreamed I could do. I've grown so much since starting and that's down to being allowed to grow and the company giving me chances too. The atmosphere on the bakery floor is infectious and can be a real giggle while you're busy getting jobs done. I would highly recommend this job if you want a long stay career as the sky is the limit if you have the drive and passion and want to be part of something amazing. Best job I've ever had 100%

Pros

50% off Free coffee and cold drinks.

Be prepared for what you sign up for…

At first, the on-site training and team were amazing…it’s only when we opened the doors to the public it all went downhill. I applied for a team member role and got defaulted to kitchen porter, working 8-9 hours a day cleaning cups, cutlery and emptying bins etc. after raising concerns, I was fired and made out to be an non team player. I honestly can not recommend this job after the experience I had.

Pros

Nice Atmosphere

Cons

Not the job you apply for

Deceptive Values and Disappointing Work Experience

Working at the Cornish Bakery was a huge letdown, as the company's supposed "values" turned out to be nothing but a smokescreen for their deceptive practices. From day one, it was clear that the emphasis on these values was a tactic to manipulate both employees and customers. The bakery touted its values of "quality" and "authenticity," yet in reality, corners were consistently cut to save costs. Every night you have to close the shop on your own because you suppose to save money on the budget, cut staff of quiet etcetc Ingredients were often of subpar quality, compromising the very taste and authenticity they claimed to uphold. This was not only disappointing but also felt like a betrayal of the company's own ideals. The management's hypocrisy (the area manager mainly) was on full display as well. They preached about "teamwork" and "open communication," but any attempt to address concerns or provide feedback was met with dismissive attitudes and resistance. It became evident that their values were merely a facade to maintain a positive image, while internally, they had no interest in fostering a healthy work environment. What truly earned the bakery the title of "snakes" was their manipulative approach to interactions with employees. They would frequently promise growth opportunities and recognition for hard work, but these promises remained empty as time went on. Many colleagues found themselves stuck in the same roles without any advancement, despite their dedication and efforts. In conclusion, the Cornish Bakery's values are nothing more than a smokescreen for their deceptive -

Progressive Bakery

Transitioning from a different area of work and living area I have felt nothing but support from the management and staff. I have been impressed with the amount of knowledge and support from higher management and within the team. Work life balance... What can I say?! It is great. Previous places of work; especially in the peak periods, I have been asked to work a crazy amount of hours. Here, you must have your rest days and breaks. You can even ask for them together or split! Managent are quick to respond to anything needed within the workplace or personally. Mental health support at this company is second to none! It truly is a proactive and progressive company to work for with customers and staff at the forefront of their ethics.

Pros

Work life balance

Cons

Nothing

Fantastic and supportive workplace and management

Having worked in retail and hospitality for a considerable amount of time before joining the Cornish Bakery, it was easy to see the difference in culture within the company and the bakeries. Internal support is offered on a regular and consistent basis, room for progression and thechance to experience and learn new skills is abundantly offered. Its truly lovely to see support from managers across the board and the company definitely has a family feel to it across its areas, with colleagues and management commuting and helping out other stores and building connections across the country. It was only after being offered an incredible opportunity that I made the very difficult decision to leave the company and my team at the bakery behind, but only with full support and encouragement from those higher up than myself. Its a fantastic company to work for and a wonderful community to have been a part of

Pros

Training, support, fair pay, fantastic team

Rubbish

No advancement opportunities, as someone with 5+ years experience I would’ve expected to be put up for a promotion but was not even offered one. The pay is fair at face value but when you factor in having to do the job of 4 people because the ‘budget’ doesn’t allow another staff member on shift then the pay isn’t good enough for the amount of stress. Toxic work place with toxic management.

Pros

a small discount

Cons

too many to list

People First Independent Business with Growth Opportunities

Each day is different and surrounded by dynamic can-do people who inspire me everyday! I work part-time to fit around study based in office or can work from home as needed. There has been a lot of change, development and growth in the company during my time here which has provided amazing opportunities and I feel privileged to be a part of this growing business and fantastic culture.

Great place to work

Only downside to working here is the lack of contracts. The people are fantastic and supportive, they tend to promote from within and there are lots of opportunities to further yourself on the 'SHINE' program

Pros

50% discount

Cons

Zero hour contracts

Cornish Bakery. Redefining what a bakery should be

Comprehensive training is given at the start of your time with this company, whether you are a head barista or team member. This is because they expect the very best from their teams. They are a very reasonable company to work for in the hospitality business. I started in a new branch so we all had to learn and break in the new technology but was a fun time. All the team are great to work with too. Hours can vary quite a bit, mostly over what you expect, but pay is reasonable and holiday is standard for the industry. The managers listen to what you have to say and try to deal with any issues that might arise They have a good internal promotion policy plus the chance to relocate to other areas. All in all I would say the Cornish Bakery is a good company to work for.

Pros

Discounted food, free drinks

Cons

Long hours in summer.

Fantastic company with excellent growth opportunities

Having been with this company for 10 years I have had a long-varied path starting out as an assistant manager I have not only progressed upwards though manager role and into Head office roles I have expanded my overall knowledge and skills through the learning and support culture that Cornish Bakery has in place. Over the years I have been received various perks as part of the Cornish Bakery’s Benefit programs from a bottle of champagne for special birthdays through to substantial performance-based bonus’s and have had the pleasure of working all over the UK again owing to the support given. I now support teams and managers at all levels in the business looking for excellence which starts with the best teams in store

Collaborative, engaging and rewarding

I can honestly say I love working for the company otherwise I wouldn’t have stayed for 5 years. It’s innovative, following an amazing growth programme and really focusing on its development of people. It’s still hospitality and there are many challenges but the work life balance compared to many in the hospitality sector is a bonus and not to be dismissed. It’s an exciting time to join as we are developing our people, our culture and our portfolio.

Pros

Feedback is actioned, people first company

Cons

Too many changes in quick succession.

A great place to work

I joined 2 months ago and am so glad I did! The company has a great vision and plans for the future. Everyone knows your name and it feels like a family environment

Pros and cons (mostly cons)

I was paid poorly for doing the job of at least 2 people. They had me washing dishes whilst also baking, as well as being expected to serve at the front at any time. Too many times I was questioned as to why the baking hadn't been done (because I was serving customers). On top of this I felt like I was walking on eggshells with my manager due to the stress of the job. Felt like a revolving door job with many staff coming and going very quickly, I quit after 5 months. Despite all this I learned a lot about customer service and felt much more confident in other jobs due to the high pressure environment I was thrust into

Excellent support and training.

As a new employee, I have felt very supported during my short time here. Excellent training provided on site and a great warm, friendly team already in place. Management always available and good network in place to connect with peers. Great career progressions available.
